The whole place is beautiful with incredible attention to detail. We loved Laurent and Bernard! What a great french couple that own/run this riad! We wish we spoke French so we could hang out with them and drink wine! We liked it so much, we originally booked 2 nights and extended to 4.
The hostpitaltiy we recevied was top notch. Our first night Laurent walked us to dinner (15 minute walk) so we wouldn't get lost (the entire Fes medina is one big intimidating confusing labyrinth). She also will help make calls for whatever you need arranged while in town, and if you want help deciding what to do she is very helpful (i.e. booing excursions, getting guides, Hammams, etc). When the taxi did not show up to take us to the airport, Bernard drove us in his own car without hesitation.
Seriously though, they were great hosts and the breakfasts they prepared each morning were the best we had anywhere in Morocco, hands down. I'm talking 3 different types of freshly squeezed juice, a variety of fruit, warm beignets, scrambled eggs to order, smoked salmon, Moroccan and French-style crepes, a variety of jams, etc., etc. Unbelievable, and each morning was different.
Our room was great as well. Nice sitting area with couch and good bathroom (even a hair dryer!). We received complimentary bottles of water each day and each night there was a decorative tagine that we uncovered delicious moroccan sweets. Great touches.
Really nice terrace with panoramic view of the hillside and medina and cozy Moroccan lounge furniture. Great place to relax.
If we're being really picky, our only minor complaints are that the hosts sometimes smoke in their private area (it is there home after all) and the smell wafts up to our room. If you are sensitive to smoking, this may bother you. They also have an adorable, old dog (which we loved), but if you are allergic, its good to know in advance. Our room only had one small window, which was in the bathroom. All rooms overlook the central area, which can get noisy with people talking.
It definitely feels as though you are staying at someone's home, where they see you come at go. Felt a little uncomfortable at first, but then it became a comforting feeling. Could have used a few updates to feel more like a hotel (i.e. matching hangers in the closet, amenities in the bathroom).
Though this riad is in the medina, its not exactly centrally located. Its about a 15 walk to the nearest restaurant (Restaurant Zhoura-great food and pre fix menu for only 80 dihram) and it was definitely an isolated, dark walk back. After sundown, if you are venturing to restaurants on the other side of the medina, its best to take a cab. However, even the nearest cab pick up area is about a 10 minute walk from the riad. Unfortunately each night we were hassled by kids/young men trying to give us directions home and then asking for money. Not at all the riad's fault (Laurent even warned us of this ahead of time), but just for other travelers to be aware.
