We have been travelling for the last month and have been relying heavily on the reviews on tripadvisor to book as we go so as you can imagine when we saw superb reviews we jumped at Riad Verus. However on arrival we noticed that there we very clear incentives marked as part of the "house rules" that advocated guests to write reviews and receive free meals. This was obviously very disappointing to us as we rely and trust the impartiality of such comments. The place itself is lovely but this issue really did take away from the whole experience.

We are pleased you had a great time at the Riad, we ask all our guests to try and submit a review on leaving, through marketing emails but by no means are we asking for goodies. Please i would like to make a point that it is not a house rule by anymeans, we have house rules such as no smoking in rooms and no bringing in guests from the outside but no where does it mention you must write a review. Sorry you felt this way.

We found it easy to find the hostel upon our arrival in Fes from the train station by getting a red taxi to Batha. The directions video they have put on their website and YouTube are comprehensive and you can't go wrong, far easier to find than I expected.

The hostel is best described as a traditional Riad with a hostel approach and atmosphere, which gives guests the best of both worlds.

We had booked a twin room with ensuite and were surprised with the quality of the room which was spacious and well decorated with a satellite television (which we didn't use) and air conditioning (which we definitely did use). The ensuite bathroom was a sort of wet room, but was not really big enough to be a wet room, as it meant that everything got splashed with water. Shower was fixed head, not amazing but adequate. Towels were provided and beds were very clean.

At night time, the hostel was quiet and got a good nights sleep throughout out 3 night stay. Breakfasts here were good also, consisting of mint tea or coffee, orange juice, a fried egg and lots of bread with jams, chocolate spread and honey. You can get main meals at the Riad also, provided one of the maids is still working. Beer is also available.

Leanora, originally from the UK seems to be the owner & manager and was always on hand to give help and advice over anything and everything and was a true credit to the Riad. Also arranged a 5am taxi to the airport for us which was handy, not sure how we would have done this without her help. Lenora checked us in once we had arrived and had a mint tea. The check in process was smooth and you don't have to pay in cash, you can use a card with their chip and pin machine (5% fee I think) or do a bank transfer or paypal payment (no charge for these two). You have to do a pre-authorisation also for your stay, which is not done using the chip and pin machine, they just ask you to write down your card details on a form. Unusual, but I guess this saves transaction charges for them. I had no problem in doing this though, as all staff and in particular Leanora were very trustworthy.

The views from the roof terrace were good and allow you to see all over the medina and beyond.

Like other reviewers, I went on the walking tour of the medina organised by the hostel. Mohammed definitely showed us parts of the medina that most tourists would never get to see by taking us deep into the heart of the walled city. It was a bit of a sales push though, visiting a carpet shop and a tannery although I didn't buy anything from the places we visited apart from lunch when we stopped at a restaurant. In the end, we paid 75Dh each for the tour (there were 4 of us taking the tour), plus a meal and anything else you buy which was good value considering we were gone at least 4 hours.

There were other activities advertised that the hostel runs, such as Moroccan cooking classes, terrace drumming sessions and daily hammam visits which didn't appear to be going on whilst we were staying which was a shame, although to be fair we didn't ask about them either so maybe they just put them on if you ask in advance.

One minor grievance was that I got a tiny shard of glass in my foot from the floor under my bed whilst in our room which was less than ideal. Didn't bring this up with management though as was very small but was annoying nonetheless, so maybe this is a small area for improvement.

All in all I would have no problem recommending Riad Verus to any of my friends and would definitely stay again should I return to Fes.

We are so pleased you found it easy to find the hostel and that the youtube video and directions were so helpful. pleased you found you got the best of 2 worlds, the hostel approach and the traditonalness of a Riad in Fes. We are glad you found the twin room spacioius and well decorated and appreciated the air con and the quality offered. We apologise for the shower room getting a tad wet, since then we have installed a shower curtain to mitigate the splash effect! We are glad you got good nights sleeps and that you liked the breakfasts and the fact alcohol is served. Thanks for finding Leanora to be such a credit to the Riad and that the early taxi was a life saver. We are pleased you found the terrace so pleasing and that you found us to be a trustworthy bunch and you enjoyed the organised tour of Fes on offer which you considered good value and you liked the selection of activities on offer.

Okay, so we booked this hostel as it was one of the cheapest on hostelbookers, and I'm so glad this was the first place we stayed in Morocco! The staff were superb, the building was gorgeous and the location was fantastic!

We arrived in Fes by plane and got an airport transfer from the hostel, and the driver walked us straight to the door for a reasonable price too! We stayed in the 6 bed dorm which was clean and had a nice private bathroom among other perks- the air con was a godsend! The hostel has a beautiful rooftop view over the medina, and lots of communal space too.

On arrival, we were invited on a FREE tour to the tombs overlooking all of Fes. We were taken around the sights that were hard to reach on foot, to the palace and also taken for shisha in a local cafe with the hostel owner. Almost too good to be true, i know!

And as if that wasn't enough, we were offered free drinks in the evenings (as it is advised women don't spend too much time out at night). This is something we did not expect in Morocco at all, and was a lovely surprise.

Needless to say, this riad is one of the best places to stay in Fes! Highly reccommended!

Thanks for thinking the Riad was amazing and for enjoying the tour up to the Tombs, the Palaces and being taken to a sheisha bar and enjoying the free drinks one night on our terraces. We are so pleased you liked your room and that the staff were fabulous, the building gorgeous and the location fantastic. we are pleased you thought the airport pick up was a reasonable price and that the air con in the room worked very well and that there was lots of space inside and plenty of places to chill. Thank you for recommending us on.

Good clean hostel in Fez, certainly up to European standards. The service was first class, the manager even arranged for a pair of glasses that I'd left at another hotel in Morocco to be posted back to the UK. The staff seem genuinely concerned for the well-being of guests.

The tour of the Medina organised by the hostel was good though it was a bit of a sales push for Moroccan rugs!

We are pleased you found the hostel to be up to European standard and very clean and with first class service and that the staff were all efficient and professional and we managed to locate and post you your lost property and that we care about the guests. Our tour of the Medina is great yes but once you get in those rug shops the sellers are good carpet salesmen as the old expression goes!

We had one night that we stayed in fes, and made last minute reservations with riad verus. Of course we screwed up the date, but verus worked with us and made sure or stay was great. The common room was gorgeous, the other patrons were inviting, the breakfast was delicious, and all of or needs were met as well as expectations exceeded. Thank you Riad Verus
