“Perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012

My friends and I stayed in this charming little Riad for a night.
The rooms are very clean and pretty with beautiful Moroccan decoration on the walls. It's the perfect example of Moroccan culture with its architecture and structure, especially in the central terrace, where you can drink your mint tea while conversing with the owners about the city.
The owners are adorable and very helpful! My friends and I were supposed to leave very early in the morning before breakfast was officially served, but they offered us food and drinks to take along with us in the train.
The location is very good as it's near the entrance of the Medina, so you are close to everything you could want to see, be it restaurants, markets or hammam!
Moreover, if you go on the terrace at the top of the building you have a beautiful view of the Medina of Fes and the hills around. You can choose to have a drink there or just sit and enjoy the tranquility of the place.

I highly recommend it!

dar kenza is really beauitful, clean and quiet and makes for a nice stay.
the owners are very nice, friendly, and helpful. they showed me around and explained their recent renovation process, which made the stay a little more personal and fun.

but i wouldn't recommend this for someone younger or a solo traveler who is looking for ppl to connect with. it's perfect for a family or a more mature couple. it's a little pricier than some of the other places.

The service:
I forgot something at this riad, and the owner, Najib, packed it up nicely and sent it to me overnight when I contacted him - talk about helpful service! I like to consider myself to be an independent and trouble-free traveler, but it's nice to know that your host will genuinely try to help if something unforeseen happens when you're travelling abroad. More than that, Najib, is a very sociable guy who actively seeks to make his guests feel welcomed. He was the only host during my time in Morocco to set out a huge plate of fruit as part of the welcome, in addition to really good cookies (the best of all the places I stayed).

The room:
Nice large space with a comfortable divan and armchair for relaxing. The room faced into the common area, which means that it can be noisy in the morning at breakfast time (if you like to sleep in, like me). It also means that you can hear the TVs from the other rooms. Oh, and the bed in my room was a bit squeaky, so turn up the TV if you plan on making the bed squeak ;) There was a slight mildew smell after showering, but Najib takes these reviews very seriously, so I'm sure he'll take care of it soon. For the price, it would be hard to beat this riad.

The riad:
Very charming common area. The rooftop terrace was also nice, although the hanging laundry detracts somewhat from the overall appeal. The location is a bit of a walk to the main market area, but it's good if you like to wander and catch glimpses into the daily lives of the locals.

Dar Kenza is comfortable, beautiful and altogether charming. It is run by a husband and wife team who are extremely knowledgeable about Fez in particualr and Morrocco more generally. They provide a friendly but unobtrusive welcome or a great conversation depending on your needs. Dar Kenza ia a wonderful place to relax and a safe haven in the midst of the hustle and bustle of this ancient Morrocan city.

After being given an amazing cultural and historical tour of Fes by Najib (the only shop we visited was the one I asked to go to), I decided to visit his Riad. When I arrived, I was greeted warmly and immediately invited to take tea with Najib on the rooftop terrace (the views from which are some of the best in Fes and definitely the best of the medina. After tea, Najib gave me a tour of the riad, and I found the rooms to be both well appointed and cosy.
If I'm ever lucky enough to return to Fes, then this where I'll stay.
Unfortunately I'm unable to share the great photos I took of the riad and its views, as my camera was purloined whilst I travelled from Fes to Marrakech.

Great Riad 5 minutes from the main gate with the best hospitallity that we had in Morrocco (or anywhere for that matter). We liked Rashida, the owners wife, so much we wanted to kidnap her.

Good points:
- Najib the owner has worked within tourism for 30 years and is very knowledgable about the area and has great contacts. He speaks fluent English, French, Arabic and German and is a likable and funny guy.
- Rashida the owners wife is lovely. She spent an afternoon teaching our 2 wifes traditional cooking (including cheats with pressure cooker) which we ate and was one of our best meals in Morrocco.
- Great location inside the Medina 5 minutes from the main gate.
- The Riad has been restored to a very high standard with a nice roof terrace.
- The Riad is spotless, it has free WiFi and there is also a washing machine available.

Bad points:
None - this is one of the best places we have ever stayed at.
