“Positioned well and reasonable standard”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

Stayed at this hotel for 6 nights at beginning of March. Was a reluctant choice as no trip adviser reviews, but listed in both Rough and Lonely Planet guides and so decided to chance. There were other popular 3* hotels at about the same price which I considered also, but since hotel listed as 4* and double room included for single price decided to go for it. Previously this hotel was known as Menzeh Zalagh 2, and so upon arrival taxi driver gave me tour of city trying to find it, despite being only short distance from train station.
This hotel caters mainly for one night stay tour buses which turned up almost every evening. Not such a bad thing though, as gives more vibrancy to what would otherwise be quiet hotel, and also guarantees that both dinner and breakfast will be top notch from buffet. Only the first night were there no coaches, which meant dinner was served individually to few guests staying. Still good but limited choice and unable to be greedy.
Hotel itself is very well positioned and the main places of interest can be easily accessed on foot. Had a double room which was adequate in size, clean and comfortable. Had both bath and shower and always plenty of hot water. Soap, toilet tissue and towels were all good.
Although hotel was relatively clean it did suffer on a few maintenance problems like many other Moroccan hotels, and lift at front remained out of action after my first day. My bed had a sagging mattress despite my sleeping ok. Heating was effective and there was no noise at night. Service was consistently quite good in the restaurant, but I was not impressed with service on the reception at any time. There were no quick responses, and care of the room keys was poor. Always a problem as to where my key was located each evening and usually left anywhere. Also, I travelled overnight to Fez by bus and so arrived at hotel soon after 7.00 am . Had asked prior if could leave my case until check-in time, but was hoping by staying 6 nights that I would be allowed to enter room early, as needed shave and wash, but no as told would have to wait until midday. Other hotel receptions were more obliging.
The Menzeh Fez is located on a low ridge overlooking the medina and clearly if you had a room at front of building on higher floor, you would previously had enviable views. However, not anymore as there is another development being erected across on other side of road which obscures all. Guests in hotel can use the adjoining gardens of its sister hotel, along with pool and other facilities. There is also a terrace on top floor with a bar area, but during my stay this saw little use. Drinks prices were on high side even for 4* rating.
So in summary what did I think? Certainly with the price I paid on a non refundable early season rate, the deal could not be bettered, despite being asked for further 120 dirhams extra in taxes on leaving. I was well satisfied, but probably the Menzeh Fes would not be my first choice next time as the normal tariff rates for this hotel are almost 5x more , so price is a key issue. The hotel was of a 4* standard, but not luxary and had some minor issues. I have therefore suggested it as very good, but not on basis of normal tariff rates being charged, as would then expect far better for my money.
Fez is a city of much hustle and bustle, but it can be mostly seen in two days or everything in 3 days at a relaxed pace. One can spend days walking medina and souks , but I think for majority two hours will be exhausting enough. I stayed 6 nights as mid way on 5 week trip and needed to catch up on my washing. Also, I wanted to access the Ifrane National Park which is about 1hr 20 mins plus to south of Fez.. Shared taxis are 20 minutes walk away from the hotel; to Ifrane -25 dirhams, and Azrou - 30 dirhams . Shared taxis to Sefrou are just down from hotel and cost 10 dirhams. All are worthwhile trips if able to find the time.
