“Outstanding hospitality in the most beautiful surroundings!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2011

As a true testament of how wonderful this riad is, this was the second time that we stayed here. From arranging the stay, till the moment we left, we felt more like friends visiting apposed to guests staying – that is how welcome everyone will make you feel.

Walking the small streets of the medina to Riad Laayoun, I had no idea what to expect the first time and then the doors open and it is just like a piece of heaven opening in front of you and you cannot believe that something this beautiful can exist behind the mud coloured walls. The mosaics, wood work, balconies, rooms all are exquisite – but my favourite was definitely the terrace where we spend many many hours overlooking the medina, listening to the sounds of Fes and calls to prayer. Perfect place to be for sunset or just to see a full moon hanging over Fes.

The hospitality – excellent!!! When I say the rooms are gorgeous, I really do mean that. And everyone working there will help you with everything you need, whether that be directions, booking a guide for a trip, making reservations at restaurants or sorting out a wonderful glass of Moroccan wine from Meknes – can really recommend the latter.

Jean-Claude and Simo are the perfect hosts – you will never have a need for everything and they will make sure that you are well looked after. And if you choose to eat at the riad, the food is excellent too, thanks to the great cooking skills of Rachida.

I fell in love with Fes when I first went and now know that I will keep on returning and I will always stay at Riad Laayoun. Not only is it great value for money, but it is beautiful and you will without doubt always feel welcome there.

Great location. Staff very caring and considerate. Riad is charming. We had dinner at the Riad one night and it was excellent. Would be nice if there was internet in the rooms instead of only in the dining room. Beautiful rooftop patio. I would certainly stay here again. Anyone with mobility issues would have issues as it is very vertical. We had a very good experience with both the guide and the cab driver the Riad recommends. Be careful in the Medina at night when it gets dark if you get away from the more populated areas.

We are two senior ladies, budget travelers. We hardly ever pay more than $50/nt for a hotel. We had read that we must stay in a riad in order to really experience Morocco. It was a struggle to find something near our price range. We paid $82/nt.

Riad Laayoun is gorgeous and we really like the area. We had a lively food market just a few streets away that was handy for snack and/or a quick dinner at night.

We booked the Paprika room, a tiny room with 2 twin beds, nightstand, small round table and chair, and a wardrobe (which needed hangers). We had a heater (also had one in the bath) that we used, as it was very cold. We were unfortunate that it was cold and raining the 3 days we were in Fez.

Our bathroom was detached. It was down the hall, down a step, then up a step and it also was small. The sink was extra small and the faucet situated so you could not get your hand under it. There was no curtain on the shower but we did have plenty of hot water. A minus . . . our towels were not changed, good thing we hung them up.

The downstairs area is really pretty and wi-fi was available in the dining area. It would be nice to have it in the rooms also and tv would be appreciated. Since it was cold when we were there, there was nothing to do in our room . . . and it was too cold to sit downstairs (for wi-fi) unless Jean-Claude turned the big propane heater on (which he did one night when we had a group visiting around the table). There is a beautiful terrace w/outdoor kitchen on the roof that would be wonderful in warm weather.

If you have any mobility problems, this might not be the riad for you as there are stairs to climb.

Breakfast was included and was fresh OJ, coffee, tea, cake, baguettes, crepes and delicious. We enjoyed meeting and visiting with Jean-Claude and his business partner Simo.

We spent 2 nights here and was very pleased with our experience. It's the people there who made our stay very pleasant. Jean-Claude, the owner, had arranged a taxi at the airport to take us to the riad. Then Jean-Claude met us personally to guide us to the riad from Place R'Cif (cars couldn't get very far inside the medina, obviously). It was unfortunately raining and cold, but we were greeted with sweet mint tea and pastries. We were made to feel very much at home. Simo and Rachida were equally pleasant and both extended a very warm welcome to us.

Being in Morocco for the first time, it felt a bit harrowing at first, especially arriving at night as we could not see where we were going. Although the next day, it was not too hard to find the way there once there was some daylight. As with finding any place inside the medina, it's tricky and you need a good map and hopefully some good daylight. If you look lost long enough, some little kid will probably take pity on you and guide you to your destination for a few dirhams.

Breakfast was also a highlight. The Moroccan breakfast crepes, honey, and jams were wonderful and gave us a good start in the morning. As we only had one full day in Fes, Jean-Claude recommended that we join 2 sweet Texan ladies who were also staying at the riad on a 5-hour medina guided walk. We were taken to the important sites inside the medina and it probably saved us a few good hours of walking on our own - afterwards it was easier to find your way around on your own.

Meeting and spending an evening talking and exchanging travel stories with the 2 aforementioned Texan ladies, a young couple from Berlin, and Jean-Claude himself also made the experience very much worthwhile. This place seems to attract good traveling folks.

The numerous reviews here sum up the many pluses of the Riad Laayoun. We appreciated Jean-Claude's help and hospitality and the beautifully restored Riad, as well as Simo and Rachida's hard work. This is a good value for money choice if you want a quiet and private base in the Medina. It is not a luxury Riad with a pool and sauna and every mod con you could think of, so don't go with the wrong expectations. I appreciated the wi-fi connection, and I didn't mind basing myself in the breakfast room to make it work!

Although the area immediately around the Riad is not impressive, during our one-week stay, we quickly realized that its location within the Medina is excellent. It benefits from being away from the backpacker end of the Medina at Bab Boujoud. But because it is so close to Place R'Cef, you can always get a petit taxi round to one of the other gates or anywhere else you want to go. At the same time, it is closer to the real attractions of the heart of the Medina, e.g. the Nejjarine Wood Museum, Seffarine Square, and so forth.

We stayed 2 nights (4 people) at this charming Riad with its charming staff; many stairs to climb but definetely a wonderfull experience; the rooftop view on the medina is beautiful...
We may suggest few improvements:
1. we has difficulties to find the Riad (arriving 9pm), recommending to get to the R´Clif Square and call the hotel for a pickup - it´s impossible to find it by yourself...
2. The sewage system of the 2 rooms we rented had problems.
3. Dinner was very good; breakfast can be improved.
4. The guide recommended by the hotel, was just OK

my wife and I stayed here for 4 nights and it was just wonderful. We stayed in a total of 4 different Riads while we were in Morocco and this by far was the most impressive and well run. You really step back into time with your stay here in terms of the shear visuals of the layout and look. However, the renovations have been tastefully done so as to not ruin from the 'old-world' charm. Breakfasts were good, hospitality was excellent and most importantly, the staff went out of their way to be helpful. After each of our frenetic days in and around Fes, Riad Laayoun was a very welcome oasis.
