“Great breakfast, great location, kind staff.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013 via mobile

It is a family home down a narrow winding street in one of the oldests parts of the Medina so a bit hard to find. The man who appears to run it with his wife provides a map and good directions on arrival. Very friendly. Feels like a family home. Great "continental" breakfast. Great value!

Once you find it, ducking through a cool, quiet little alleyway, Fez Aya is a wonderful place to stay in the Fez Medina. Faoud and Fadwa, the owners, go out of their way to be kind and helpful. Their housekeeper maintains the rooms in perfect cleanliness.

Two small issues: My room on the upper floor shared a back wall with the recycling souk next door and I could sometimes hear voices, music or noise through the wall, sometimes into the night. I would choose a room away from the wall. The air conditioning was weak.

I'd stay there again!!

Room Tip: avoid back wall adjoining souk behind road; voices and music and work noises leak through crystal-cl...

I stayed here in June 2012 and still remember the great experience. The rooms were great, the food better and the atmosphere felt extremely authentically Moroccan. The rooftop lounge area was an added bonus with a killer view of the old city. Despite all these positive aspects, the hosts were the best part as they were always eager to give advice on, arrange and personally lead you on great adventures throughout their city. The hosts were an invaluable travelling asset and if you want to make the most out of your trip for the least, ask them what you should do, not the guidebooks.

For 300dh per night in the centre of Fez medina, we were very happy with our stay here. We stayed for 3 nights, and found to be a great location away from main Talaa in a quiet alleyway but not too far away to get to everywhere you want in the medina.

Finding the place is a bit of a struggle, and we had difficulty in contacting Fouad to let him know we had arrived. But once we made it there, we were warmly welcomed by Fouad and his family. The house is beautifully decorated in the main courtyard and has a charm about it all.

Our room was up on the top floor and smelt of cedar wood with the wooden roof. The bathroom was reasonably clean, a bit musty with no windows. We were led to believe we had a blocked shower drain, although it turned out to be a strange plug system, be wary of this one before water flows out the bathroom!

We had a traditional meal on the final night of our stay at the house and it was delicious. One of the best of our stay in Morocco.

A lovely family home if you're wanting to stay in the centre of Fez in traditional settings. Recommended.

Word of warning - Fouad arranged for us to have an official English-speaking guide around the city. We're not sure how "official" our guide Ali was, as he wasn't that informative of the city or it's history and he led us off to numerous shops and a restaurant that we didn't want to eat at. After telling him we weren't happy eating there, he got quite argumentative. Probably best to avoid Ali if he's offered to you.

Room Tip: We were located on the top floor, and you could notice the temperature increasing as you climb the s...

We booked this maison after reading some of these excellent reviews but the reality does not match up.

Positive points:
- the bed was firm but we found it comfortable
- there was abundance of hot water
- the host lady was pleasant enough and smiled each time she opened the door for us

Negative points:
- the riad in itself was damp and musty and the room (although quite large) was cold despite having the heater on most of the time
- the shower room flooded and took a long time to clear
- the male host turned up only to take the payment (we would not say his English was as fluent as described in some of these 'suspicious' reviews)
- breakfast was basic

You can find much better places to stay in Medina for slightly extra cost.

We came in from the Sahara and our driver called the owner to come out to the closest entrance to greet us. I think that you have next to no chance of finding this place without someone coming out and walking you to the door - it involves some walking in narrow passages and stooping over.

It is run by a lovely family and the owner offers helpful and genuine advice. It is in a quiet bit of the medina so I would not recommend this if you are travelling alone because coming back here at night time, the streets surrounding are dimly lit and very quiet.

It was a lovely stay we enjoyed here - we were given a room at the top - it was very spacious and comfortable for the two of us.

As we drove into Fez, it was raining and we had a very limited map. I had previous done a search for Fez hotels, looking for the least expensive option. We drove around looking for the hotel, but found ourselves completely lost and feeling hopeless. I called the owner of the hotel and he told us to wait where we were and he would come to us. Within minutes he was there and leading us in his car back to the hotel. Once we saw the hotel and the room, we literally jumped up and down with joy, feeling so lucky. It's a very charming hotel, wonderfully quiet, in a tiny nook in the middle of the winding streets of the main market. We were very grateful to our host and his hospitality, kindness, and helpfulness finding things to do around fez. My only advice, definitely don't try to find the hotel on your own-- call the owner first! (who speaks great english, by the way)
