We went to Silverwood in August during the week so the crowds were what I would consider light. I've read some other reviews about it being dirty, the staff unfriendly, and the food expensive. Have these people ever been to a theme park other than the Disney ones? I've been to several water parks and live near one in Seattle, WA and let me tell you, Silverwood had the cleanest water park I've ever seen. No band-aids floating in the wave pool and no garbage on the walkways is always a plus at a water park!
I couldn't believe the price of the food!! $2 for a bottle of water? That beats $3.50 at wild waves and $5 at Disney(2004 prices). A hot dog will set you back $2.99 and a corn dog $2.49, but they are hot and taste good (other theme parks will charge upwards of $6 for a corn dog, you've gotta be kidding me!) We splurged more on food than at any other theme park only because I'm so used to getting gouged. This isn't the case at Silverwood. If you like chinese, the Wok in the Park had the best deal with $6 buying you a large (by my standards) take-out container with chow-mein and your choice of entree.
The waterslides were fun, especially the one where you can put a bunch of people in a raft and go down (I think this is a fairly new attraction). There are two wave pools, one for older kids and one for younger ones although all can use them. They also have some speed slides. We didn't wait more than 15 minutes at the most to use the slides. We also had no trouble finding nice lounge chairs in a nice area by the lazy river, even in the afternoon (a lot of water parks you have to be there when they open and then stampede to get chairs. Why not just invest in more chairs????). The lazy river got a little crowded in the late afternoon, but the people in it were behaving and those that didn't were reined in by the lifeguards. I especially like the swim-up bar and the fact that you can take drinks (both alcoholic and non) with you on the tubes. You also don't have to have a tube to enjoy the lazy river. My kids aren't ones to just sit and float so they got swim goggles and had a great time splashing around and around the river (about 200 times by my estimate).
The amusement side of the park was the same in terms of cleanliness and affordability food wise. The only place I saw that seemed steep price-wise were the midway games, but then they are always like that whereever you go. I did notice the $8 refillable soda bottles for sale, but funnily enough at almost every food stand in the park I saw signs that said "no refills for bottles here" or something to that effect.
The magic show (free) was great and my kids loved it (10 and 12). We rode the train ride which was amusing and a nice respite from walking. On that note, if you can walk a few miles you will be fine at Silverwood. Some people gripe about the lack of in-park transportation but it really isn't needed. This isn't Disneyworld.
As for the rides. . .the lines were longer here than in the water park. I'm not sure why they only had one car running on each roller coaster. In any case, if you decide to ride Tremors be warned that this is the bumpiest, jerkiest wooden coaster I've ever been on. We all had headaches after getting off, but I suppose adrenaline junkies would love it. The other wooden coaster was not nearly as "jerky". I admit I didn't go on Aftershock only because I'm a chicken. The river raft ride was fun (you will get soaked) and the log ride was great. My kids loved the bumper cars, bumper boats, and tanks where you shoot balls and water.
Parking is $4, but I've paid $10 and up to park in other theme park lots. The tunnel you have to walk under is simply that: a tunnel. I didn't notice giant wads of gum or garbage like some other reviewers on this site. It beats having to cross the highway. There were "bag searchers" stationed near the entrance, but they searched bags randomly and I didn't see them search any when I passed through the line.
I have to give a separate paragraph for the staff. They were the most friendly people I have ever run into in a theme park (including Disney!!). I was expecting, at best, a surly demeaner considering most of them were teens and young adults, but NO!!! They were very friendly, smiling, and helpful. I guess I am just used to that type of attitude at the water park I usually go to close to home. The people taking the tickets at the front gate were hands-down the friendliest ticket-takers I've come across anywhere who wished us a great day and said they looked forward to seeing us the next day as we had two-day tickets.
Yes, some people have griped about the crowds and wait in lines for food, drinks, rides, etc. Well that is what you should expect at a theme park! To these people I say: don't vacation at a theme park.
All in all, I will definitely be coming back to Silverwood. Yes the park is on the smaller side compared to others, but you can't beat the cleanliness, friendliness, and general laid-back feeling that this park gives you.
