“An amazing hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2014

I warmly recommend this hotel if you want to visit Fès. The service is very Good, the rooms are very well decorated, the pool is perfect and the view of the medina is great. If you want to relax go to their very nice spa.

I have stayed at this property at least 7 times, and each time I kick myself that I have come back--but there is just something incredible about the view over the pool and gardens overlooking the old medina of Fez. The staff was greatly improved since my last visit 5 years ago--and as that has been my previous number one complaint--I have rethought my original rating of the Palais Jamai. BUT, this is still a very rundown property and is really being ignored by the Accor/Sofitel management group--it was ironic that during our stay--there were no French patrons at the French owned hotel. Previous reviewers have stated that the pool area is beautiful--and it is. It is also falling apart with tiles falling off of the pool, huge cracks in the patio area, and gummy and mildewy grout jammed into the extensive cracks in the pool. The grounds are neglected, with pool equipment and hoses tossed here and there. This is just inexcusable for a hotel that should be one of the top hotels in the world.

Our dinners were good, and although it was Ramaddan, we were paying full price for the food--and only one of the fish (the salmon) was ever available on the menu--the rest of the menu seemed more of an idea of what we could have had, had we not booked when we did.

The hotel was also almost empty when we stayed there, and although I am a repeat customer--we were never offered the suites that remained empty and right next to our hotel room.

But, we will return--hoping against hope that someone with deep pockets and a respect for this potential beauty will come save her.

Room Tip: Get a room with a medina view--really the entire reason to stay here.

This hotel was probably once Grand, but its glory days are far behind it! Don't be fooled by the pictures on line, they do not represent it accurately and the devil is in the details. We were upgraded to a suite, probably because we were practically the only customers. It was kind of creepy, sections of the hotel were deserted and dark, fountains no longer worked (a dead bird in one), the pigeons have taken over and defecated on everything, lights broken, tiles falling off the walls etc. Our room was large but musty and extremely old decor (1970's) Toilet seat cracked and smelled of urine so strongly we had to keep the door shut. Needless to say we checked out early. It is a real shame, it is obvious that this was once a very nice hotel, but has been neglected and left in disrepair.. I felt really sad that Sofitel has let it die. On the positive side the 4 staff people we encountered were very nice.

The property is elegant--inside and out, with a lovely garden. Terrific views out over the Fes Medina. The food in the European dining room (the only one we tried) was excellent as was room service. However, the best part of the hotel is the gracious and helpful staff, especially the concierge staff. The chief concierge went above and beyond the call of duty to resolve issues we had with a purchase in the Medina. Thanks to him we have only pleasant memories of our stay in Fes.

Room Tip: Worth the extra cost to have the view out over the Medina.

We had a standard room, which was fine for our purposes, as we didn't spend a lot of time in it. We especially enjoyed breakfast overlooking the beautiful gardens, pool and the Medina. This property has a terrace/bar also overlooking the Medina, which is a great spot to unwind after a long day. But after three nights, the property felt confining. Although we had a guide and driver during the day, we didn't find it easy to scout other restaurants in the evenings. The restaurants at the hotel are good, but the menu at the main restaurant seemed limited. We did have a relaxing Spa experience and booked the Hammam treatment (co-ed). Our room (Medina view) was wifi-challenged. The tech support person came right away to set up a router, which I greatly appreciated.

While certainly needs some renovation specially in the rooms, this hotel is a very good choice for Fes-el-Bali given its great location.

The swimming pool and restaurant are very nice. Check in was excellent and most staff very friendly. The hotel has a good group of guides to show you around (definitively needed if you are going for one day as I did, so as to make more productive your stay). Internet is decent.

The only (stressful) problem I had was that I had an early flight at 6:05 am and I did not get my wake up call. When I got to the lobby staff were sleeping. The hotel does not have taxis outside, and the staff did not have the number of the taxi driver that was supposed to be there (!). The taxi ended up arriving 30 minutes late and I made it.

Not sure if it's something cultural but if you stress about getting on time to your flight avoid the 6 am flight or take the matter into your own hands and get a driver.
