“Intimate and personal with a charming host”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

Who'd have thought there was such nice hotel up there we thought after we had dodged up 2 or three narrow lanes each no more than 2 feet wide off the main drag at the top end of the old medina in Fes. Inside though it is a heavenly sanctuary, all cool tiles, fountains, pools and citrus trees. The seven rooms with balconies overlook the courtyard and are a great place to listen to the call to prayer at subset ad watch the swallows circling, We were there at Eid and heard the most amazing Sufi singing from the nearest mosque. Michel the patron, was the most charming and helpful of hosts, unflappable and nothing too much trouble. He has a small staff who are all helpful too, but their English is not so great so French is pretty helpful, and so times finding them did not seem so straightforward. Rooms were lovely, spacious and well appointed albeit mission sone practical touches like some where to put your case and a few hooks to hang things on. But all in all, very lovely and memorable.

A high wall stretches along a narrow ally with no clue as to the delights within. Step through the single door and you are in a different world. A fountain plays in the central, tree filled courtyard, a small pool beckons at the end of a day sightseeing in the medina. This small courtyard hotel, or ryad opened just 2 1/2 years ago having been exquisitely rebuilt from the ground floor up by Michel, its charming French owner, using materials brought to the site by the only transport possible - two donkeys. Michel is also responsible for the delicious meals served in the courtyard on balmy evenings. Give him 24 hour notice and he will prepare a superb quail b'stilla, but there is so much else to choose that we are never tempted to eat anywhere else. Michel will also help you choose a suitable wine from his list of Moroccan, French and other international wines. The seven guest rooms are individually decorated and equipped with everything to make your stay comfortable. We even had a beautifully painted antique door opening off the upper floor foyer onto our private balcony. It was very difficult to leave this lovely place.

Excellent service from the very beginning, even before we met. A beautiful guest house in the heart of the Medina, yet it was quiet and peaceful. This is a reformed property which has been decorated and furnished exquisitely by a very experienced professional. His name is Michel and his attention at all times was faultless. We were possibly given the best room in the house and if not my partner and I found it faultless. We did use the pool and it was lovely and cool which was perfect after spending the early afternoon shopping in the heat. It was fantastic to be able to have a cold beer by the pool and in the evening we never bothered to eat anywhere else. Michel himself even prepared a meal for us which we personally asked for. The fried meat with egg and chips was well taken care off and went down extremely well with a bottle of wine from his extensive list of wines. A memorable stay and will recommend it to anyone of any age.

Room Tip: First room to the left as you enter the courtyard.

I am lounging by the plunge pool at Ryad Salama after a chaotic but wonderful morning shopping in the Fes medina. This Ryad is an oasis inside the Medina with a delightful garden, ukbreathtaking -architecture and attentive friendly service. As it is only 7 rooms and the other guest are still out we have the place to our selves. This is a place I would recommend easily to the discerning traveller looking for comfort and beauty amidst the excitement of a Moroccan Medina.

Room Tip: We had a twin room on the ground floor with private breakfast area....... Lovely

We had a great 3 days at this Ryad in Fes. Michel was a great host and excellent Chef.

This was an Oasis in the heart of the Medina and no one could ask for more. Michel went out of his way to be helpful and was attentive all the time. Nothing was too much trouble.

The rooms were beautiful, the grounds immaculate and the food....excellent.

If you're headed to (old city) Fes, you certainly must know what you're getting yourself into... and Ryad Salama is an excellent home base to launch your exploration from. This was our first time in Morocco and Fes was overwhelming -- the mazes, narrow alleys, souks, markets, donkeys, mosques, and everything else was massive sensory overload! But I will say that Ryad Salama was a great escape for relaxation after getting back from an extended time wandering the labyrinths of the old town.

The owner, Michel, runs a tight ship and seemed to take excellent care of his guests, giving us all sorts of tips, maps, and other help. Inquiries via email were answered within 24 hours while he was very flexible when we missed our train from Tangier and had to rearrange a train station pick up later in the day. The 1.5L bottle of drinking water awaiting us in the room was a nice touch and much appreciated.

We stayed in the Capucine room and it was spacious with nice furniture, an in-room safe, excellent water pressure (hot too), with a separate WC for the toilet. The HD cable TV was phenomenal (pick a language!) and it was hard not to get tempted to be sucked in watching TV while there. The towels (and robes) were luxurious and the breakfasts each morning were fantastic. The only complaint was the sad little A/C unit that couldn't keep up with the ferocious July heat of Fes.

Otherwise it was an astounding experience and the Ryad Salama earned a hearty recommendation.

Our first riad on our multi-city trip was overall a pleasure. The owner was friendly and welcoming and the courtyard created in the traditional style we had read about, with orange trees, etc.

The rooms are quite large with walk in closet, separate toilet and bath area.

On the negative side, wi fi was non existent in the rooms, there were some insect coming into the rooms since so open, the rest of the staff did not really speak English, and one day when we came back to our room in afternoon, we had to wait in te courtyard while they cleaned it.

Overall the location was convenient and you get a feel for morocco but with the western comforts.
