“Very attractive hotel at the beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2009

We just returned from Agadir and the Tikida Dunas at the end of a Morocco holiday, starting in Marrakesch and leading us over the High Atlas and through the Sahara.
We choose the Tikida Dunas as we wanted a hotel directly at the beach and as we got a really good offer and did not regret it. After walking the new beach promenade, we had to tell we have been in the most appealing of the beachfront hotels. There are not as many shops and restaurants nearby as with the older hotels, but I think with the good food and drinks offer, not many people would go into other restaurants anyway.
Checkin was good and effective. We had a nice and large seaview room which seemed to be newly redone. Housekeeping was very good and friendly - they had the room redone every day during the short time we spent at breakfast, what we appreciate very much. We once had debris from a bird's feast after we got back to our room and housekeeping showed up to clean it shortly after we have called reception.
The food is good and a good choice. As others already stated, you get allocated your dinner table the first evening and as also mentioned, the tables are so close together that you have nearly no privacy or cant move your seat when you have to get up to get your next course. And then there have been other guests at our time, interfering with everybody and telling you what you have to do or not and lecturing other guests. IMO it would not be necessary to allocate the tables for dinner nor to have two services, they could easily have a steady flow and a free seating, as they make confusion with the table allocation anyway. We had to change 3 times the first evening, as they always gave us a table number they had already given to someone else before. Their excuses however came with a glass of champagne, once we had our fourth and definitive table. It is however very easy to avoid the big dining room, as they have two speciality restaurants (also buffet) at no extra costs. We liked the Moroccan very much, with a stilish interior and good service. There is only one service there and you can take all your time and arrive whenever you want, once you have your reservation. The other one was the Grill, also with much more privacy and space and also with a very good service. The drinks in those two restaurants are served at your table.
The food was very good all over and the choice more than good. We once had fresh tuna at lunch time and have been looking for it the next day again in vain when the cook came and asked if we were looking for something we could not find. We told him and he apologized, telling us that the tuna was still too warm for the buffet as it arrived from the fisherman too late, but he sent someone to get us some anyway and it was delicious.
Staff in general was very friendly and helpful and we really felt well taken care of. They seem to have problems with the key cards of some rooms and after we reported problems and someone came to fix it, they called the next day to inquire if everything went well now. We have never seen this in such a big hotel.
We found the bar offer sufficient, they had all the brands we asked for. We usually took our afterdinner drink to our room, ason the terrasse outside it was chilly with the wind and the bar (as already mentioned) is full of smokers and thus smoke, so they usually gave us a double right ahead and they remembered what we had the night before - imagine, with so many people they see each day.
We enjoyed the sun, but with the cool wind, you had to wear a sweater under the umbrella at the beach. Water was still rather cold, but it's the Atlantic. Mostly it was hazy in the morning, but we had a rental car and the haze was just along the coast, so easy to avoid.
We would return anytime for a relaxing time after a sighseeing journey through the country, but if you want to experience Morocco, this is not it, it could be anywhere.

Having travelled extensively and reading very positive reviews we were looking forward to this holiday. We would not reccomend staying at this hotel. It is a very busy, noisy hotel which is not reflected in any reviews we had read. We booked with Travel Republic but it was esentially a Thomas Cooke holiday. No leg room on the plane, my husband could not even put his food tray down . The staff at hotel very unfriendly and not very helpful. The rooms are very basic and in despearte need of updating. Our bathroom flooded twice from the bathroom above us, coming through the lights and soaking everything that was in the room. We had to report it twice before anything was done. No offer of changing rooms, we were told by receaption that we had a lovely room!! I would not reccomend going out to shop at Souk's or any other trips unless with an organised excursion. You will not be left alone and pestered within an inch of your life.
On our last evening my husband contracted food poisoning and was extremely ill. We had to call out a doctor and i had to fight with the reception staff to keep the room longer than the 12.00pm checkout so that he could sleep. They eventually let me keep the room until 3.00pm. Thomas Cooke holiday rep was hopeless and i was offered no help with my husband. I asked for extra leg room seats on way home so that he would be comfortable and was told that they would be £30 each, by the time i got to the desk i was then told it would be £76 and called a liar when i disputed this. After getting angry and saying that i just wanted to get on the flight and get out of the country they said i could have two extra leg room seats for £36 which i took. The final straw was when i was sat by a very drunk man who stank of alcohol and did not look like he had washed in weeks making me feel very ill all flight. I am amazed and applalled that he was even let on the flight. Obviously money is more important than passenger comfort. Definately would not reccomend this holiday. So glad to be back on home soil.

