“Great place to stay. Everything totally satisfactory.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2008

My wife and I spent four nights here while sightseeing in the greater Des Moines area and everything was excellent. The hotel is just three years old and has been maintained like new. It is just off I-35, but set back from the main roads, making it very quiet.

The lobby is large, with two sitting areas plus a business center area with two computers and a printer. Our room with a king-size bed was large, and very nicely decorated & color-coordinated. Our bed had a thick pillow-top mattress, with lots of pillows, both soft and firm, and was very comfortable. Our room included a microwave and small refrigerator. All walls were wallpapered, adding to the attractiveness of the room. Our bath area had a marble countertop with lots of room for personal toiletries. It also was fully wallpapered. Internet was both wireless and wired in our room and both worked perfectly.

All of the staff were very pleasant throughout our stay and very helpful with local directions and restaurant suggestions. There are many restaurants in the area. Chips, Waterfront Seafood Market and Outback are within easy walking distance, almost directly across the street.

The breakfast area, just off the lobby, is large and and included a large-screen TV and sitting area. Breakfasts were very good throughout our stay and included several hot items plus the standard warm Holiday Inn Express cinnamon buns. A full-time attendant tried to keep everything replenished and clean, but with a full hotel including many families with children, was overwhelmed at times.

The hotel also has an indoor pool and hot tub, and an exercise room with several machines.

The rates were a little higher than we would have liked, but not out of line considering the quality of the hotel, and that we were there the week of the Iowa State Fair and the final weeks of summer vacations. We very definitely would stay here again and very definitely would recommend it to others.

We stayed here for one night in July 2008, while driving to the Minnepolis area.
Everything was above average or better.
The room was very large, the king bed was huge and very comfortable, the pool and exercise rooms looked good (though we didn't use either), the whole property was clean and well mainained. The location was excellent - right by I-35, and across the street from 2 or 3 restaurants. The wireless internet was vey fast. The new hot breakfast was good and plentiful.
The only downside was that it seems a little more expensive han most Holiday Inn Expresses.

Check in was quick and efficient. Unusual elevator access. Noticed spots in the room that were not perfectly clean. Comfy bed and bedding, I slept straight through. Fast Wifi. Got paper, receipt and hot breakfast early.

This hotel was very clean and the rooms were spacious and well decorated. The room I was in came with a microwave and minifridge. The bed was comfortable and the highspeed internet was exceptionally fast compared to many other hotels I have stayed at and both wireless and wired internet were available in the room. The normal holiday Inn express breakfast was served and was of their normal quality which is good.
The only drawback is that the hotel seemed to be very understaffed. There was often a sign on the front desk stating that the staff member was away from the desk and would return. This was true in the morning when attempting to check in as well as throughout the day. When the staff was available they were very friendly and responsive. Overall a decent place to stay.

  • Liked — room cleanliness and wireless internet speed
  • Disliked — hard to find the staff when you need them

We stayed at this hotel on a recent trip to the Iowa Speedway. We got a great corporate rate (less than $100 a night including tax), which definitely made a difference in rating this experience. If we'd paid full rack rate, I probably would have called this a neutral/average experience.

There are many hotels closer to the Speedway than this one (it's about 40 minutes from there), but if we could get that corporate rate again, we'd choose this one for its convenience to the interstate, free breakfast, comfy beds, clean and quiet rooms, and two restaurants within walking distance. It's right next to the Tones spice factory, and you can definitely smell spices in the air when you're outside the hotel (not noticeable inside) -- we had fun playing Name That Spice. The hotel is right next to the interstate, but the rooms are very quiet. Friendly staff, plenty of parking, etc. The free breakfast left a little to be desired, but it was still free -- and better than some I've seen. The elevator was s-l-o-w, but the stairs were a clean and well-lit option.

We were very pleased with the accommodations. A new, clean hotel. I LOVE that they have done away with bedspreads and envelope the blankets in clean white sheets. There is a nice pool and spa area, as well as a small workout area. When you're traveling on the road you never know what an area will have to offer. This was a welcome respite.
