I was enticed to try this place through Groupon. Probably would not have given it a shot otherwise. The location is very unappealing. My husband and I went in and sat at the bar while we waited for a table. The bar seats are very close together and you are almost forced into conversations with other patrons. The folks sitting next to us raved about everything on the menu. I do not like microbrews, so only my husband tried one of their beers. They did not have a pale ale, so he asked the bartender for a suggestion for a hoppy beer. She suggested the Hop Rocket and then offered him a sample. He said it was good, but not as good as Emmett's. I had a Blue Moon. The bartender did not explain the wine special for the evening. The people sitting next to us explained that on Tuesdays, they offer one red, one white and one fruity wine for 1/2 price. I definately would have selected a wine to try had I known. After a short wait, we were shown to a table.
We were immediately greeted by a server. Unfortunately, I cannot remember his name. I asked him about the half price wine deal, so I do not know if he would have brought it up or not. I then ordered the fruity wine special, which was Pearlicious. It was very good, very refreshing. I am not sure I could drink more than a glass, definately not more than two. It would be a very good wine to enjoy sitting outside on a hot summer night.
The waiter made a few appetizer recommendations, but we decided to try the cheddar ale soup. We ordered a cup, which was quite large, and very filling. The soup had been recommended by our friends at the bar. I thought it was okay. Not really creamy, a bit grainy. Probably would not order that again.
I really was struggling to find anything on the menu that jumped out at me. We had just had pizza the night before so really was not in the mood for pizza again. The people at the bar recommended the burgers, so my husband and I decided to split one burger and one pizza. The Vintner burger did not sound good to me, lathered in BBQ sauce and steak sauce, but the waiter recommended it as well, so we went with that and one of his favorite pizzas the steak and blue cheese. Again, it didn't even sound good to me, but I decided to be adventerous and try it anyway.
All the food came in a reasonable amount of time. I was pleasantly surprised with the burger. It was very, very good. I would definately order it again. The accompanying fries were average fries, nothing special. Could do something to enhance those perhaps. The pizza is another story. Not good at all. I was really expecting a very, very thin crust. Maybe I just do not understand what woodfired pizza is. However, I could live with the crust. I did not enjoy the steak and blue cheese toppings. Not a good combination for a pizza in my opinion. And we definately ordered too much food. After the soup, we should have split either a burger or a pizza. We ate the burger and took the pizza home. We have a teenaged son who will eat anything.
The high point in this experience was the service. With the exception of the bartender who was probably just too busy to engage in anything more than ordertaking, everyone seemed genuinely pleasant and concerned that you were enjoying your experience.
I also felt the prices were very reasonable. We had 1 beer, one 1/2 price glass of wine, 2 soups, the burger and pizza and our bill was $44.
Will I go back? For the wine, yes. For the food, probably not. If they come out with another Groupon, I might give it another shot on the food and go with something more traditional.