Just returned from Tikida Dunas and would summarise as follows:-

THE GOOD -
Superb breakfast choice, especially donuts and pancakes. Not good for 'full English' if that's your scene.
Delicious deserts - tiramasu, strawberry gateaux, pastries, strawberries.
Contrary to other remarks on here we found the alcoholic drinks just fine. Compared with previous all inclusive resorts in Turkey the drinks were superior - branded gin, whisky, Martini and the rose wine was more than satisfactory. Occasional champagne.
Extensive pool areas with plenty of sunloungers.
Waiters, maids, reception staff were all friendly and efficient, even the Thomas Cook rep was fine.
Agadir airport was fine - more than I could say about Manchester! Even the passport control staff were friendly and smiled!!!!!!
Large bedrooms.
Attractive gardens.
Pleasant public gardens to front of hotel, across the road.

THE BAD -
Allocated tables at dinner were VERY close to each other. It felt as if we were sharing with other couples.
Worst part of the whole holiday was the lack of 'quiet' areas to have an evening drink. The whole of the lobby was utilised and extremely noisy. Frequently it was not possible to find a seat. Worst of all, however, was the fact that smoking was allowed! Smokers found it highly amusing to hang around the bar blowing smoke everywhere. The air was full of smoke and we could smell it on our clothes afterwards.
Sunloungers need updating. Most uncomfortable with no matresses and did not fold down flat so impossible to lie on stomach for any length of time.
Food not allowed round pool.
Outside floor tiles eroding with holes appearing everywhere. Builders continuously trying to repair.
We were harrassed, to the extent of men running after us when we tried to go for a drink, by taxi drivers insistant that we should go for a taxi ride instead of a walk!
Tried to use the internet but it was very slow and cost about £1.50 for 15 minutes so gave up!

All in all - a good holiday - would not go back to this hotel nor to Agadir, but had a good break with lovely sunny weather and good food.

We've holidayed all over the world and I have to say this is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. It reminds me of a Mexican hotel complex (I've stayed at the Moon Palace and Aventura Spa Palace there) with everything you could need in the hotel grounds and with a much shorter flight time from the UK. The hotel has a great range of food and there is always something on offer, even for fussy eaters who want to stick to pizza, pasta or burger and chips! The staff will do anything for you and they don't ask or expect tips. Our luggage carrier even looked embaraased when we tried to give him some money and refused to take it... Simply saying it was not necessary. How often does that happen?

The ppol is large and has areas of different character so you can vary your position from day to day and feel like you are somewhere new. There is also a great animation team (one of whom looks like Christiano Ronaldo) who cracked me up with their joking around all week. Hassan is not so good at his English so his technique is simply to say that "I Kill you" if you won't play darts with him, but its all fun!

I like to get out and see sights but Agadir was flattened by an Earthquakle in 1957 and there isn't much left. The new marina is simply a handful of shops and has no local; architectural style - it could be anywhere in the wetsern world and not arabic at all. You can also find a Pizza Hut and Mcdonalds on the Promenade which I think is a shame in such a place.

I walked along the seafront and looked at all the other hotels, and to be fair I think this is undoubtedly the biggest poolside and looked to me to be the best looking hotel in Agadir. I certainly wouldn't fault it. If you want to stay around your hotel and simply relax then it is great. If you want sights then go to Egypt, its a similar holiday.

