“Great for those on a budget!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

We stayed five nights at Dar Sienna and had it exclusively to ourselves, which was lovely. The staff in Morocco were lovely. Ahmed went out of his way to ensure we were all happy and Sabah was very attentive. Unfortunately our first night saw rain and we awoke to a very wet living area, which stayed that way for the next two days. The decor is very shabby chic but lacked the comforts we had come to expect from other riads. The third floor smelt of mould and the toilet and shower were ridiculously small. The location is great being right in the heart of the medina. Dar Sienna is in need of some attention.

We are delighted to hear you found renting Dar Sienna to be great value, thought the location was great and that the staff were very helpful.
I must point out the difference between a Dar and a Riad: Dar means "house" and a Riad is a house with a central garden, and therefore large. Dar Sienna is a cosy, little family house in the medina, and is not advertised as a riad, which is a much grander structure and will have many rooms.
Indeed it rained a lot during your stay. I am sorry we were unable to reseal the courtyard cover whilst it was still raining.
We have had to make very creative use of limited space during our restoration of this 300 year old house, which previously had no running water and no electricity, let alone any bathrooms at all. Dar Sienna has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, 2 of which are very small and one which is huge.
As shown in other reviews, the vast majority of our guests love the understated chic and homely charm of our restoration, which has even been likened to a boutique hotel. The facilities at your disposa,l which you found so lacking, include: fabulous fully equipped designer kitchen, washing machine, high-speed wifi, three terraces, with a 360 degree view over the ancient medina, funky furniture and gorgeous carpets made by local craftsmen. I am saddened that you were unable to appreciate this traditional Moroccan home.

This place is incredibly located! Right in the middle of the Medina. It's easy to get to several of the entrance gates and to other places located around the city. The house attendant was fantastic, very knowledgeable and was willing to give us all the information, directions, anything we needed :). Sabah the cleaner was great also, helped us do some laundry made, a wonderful breakfast every morning and was very friendly.

Because of the time of year it was quite chilly. I think most of the houses are used to having the normal summer temps and so they are better equipped to cool the place than heat it up. That being said we were provided with heaters for the bedrooms which was nice but the remaining portion of the house was quite cold.

Dar Sienna is located deep inside the Medina, its sights and sounds will surround you as soon as you emerge from the alleyway next to the mausoleum where pilgrims come all day to pay homage. up on the roof, you have a 360-degree view of the Medina, a city inside the city, with all the various minarets rising up above the roofs. The call to prayer rings out from every direction in panoramic stereo... The staff at Dar Sienna are very attentive, you'll be picked up at the station or the gate and walked into the Medina on your arrival, after which it's quite easy to find. Comfortable beds, delicious breakfast, fast wi-fi, everything was perfect! We loved our stay at Dar Sienna and hope to return soon.

This was my seventh trip to Maroc - my first was 1967- and never before did I have the feeling to get closer to this country and its culture, did I feel less than just the superficial tourist than during our week at Dar Sienna. Compared to most places in Morocco the old Medina resisted globalization and change and still is the magic place it was for centuries. To become part of it, kgetting immersed it needed a place which reflected the atmosphere of the medina in our home- and this place was Dar Sienna - an historic Dar, a towering town house with many levels, connected by the steep, tiled stairs, rooms with beautiful mosaik floors, intricate plaster decorations, antique furniture, bathrooms and a kitchen perfectly matching the original style but nevertheless with all the amenities like hot showers, aircon, electric radiators making life comfortable after a day out in the souks. Even more than the house it was the care and friendlyness of Ahmed and Sabah which made us feel home in Fez. Every morning Sabahjj served us her rich Moroccan breakfast on one of the roof terraces with the breathtaking view over the Medina, and after breakfast Ahmed had his advice what to do, where to go. We never needed a guide, saw palaces or riads guided tours do not see. Dar Sienna is situated in the very heart of the Medina, next to the sanctuary and mosque of Moulay Idriss II, which gives the orientation to find your way home in the maze of narrow streets. Ahmed knows everything about the historjy and culture of Fez and being asked about it is a pleasure to listen to him.
Everything was organized perfectly, the taxi awaiting us at the airport, Ahmed at the gate to the Medina to welcome us and lead us to the house. The email contacts with owner Sonhild were
friendly, informative and immediate.
Just one characteristic experience with Ahmed and Sabah: Coming home one afternoon we found small candles lighting every third step of the staircases and kitchen and hall: Expecting a power cut one of them had come in not to let us enter in darkness. There was no power cut in the end but such was the caring.
This was a rare and precious experience and we are waiting for the chance to go to Dar Sienna again.

Room Tip: Every room has its special charme - we took the top floor because it was closest to the roof terrace...

I had booked a room pretty far in advance at this riad in the heart of the Fez Medina. The owner Sonhild was very helpful in planning, logistics, and suggestions for the entire trip. I was met at the train station and escorted to the riad. Good thing as it is buried deep withing the Medina area. But what a location! My room was spacious and had access to the roof terrace (where the ample breakfast was served) and to the elevated terrance above. The views in all directions were wonderful day and night of the town and surrounding hillsides. It was truly a wonderful haven to relax and recoup before diving into the wonderful medina and other areas of this historic city. I was fortunate enough to be there for Eid al Adha. A sobering but fastinating experience. Raid and Fez highly recommended.

This year we decided to spend our holidays in Morocco. First stop: Dar Sienna, Fes. The best choice we could have made. When we arrived at the airport there was a taxi driver with a big sign saying “Dar Sienna”, the taxi took us directly to the Medina, where Ahmed, the manager of the hostel, waited for us to guide us through the maze of the medina. As we finally arrived at Dar Sienna, it was like visiting friends, the house is just amazing; every single room is special with its own charm and style. Every morning we had a delicious breakfast on the roof terrace with an incredible 360° view. Sonhild, Ahmed and Saba are so kind and willing to tell you everything you want to know about Fes and Morocco. At first we planned to spend only two nights, but Dar Sienna is like a little oasis in the bustling streets of the medina, so we decided to spend two more and come back for another night at the end of our journey.

Thank you so much Sonhild, Ahmed and Saba for the wonderful days we spend together in Fes, for the lovely breakfast, all the tea and coffee, for the cooking, for the inspiring discussions and the laughing. Hope to see you all soon!

Staying at Dar Sienna simply "made" my trip!

The price was so reasonable that I was completely unprepared for the conscientious service and great atmosphere awaiting me!

The Dar itself is a work of art. Right in the heart of the medina, literally rubbing shoulders with the old mosque, it delighted me with all sorts of architectural details (old wrought iron windows, mosaic tiles, plaster walls).
Above all, I relished the rooftop terrace. There, i was served breakfast and, later, took in sunset, watching the bowl-shaped medina turn a peachy hue.

I had a large comfy bed, my private (impeccably clean) bath, and a big window to let in lots of fresh air and light!

But as nice as the actual facility was, the service was even better. Ahmed made me feel quite at home - he escorted me from the train to the medina so that I wouldn't get lost, and he gave me such a comprehensive orientation to the medina that i never even needed a guide!

I would have loved to stay for a week more. Sadly, I only got 3 days. Can't wait to go back! In Fez, this is my new "home".

Room Tip: Dar Sienna is nice and intimate, with only 3 rooms -- mine was on the 2nd floor across the balcony f...
