“Oasis of calm tranquillity”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2013 for a stay in May 2013

This was my first visit to Morocco; the journey from the airport was frantic and dusty but the road eventually came to its end at a small quite car park. After a short walk, with our bags taking their own precarious journey in a cart with a wobbly wheel, we arrived at the front door to Riad Medina. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the look of the ancient wooden facade, but inside was the most beautifully decorated oasis of calm tranquillity, with intricate hand cut tiles of the deepest blue and green trees heavy with yellow fruit.

We were greeted on our arrival with smiling faces and hot sweet tea, in a completely unhurried way which immediately made us feel welcome and expected. After time had stood still for a while, I explored the many rooms and passages in the Riad Medina. Each turn of the stairs revealing yet another secret door behind which was either a comfy bed with crisp white sheets or a shower room dimly lit by a myriad of dappled pattens, from sunshine streaming through the coloured glass panes.

On the roof terrace the true splendour of our position on the edge of the old market became more apparent. From here I could watch the men firstly delivering, then dipping and drying the animal skins in the tannery, whilst all around the hills gently rose up on all sides, framing this most fascinating city on all sides.

As the days past lazily, I always enjoyed a good night’s sleep in a simple yet comfy bed with immaculately ironed sheets, woken only but the haunting call to prayer each morning! A hot shower was a welcome start to each morning and cold freshly squeezed orange juice with bread and honey, a wonderful start to the day. All prepared and maintained by our hosts who were always there just when we needed them.

My guide to the Medina, a local lady fluent in a mixture of English and French was excellent company and we soon developed a communication style based on my not so fluent French and English! She showed us all the hidden gems inside the walled city and it was fascinating exploring the many street stalls and workshops, regularly avoiding the heavily laden mules which could appear suddenly around some tight corner, filling the whole street with donkey.

With our guide in tow, it was possible for us to get entirely lost in the myriad of twisting turning streets of the old market, safe in the knowledge that somehow she would always bring us back to the welcome site of the huge door to our little sanctuary, hidden on a quite street amongst all the noise and bustle of this remarkable city.

I would unreservedly recommend the Riad Medina not only for its enchanting atmosphere and superb location, but also for the friendly network of reliable staff that ensures your experience is not only original, but relaxing and comfortable.

“Home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013 for a stay in May 2013

As a family with two small children (age 2 and 4) we were in the Suite room for a total of 9 days. Booking with Julie was easy and we got a good deal. She gave us detailed instructions on how to find the Riad and arranged a taxi from the airport. The room (actually two rooms) looked absolutely amazing, renovated completely in style and easily big enough for all of us.

The housekeeper Aylia always made sure that everything is clean, she made simple but excellent breakfasts with daily variations and cooks great tajines as well. The caretaker Youssouf helped us out on numerous occasions by making local phone calls to guides, car rental agencies etc.

The only downside to this Ryad (if we absolutely have to name one) is its location, which is close to the tanneries. Therefore it can get a bit smelly at times, and in general the streets in the Andalous area area are not as clean as in the rest of the Medina. But we only noticed this the first and last 5 mins of our day anyway..

By far more important for us was the way in which everyone made us feel at home. Aylia and Youssouf played with our children and made conversation about Moroccan life - always with a smile. Coming back from the hectic Medina at the end of a long day, that was exactly what we needed.
Thanks to all of them, and until next time - insh'allah.

Thank you for your kind comments, Aylia (our housekeeper) buys oranges fresh from the market and squeezes them by hand, she also arranges the laundry; I will pass your comments on as she will be glad to hear that her efforts are recognised.

“Quiet, nice and in a good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013 for a stay in March 2013

-The staff was so helpful and so friendly, we arrived and in a few minutes we were having a tea and chating with them.
-The Riad is in the Medina but in a very quiet area, very close to a secure parking where a left my motorcycle. From there to the Riad it's a very easy way, and the Riad sent me all the instructios to don't get lost. The attention from the Riad started even before we got there.
- We had a trouble in our trip and we couldn't get to Fez the day it was supposed, there was no problem to move the booking to the next day.
- We traveled around Morocco for 10 days and the Riad Medina had the best bed of our trip. We loved the inside patio, with the trees, the birds...

Thank you for your kind comments about the riad. My husband is so jealous with regard to you motor biking around Morocco, it is one of his dreams but he hasn’t yet managed to organise anything. We know that the unexpected often happens when travelling in Morocco and we try to be as flexible as possible in accommodating last minute changes to plans.
Maybe we will see you next year!

“Thank you”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013 for a stay in March 2013

I spent nearly 2 weeks in Fes and in the Medina Riad. March is a little bit cool but I loved the place, more particulliary the cooking lessons that Alliah accepted very kindly to give me (Kafta, couscous, soup, salads and tagine). The meal are excellent. Do not hesitate to taste it. The discussion with Yousef are also usefull to better understand the way of lifein Marroco. Arrival, transfert from the airport, cleanliness, bedding, facilities are Geat. Confort is good. I recommand the Riad for people who wants to share the life in the Medina. I hope I will come back with my wife and child one day.

I'm glad that you liked the food, all of our meals are prepared by our housekeeper who is a local Moroccan lady who cooks very traditional food using fresh ingrediants; I will make sure that I pass your comments on to her.

“Not for the faint-hearted!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013 for a stay in February 2013

We stayed in the Riad Medina in February which had a number of disadvantages - firstly the rooms are designed to be cool and so it was difficult to keep warm. Secondlly, we were warned that it was not really safe to go out into the Medina after dark and anyway everything closed down. As it gets dark early in February, we felt rather trapped! It was possible to take a petit taxi to the Ville Nouvelle, but you need strong nerves to travel with these kamikaze drivers! Fortunately, we could get a simple but excellent meal in the Riad.
The room (the jacuzzi room) was poorly equipped - only a bed and a chest of drawers - nowhere to sit down or hang anything. There were a couple of coat hooks which fell off when we hung things on them. The jacuzzi was unfortunately not working, but there was plenty of hot water for showers and baths. As we only paid 40 euros a night (off-season price) for the room with breakfast, we felt that in spite of the shortcomings, it was reasonable value for money.

Big thank you for your response, I am sorry that your stay in Fes did not meet your expectation but we appreciate you honest feedback.

The winter season does offer a different perspective; February is "out of season" for tourists in Fes and therefore it is the perfect time to see how the medina operates in a traditional way withut the heat and busstle of the summer months. This time of year is favoured by scholars and historians who use it to get under the skin of the real and very unique medina. I have highlighted the need to Abdul to ensure that guests are made aware of the services of the official medina guides, who are highly educated and very proud of their medina, and also provide the assurance and well-being for our guests.....personally I have never experianced any safety issues and we have not had any reports or incidents with other guests.

February can be a cool month in morocco and i appreciate your view on the way the houses are built, I have asked Usef to ensure that there are sufficient portable heaters to ensure that bedrooms are warm and cosy.