The hassle is certinaly overated, having been to Egypt and Tunisia the Moroccans seems less bothered about slling you their grandmas. I only got approached by 3 people all holiday, and one of those was to try and sell me some Hashish outside a nightclub at 3am! The Souk only sells fruit and veg etc, so if you want souvenirs go to a store. Taxi's are pretty much 30dinar for 5 setare mercs or 20dinars for 3 seat maximum orange hatchback cabs. For that price you can go anywhere in Agadir. The exchange rate was 11.89 dinar to the pund sterling when I went.

Oh yeah, and I don't have kids yet (one on the way soon) but this hotel is also brilliant for kids. I went with my wife and another couple. We had a great time.

Having just returned from a one week all inclusive stay at this Hotel here is what I thought.

Check In.

Check in was very quick and smooth as Thomas Cook gave us the forms to fill out on the coach which saved us queing at reception. We were taken to our room on the baggage truck but when we entered the room it was clear that it hadn't been cleaned with wet towels on the bed and skid marks in the toliet. We were asked to come back in 15 minutes so we went for a drink. We returned an hour later and the room had been cleaned to a high standard.

The Rooms

The room we had was very spacious, in fact enormous. It had 2 single beds pushed together with a large shower room, and seperate wc. It had plenty of wardrobe space and 3 huge mirrors. We were on the ground floor and so the balcony was also a good size with a table and 2 chairs. The tv had 25 channels but only cnn and bbc world news in English.

The Pools

3 large outside pools, and indoor pool and some were salt water. They were clean and well kept.

The Bar

The bar was pretty poor on all fronts. The cocktails were not really cocktails as I didn't see one shaker behind the bar and they tasted terrible. The beer was weak and tasteless. The wine was poored out of a plastic 2 ltr bottle and the spirits were unbranded. The service was on many occassions was rude, unless you spoke French and then you occasionally got a smile.

The Restaurant

Breakfast

this was excellent with everything you could think off apart from full english (if thats what your looking for). Plenty of fruit, pastries and juices and excellent coffee.

Lunch

Again food was good, with plenty of salad, meat choices and lovely desert options. My only critisism of lunch that it done in a very small restaurant and so it was a scramble to get to the food.

Dinner

On arrival you were allocated your table which you would sit at for the rest of the holiday. There were 2 sittings and we were allocated the later 8.30 slot. Food again was excellent for a buffet with all types of food and it changed slighty everyday. Also you had the option to book in their Moroccan or Grill restaurants. We only managed the Moroccan and it was very good although a buffet again.

Entertainment

Every night a different band would play in the bar ( when I say band -I mean a keyboard and guitar playing cheesy French love songs) On the main stage the animacion team would do a show and hand out awards to winners of the days activities. The whole experience was very painful and not very popular. While the animacion team were nice people they were not born entertainers. Having been to other Riu hotels this entertainment wasn't even in the same ball park.

The evenings were a problem for us as the rep told us not to venture outside the hotel during the evening as it wasn't safe so we relied on the hotel to keep us occupied but with the poor drinks and lack of entertainment we were very bored.

Agadir

Having been told not to go out in the evening we went out into Agadir a few times during the day. We wished we hadn't bothered. The Beach was dirty and awash with rubbish, the streets were half finished with huge man holes left open to fall into. The locals either stare at you or try and pretend they know you and hassle you to go to their shop. The shops were few and far between even at the newly built marina. In fact on the whole Agadir has zero going for it apart from sunshine, it's a dump.

Hotel Overview

Having walked past most of the hotels in Agadir(there aren't many), the Riu Tikida Dunas looked the nicest from the outside. If you really want to come to Agadir then I can say overall this hotel is ok. Having been to other Riu hotels and many other beach resorts I really wouldn't bother.

I have for sometime used others reviews on Trip advisor to plan my holidays and felt I should give something back.

