“Very convenient location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2010

This Ibis is located next to the train station, so it was perfect to us, because we wanted to catch the 2.30 a.m. train to Marrakech.
It a simple but well decorated hotel, a few steps from restaurants and small food shops. I think they are under renovation, so we requested one renovated room - it was quite good and much better as I expected: good, clean and modern.
Spacious bathroom, with some toiletries and a good shower.
The staff was nice, despite we had read some reviews that criticized them, but we didn't have problems.
If you want to go to the Medina, it is a 15min taxi ride (for more or less 15dirhams, 1,5€!!), but first book an official guide, or you will have troubles, as the Medina is a huge labyrinth. And prepare yourself to be asked to buy carpets, leather goods, ceramic all the time!!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2010

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights during our honeymoon in Morocco. By that time we were a little tired of riads in the middle of medinas and wanted a bit of the known: a chain hotel when you know exactly what you can expect. We were very pleased with out stay in this hotel and would recommend it based on its convenience.

First, this is a no-frills hotel that belongs to an international chain, not a riad or a luxury hotel, and should be treated as such. Don't expect location in the middle of a medina, rooms with individual or very original decor, a great spa or fitness facilities, and having breakfast together with owners. Instead you get a typical Ibis hotel - clean and well furnished but undifferentiated rooms, separate modern bathroom, and a standard menu in the bar and restaurant. But you get really good value for money here (it seems to be one of the cheaper hotels in the Ibis network).

This Ibis is located right next to the train station which makes it a great location if you arrive late or leave early. Taxi fare to the medina is 5 drh / €0.50, plus it's anyway within a walking distance, so not staying in the medina itself is not an issue in Fez. Hotel guests are the usual mix of leisure and business travellers, neat and decent. Breakfast restaurant has long opening hours and can accommodate early risers and long sleepers alike. There's a big outdoor pool area with deck chairs. There's (free) wireless internet but you need to go to the ground floor lounge to get reception. Rooms are quiet, our was overlooking the garden and pool, and we get good night's sleep.

Overall, this is not a place to get a taste of authentic Moroccan decor or lifestyle but it's a clean chain hotel that offers good value for money.

I had a very pleasant stay and was nicely surprised expecting the worse as per other reviews. Stayed in the room 123 which was clean, bright and good and had everything one would expect from Ibis. I have stayed in Fes in many hotels/riads in the medina and for this Ibis is much better value than some run down places both on the new town and in the medina. Great location for transport - brand new airport bus (DH20) stops almost outside as well as local airport bus (DH3.40). Not to mention new train station which is on the same square. You will need ear plugs anywhere in Morocco, but Ibis was relatively quiet. Very good value for the price - expect nothing and you'll be nicely surprised.

Nothing special, but a perfectly decent place to sleep if arriving late at the train station. We did have a bit of a miscommunication with them though, having phoned ahead to make a reservation at the online winter special rate but finding on arrival late at night that the reservation was at the standard rate -- the reception staff didn't even seem to be aware of the special rate's existence and insisted that the staff we spoke to on the phone were "professionals" and wouldn't have negotiated a lower rate. We felt a bit taken advantage of at 3 AM, but the price difference was small and perhaps it was a reasonable misunderstanding given that the special rate was only available online and required pre-payment, which they didn't ask for on the phone. Don't let them include breakfast in the room rate if you aren't interested in it.

There also seems to be a strange shortage of pens at the reception desk. We borrowed one in the morning while sitting in the lobby and were approached no less than three times in ten minutes to see if we were done with it!

Friendly reception. Good breakfast. Cleaness of the room is not an issue. Stayed only for one night. You'll be effectivelly helped to park in the outside, it works. After reception you'll be formally aproached by a credited guide. It helps a lot to have a guide to enter and see the Medina. Even on the second time we needed a guide and, approaching the Medina entrance, we accepted service of a young girl very educated that showed us the way to a museum we were looking for. When we left the museum she was still standing in front and guided us to the outside. Without insisting, showed us "her cousin's" carpets shop....All of them try to drive us to the shops of "authentic" and "cooperative made" handcrafted goods. Well, it is the opportunity to sit and rest.

I was expecting a bland, soul-less, box of a room, but I was still very disappointed.
We asked to swap rooms a few times on check-in (to get a pool-facing room etc), and eventually found one.
The bedroom was really dirty, and seemed to get worse the more I looked. It had a carpet, which was an odd choice in a country where I never saw a vacuum cleaner (which may explain the filthy state of it). Lots of stains, scruffy scuffed and broken fittings.

The reason we booked here was because we were on a long trip around Morocco and needed to book up somewhere quick online for a few nights. We thought we'd get bland, but clean. But we didn't even get clean.

We checked out the next morning, cancelling our next 2 nights at the hotel.

The staff were pretty unhelpful, and didn't seem to care less.

Though convenient for the train station, its not really near anything else.

We had stayed at the beautiful Dar Seffarine in the medina the night before (so had been somewhat spoiled) but at only around £10 more per night than the Ibis, and that included breakfast (which the Ibis didn't) a million-times better value.

Avoid.
