“Beautiful, but Algerian company advisable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2011

I went by myself, and I have to say that I would have definitely preferred to have a guide or any local company. The Kasbah is a network of very small aisles and passages, and its very easy to get lost among them. The Algerians actually used this area to evade the French during the resistance in the 50s and early 60s. There are some beautiful old buildings, and its definitely worth seeing, even if its a brief visit like mine.

“Stunning myriad of buildings, alleyways and history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2011

The age of the buildings alone is worth the visit. Getting lost in the myriad alleyways with twists and turns adds to the adventure.
The sad thing is the decay and destruction - both regular wear and tear but also the impact of the earthquake. Many buildings are hanging on literally to the scaffolding supporting them.
Advisable to only travel during daylight hours unless you have a tour guide with you. Nothing to be scared of but there is a fair amount of petty crime (pick pockets etc) the later in the day you go.