We returned from a 7 night stay at the ClubHotel Riu Tikida Dunas late last night and all thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

The Room

The room was excellent, all rooms in the resort appeared to be of exactly the same size and are plenty big enough for a family of 4 (incl. a 6 year old and a 3 month old baby) to share. Room was very clean, my wife has higher standards than most and even she was impressed.

The Food

Food was great, plenty of choice, it is an all-inclusive so eventually you will eat the same thing more than once, but is to be expected and was not repititive. According to the rep, the food here is the best of the all inclusive resorts in Agadir, am not sure if that is true or not. Breakfast and Evening meal are in the main restaurant, lunch is in the snack bar which doubles as the grill on an evening. The grill and Alhambra have to be booked, are very good but are also buffet style but do not let this put you off as the food is excellent here and as they are small no queues at all

The Staff

The staff are fantastic, OK they work their tips all week but they are all so friendly and really make the holiday.

The Bars

Pool bar, Snack/Pool Bar and Main Bar, serve wine, beer, spirits and some nice cocktails, barmen are particularly friendly and service is quick, cocktails are nice and there are about 6 alcoholic and 4 non alcoholic available

The Resort

Agadir is still up and coming. The promenade is almost complete, but you do not hear or see any work which may be taking place around the resort. A new marina built recently is nearly all open and a nice area for shopping. Watch out for getting sand blasted along the promenade if the wind gets up. We walked on the roads to Agadir one day but it was hard going as we had a pushchair and most pavements are unfinished, think open manhole covers everywhere. We say workers though so would imagine this will be sorted shortly

The Weather

Awesome sun, we all burnt through factor 30 on first day, however it did get too windy at times

Excursions

As we were only on holiday for 7 days and had our baby with us, we only did one excursion which I would highly recommend to a town called Taroudant. Is a half day tour to a walled medina which has not been touristified and is as Moroccan as I think you would get

The Other Guests

My big gripe with travelling abroad is the other guests and generally it is the other english guests that ruin the experience. We have all done it and paid pennies for a last minute deal only to arrive and see a naked fat English bloke hammered and urinating in the pool, well trust me that sort of person would not go to this hotel. There were some families and also lots of couples of various ages and I don;t think I saw one really drunk person all holiday. However be aware this is not predominantly an English hotel but French. I would also say there were more Germans than English, therefore until the staff know you they will talk French to you automatically

Airport

Agadir airport was quite pleasant on the way home. No matter what they tell you on the flight, there are plenty of duty frees available, there are 2 shops competing with each other and prices are reasonable. They do not accept local currency however so spend this before or change it in the bank at the airport first

Overall
We had a fantastuic holiday and were all saddened to go home and would love to go back. Highly recommended

Hope somebody finds this review in some way useful for choosing your hotel in Agadir

This Hotel from the Manager down to all staff without exceptance are friendly, helpful and
available to help guests at all times. Easy check in on arrival, room spacious and clean, porter takes cases to room, sea view as requested.Breakfast and dinner taken in main restaurant with plenty of choices for even a fussy eater and understood the needs of being diabetic which was appreciated. The lunchtime experience weather permitting can be quite o.k. too many cats hovering around for titbits though. if the weather is too windy for eating out the inside snack bar (where lunch is taken) can be a cross between the worse school canteen and a rugby scrum - no fault of the chefs working hard at every station but the guests- but who wants to eat too much at lunch time anyway? The entertainment team work hard all day and do not bother you if you do not wish to join in.Evenings, Only one outside show per week which is a shame because the theatre is a decent area with bar and No Smoking, the rest of the week the enertainment team put on acts!
Lovely beach which stretches for miles and the promenade nice to walk along to the Marina (no All day English breakfasts and kiss me quick hats what a joy)
No fighting for sun beds by the pools which were inviting but a little cold for our stay end of April beg. of May.
Overall a relaxing holiday with good weather (can get windy at times 'Atlantic Coast') only 3,1/2 hrs from U.K. Good food and plenty to drink.
Pool towels, safe & mini fridge replenished with 2 x 1,1/2 litre bottle water daily inld. in price.
