“Lovely hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

We have just returned from a weeks stay at the above hotel, we played 5 rounds of golf 2 on the ocean and 3 at the soleil. The first impression of the hotel was good, but we booked a deluxe sea view room and was disappointed when taken to our room and it was a sea view but no terrace! This hotel does have some rooms with terraces but they are lower down so a restricted sea view! And another supplement to pay we had already paid extra for the sea view so stayed in the room we was allocated. A little disappointed, but the service and friendly staff everywhere around the hotel far made up for it, the pool guys right through to the staff who seated us for dinner were so welcoming nothing was too much trouble, the concierge carried our golf bags to the shuttle bus and back every day, fab service so a big thankyou to you all for a lovely week in agadir.
The golf was fantastic only us on the course we could play as many holes as we wanted as both courses have more than 18 holes it was great we didn't play the same configuration twice, the caddies are very reasonable, about £9 a round but give whatever you like, very knowable and improved our game, while on their course. We had a great week, BUT!!! The weather was so disappointing we expected sun sun sun but we got very heavy cloud so heavy the sun couldn't get through it was chilly at night twice had to wear jeans!! Un heard of on holiday. It's pretty topical for agadir we was told its like that (fresh), don't think we'd return for that reason but glad we went.

This hotel begun my love of morocco. Its luxurious relaxing and comfortable. Best time to go is from November and February as the temperature is always in the early 20s. Cant wait to return. Prepare for the taxis into the marina they will rip you off if they can. seek the advice of the concierge at the front desk they will let you know what the normal prices are.

everything was ok except the service and the noise which wont let anyone sleep....
sofitel should idvise couples and travellers who want to relax to stay at the new sofitel which is next to it. this hotel is more suitable to group of friends or families with kids.

The Sofitel Royal Bay sits right on the coast of Agadir and is well positioned for a holiday of sunbathing and relaxing.

First off, Sofitel's best features:
Excellent outdoor seating with a range of different fixtures such as hammocks, sofas, loungers, mattresses and the usual table & chairs. The pool is huge and when we went, fairly empty, meaning you could go for a long swim and not be crowded. Lots of palm trees and it really has a great tropical feel to it. At the back of the hotel the beach is separated by only 5 metres of promenade. The first part of the beach is fenced off private for Sofitel guests only, again filled with loungers and sofas and lots of large straw umbrellas to keep you in the shade. Over the rope fence and you are on the main beach - high tide and its only 20 metres to the ocean! There is a table tennis table and a tennis court and the concierge had chess, checkers and backgammon when we asked for board games.

The so-so features:
The food was very mixed. The breakfast buffet is very good - pancakes, all sorts of bread and pastries, cereals, yogurts, hams and cheeses and lots and lots of fresh fruit. However lunch was awful. The hotel has lots of different restaurants open at different times and serving different things (e.g. evening buffet, asian cuisine, fish dishes etc) but if like us you like a small lunch (sandwiches versus a main meal) you will struggle to find something that suits. The only restaurant open that serves 'lunch style' food is the outside Mediterranean one, with "toasted bread" sandwiches. These are truly awful: a slightly toasted cheap baguette filled with a limp piece of lettuce, 2 very watery and bland tomatoes and then the filling of your choice which if you pick ham, is one fatty slice of tasteless ham. This costs 110 dirhams (£8.42!!) although you get a handful of thin chips with it. Dinner was ok, but the food isn't 5-star: the buffet (whilst pricey) offered the best selection of food including the tagines which appeared every night regardless of the buffets particular theme of the evening. The Asian restaurant's chefs however were too liberal with the salt and the dishes weren't particularly authentic (although wasn't really expecting them to be).

The bad features:
Whilst many of the waiters were very friendly and after a few days recognised us and greeted us, the concierge staff (especially a girl called Fatima) were incredibly sour faced and not particularly helpful. When you arrive at the hotel you are taken through to the central riad-style courtyard to check-in. We were immediately told we needed to put a 7000 dirhams deposit down which would pay for the evening meals etc and left over would be paid back at the end. No happy welcome or attempt at a conversation, just pay this now please. The hotel uses credit card style keys for rooms, and 4 times my card stopped working. Each time the concierge unapologetically shrugged and told me not to put it near any electronic devices or other credit cards as they fixed the card. This was especially infuriating as we were on the 3rd floor and had to go all the way down to fix the card and then up again. Finally when we left, they had accidentally added 3 extra buffets onto our bill. Whilst they did sort it and remove them, the lack of sincere apology and sheer indifference did not make check out particularly pleasant. No "hope to see you soon!!" either.

The bah-humbug features:
On one of the days we were there they had a "day of music" which culminated in a live band playing music outside near the pool. This was mentioned in the daily newsletter they leave on your bed after room service, however the newsletter failed to mention that they were closing all the hotel's restaurants that evening and forcing the guests to sit outside next to the music and eat a buffet in tables of 10. Now, for most people this might be fine, but "forced fun" on a honeymoon is not what we had in mind. I was not going to sit on a table in the cold with other people with live music so loud that you couldn't hear yourself think. To be fair, the musicians were good (although La Bamba was played..), but Agadir gets quite chilly after 8pm and the ocean breeze is a cold one. We opted to go to the hotel next door, the Sofitel Thelassa and have a quiet dinner there. I was not impressed by the lack of alternatives or communication about this event.

Tips if you are considering coming to this hotel:
1. Every time you put an item on the tab for your final bill (food, drinks etc) make a note of the amount and check your final bill agrees with this. If we had not done this I don't know if we would have spotted the 3 extra buffets that appeared on the bill
2. If you like light lunches rather than main meals, walk along the promenade towards the town and after 15 minutes you'll get to lots of cafes - do not use the hotel!
3. If you are non smokers like us, this hotel has all its restaurants & rooms non-smoking. Smoking is permitted in the main riad-style courtyard and can often stink a bit, but it is open roofed so it's not too awful.
4. The hotel provide fresh fruit and some pastries in your room (refreshed every 2 days). Take along sandwich bags or cling film so you can eat these when you're out and about. I struggled to find anything to put these in as my handbag invariably got sand all over it.

Overall, I probably would have rather stayed in the hotel next door, the Sofitel Thelassa & Spa. The Royal Bay is a good hotel and has great facilities; but the awful lunches, unpleasant concierge staff and 'forced fun' do not make this 5-star or luxury in the slightest.

Stayed at royal bay for our honeymoon it is a fantastic place and definitely lives up to its 5 stars. The staff were very friendly and helpful nothing was to much trouble. The room was very clean and the bed was perfect. The hotel has everything you could want and is right by the beach. However the food and drinks are very expensive at the hotel

We arrived tired from our long trip ( via Marrakech ) late at night . As the taxi pulled up and we walked into reception I could feel my stress melt away . The relaxing decor, the sweet smell ,the running water and smiles of the staff set the scene . We were upgraded to a room that opens out to the swimming pool . I have to say that rooms are beautiful , but if you want a balcony you must pay for the swimming pool rooms . The balcony rooms do not have good views . But after from that the rooms are sheer luxury.
The pool and surrounding area have an abundance of luxurious hammocks and big beds where you feel like a king . The service is amazing . Downside is that in October the main pool was not heated ,hence no one was swimming in there . There is however a small pool which is lovely .
The facilities are lovely. However if you want a beauty treatment I would pop over to the Sofitel Spa next door . Far superior in surroundings of the spa and quality of treatments . That said the spa hotel is very 'shinny' in decor . Lovely lovely looking forward to going again ! A place where all those stresses melt away

Room Tip: Got for the luxury pool rooms
