“Budget hotel in a great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2009

Even though this hotel has its limitations, I would clearly recommend it. While the rooms are nothing fancy, I can not confirm some of the other complaints here. It was a cold winter 2008 and my room had a good heating which is a great asset in Morocco. My room was clean but nothing fancy and worn. The bedsheets have a little hole here and there but were clean. The restaurant is not good, for my second night I chose not to have dinner here. Breakfast also was nothing remarkable, and it´s one of the few places in Morocco that does not serve fresh orange juice but some diluted artificial tasting stuff with orange colour. The best thing however is the location, right at the entrance of the Medina. A lot of expensive Riads have quite a scary walk through small alleys that are hard to find and dimly lit at night, while this hotel is accessable by normal road and a taxi can drive to the door, nothing spooky at night. Perfect! And the price is ok too, I´d say it´s good value and I think it´s the best budget choice in the entire town.

Hotel Batha is conveniently located near the medina (which is difficult to get out of on your own). Food and wine are overpriced...wine is 5 times more expensive than super marche. I traveled with a group of about 20 people. Most rooms were adequate. Mine was worn and had no heat. Beware the marble courtyards inside the hotel in the rainy season as they are very slippery.

The location of the hotel cannot be faulted and if it wasnt so good i wouldnt even consider recomending this hotel to anybody.
I don't want to sound too harsh, the staff where pleasant enough and the hotel courtyard is a nice place to be but what matters more to me is the quality of the room.
My room was at best outdated which would be passable if it was clean and presented well, sadly it isnt. The linen, although washed was so old it could never have the appearance of being clean or fresh. The end of the bath was a state, the shower had to balanced on a bracket on the wall and the head so dirty it nearly had stactites on it!! Heating was a small electric heater 'just' powerful enough and the TV tiny with only 1 english channel.
Breakfast is limited, with a choice of bread, croissants, boiled eggs, weak coffee and diluted orange juice.
Atleast its cheap!!

Coming from Meknes, we reserved by phone (with our precious Lonely Planet guide book) for 3 nights but we stayed only one...

I agree that the courtyard is nice but the room are out dated.
Just by the look, you can be concern by the cleanliness. The bed sheet were coming already with holes and hairs from somebody else.... (but no bugs.)

We did have heat in the room (with an electrical heater) but I question really the safety of that thing which was sparking every few minutes.
However, there was a good news: we did have hot water for the shower.

The room was very noisy. We wake up at 3 AM by a bunch of talking (yielling) of people in the alley below (taxi/bus drivers ? Cars being moved around).

I would recommend that you go somewhere else, even if I must admit the location of this hotel is good. If you can afford it, go to Ryad Louna which is close and I am sure that for the same price, you can find better. (This is not Marrakech!)

Three stars is a stretch for the Batha Hotel. The facilities that are listed on the website are exaggerated. We had no alarm clock, hairdryer, iron / board, mini-bar (or even a refrigerator), or tea / coffee maker. There was a television, but with three working channels and poor reception. The rooms are a bit dated and it’s best not to look too closely if you don’t like dirt.

Breakfast was of decent quality but somewhat limited in selection. The restaurant / bar is nice, and you can sit out on the patio to drink a beer (very few places in Morocco serve alcohol), but we were disappointed when we invited some friends to join us there, and around 10:30p.m., not only did the service end, but the lights were turned off leaving us in pitch darkness. We requested both the waiter and the front desk to allow us a bit more time, but they flatly refused.

With a few exceptions, the staff is indifferent and at times hostile or condescending.

On the positive side, the location is quite good. The hotel is just outside of the medina, therefore convenient for touring, and also easy to get to the train station (by taxi) in a matter of minutes.

Pretty nice place, cool rooms with aircon, and convenient location. And very clean throughout; Close to the Medina; but not inside. I think staying inside would make getting things difficult to find and carry luggage.

Room on first night was noisy as it faced the street, but friendly reception staff moved us to a triple the next day in much quieter part of hotel.

Breakfast is dreadful, but enough has been said about that in other posts, ask them to exclude it from your bill and buy it from one of the street cafes for 15 Dh, better quality to boot.

At 530 dirhams a dbl; their are plenty of cheaper options available, but I think the price here is a bit inflated because it is in the Lonely Planet, maybe.

Loved Fes, wonderful spot.

I think the best this hotel has is its location as it is near one of the main entrances to the medina. Also, it's got a swimming pool, which is pleasant in summer.
On the other hand, we found some bad things that we think don't make this hotel advisable: the first room they gave us (on the ground floor) was really damp: the walls were flaking the paint and it stunk. After telling them, they changed it. This second room was better but the air conditioning didn't work properly.

Also, and this was the worst, the man on reception told us how dangerous it would be to go to the medina on our own and he offered to call an official guide that would show us the medina for 10 or 15 euros. The guide wasn't official at all, he charged 25 euros and he just wanted to take us to his friends' shops, even having told him we didn't want to buy anything.
Considering these facts, I wouldn't go back to Hotel Batha as I don't think it is a reliable place. I would go to one of the hotels in the new part of the city, beacause there are a lot of restaurants and taxis between the old and new parts are very cheap.
