This is one of the main entry points to Fes Medina and almost an attraction in its own right, as a meeting place with plenty of options for eating and other amenities. There is an ATM just outside, with plenty of people around, so it feels secure. The street just outside is a good place to find Petit Taxis, so if one will not use a meter, there will be another option just behind, and many more in the next square down a small street to the left. The purple coloured IMWI telecommunications outlet just inside were very helpful getting us reasonably priced SIM cards and internet connection for our mobile phones.
Inside the Gate are many tourist oriented restaurants. The Kasbah has a good upstairs area for people watching. Thami's and Chez Rachid, just around the corner to the right, are good options.
From the gate you can access either of the two main streets that run down into the Medina. The one to the left, Talaa Kbira, is perhaps not for the fainthearted in its first stretch of butchers shops. But there is a very funky hole in the wall late night Berber Cafe where you can hear local kids playing Gnawa music and singing just for fun, rather than 'entertaining'. In one of the first lanes that joins Talaa Kbira with Talaa Shgira, you can also find the Desert Scorpion, another cafe that locals go to play music and hang out. Good internet there and a 'berber tent' space to hang out.
