I really wanted to love this hotel. It is absolutely charming upon arrival. The very helpful doormen/porters grabbed my bags from my cab, brought me into the courtyard, sat me down and brought me a cold washcloth and hot tea with a cookie selection. You checked in while sitting down and enjoying your tea. There was nice live local guitar playing in the courtyard. The courtyard is beautiful. A definite 5 star welcome. The problem is that outside of this first impression and the stunning pool, the hotel is simply not a five star hotel, or a four star hotel for that matter.
My room was ok. I was on the third floor facing the new construction to the south of the hotel. I believe that I was in a smoking room because there was an ashtray in the room, but you could not smell any smoke. When I arrived in the room there were two double beds. I had the porter call housekeeping and they converted the entire bed into a king. The entire room has one of those power saver devices that requires you to keep a plastic key in it to keep the room power on. The problem with that is that everything turns off when you pull the key out to leave the room. Your computer stops charging and the refrigerator stops cooling. I just threw an old hotel key in the device and kept the power on for my entire stay.
The largest issue with the room was the housekeeping. I had two washcloths when I checked in on day one. I used one of them the first night and they were both taken for the remainder of my stay. They were never returned and I went washclothless for the remainder of my week. I also had to call about every other day to get the bath towels replaced. I do not normally use two bath towels a day but I had to because my bathmat was taken and not replaced half of the time. Soap was another issue. On day one I had two nice bars of soap for washing my hands and showering and by day three I was out (The soap dishes do not drain as I learned) The problem was that the soap was never replaced. I ended up showering with shampoo the remainder of my week. I called the front desk a few times and had towels replaced, but the soap never made it back. I was attending a conference with man other persons all staying at the Sofitel and we all ran out of soap.
Internet is free! Fantastic! It did not work in the main conference room, but other than that it worked pretty well in my room and the courtyard and by the pool.
TV: Three English channels, BBC, CNN and an MTV like channel in several languages. I don't watch a lot of TV, but for a top hotel it would be nice to get one English programming channel that was not news only. There was also an Italian channel and lots of French TV.
The pool and beach are fantastic. The pool is simply amazing and certainly worth 5 stars. Other reviewers have covered how spectacular and relaxing it is.
The restaurant is very expensive to be honest not that great. You are paying for the poolside ambiance. I would have loved a more Moroccan flair to the restaurant food. Beer was 60 MAD a beer. That is too much.
Breakfast was free and was pretty good.
In the evenings the amazing courtyard turns into the lounge area/bar. Good on the hotel for utilizing their greatest asset.
If the room, the housekeeping and the restaurant could have even approached the courtyard and the pools offerings to the hotel, it would be a shoe in for a four or maybe even a five star hotel. But as is, it is a tough sell as a three star.
The hallways are all exposed to the elements. The hallways open up to the stars or some other outdoors exposure. It is a great look, but the carpet is absolutely kicked.
Bottom line is it looks like Sofitel has purchased a fantastic hotel off of somebody else and then simply has failed to follow through after jumping off of the solid bones provided.
Location on the beach: Hotel is a bit south of the action, but fantastic for evening runs and if you do not mind a little pre/post dinner walk, you can easily walk to the restaurants in 15 minutes. Do not eat at the hotel. Either walk or take a cab. Cabs will run you 20 MAD to the restaurants that are more central.
Would I recommend? Yes, but only because of the beauty of the hotel. Do not come for top hotel class service or restaurants. Come for the pool and ambiance of the courtyard. I think that it is expensive for what you get and it markets itself outside of its hotel class.
