Owner description: The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

“Great view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2009

A great view of the valley from the Nuuanu Pali lookout. It was very windy on the day that I was there. The wind made it seem cold out. Still enjoyed the view very much.

“Gorgeuous Place......But!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2008

The best and coolest view in Hawai'i !
Unfortunately, tourism has taken it's toll in trash.
As you look out on the bottom walk way, it appears that some miscreants have tossed cups, bottles and cans into the wind, only to have them deposited out of reach below the rail.
What a travesty!!!!
It appears that a tall chain link fence is in order on the look out, somewhat spoiling the view, but preserving the beauty!
Too bad.......but that's the fabric of some of today's visitors!

“Dramatically beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2007

The Pali Lookout boasts beautiful views of dramatic cliffs and a wind-tossed ocean. It is a historical place where King Kamehameha's troops fought to unit the Hawaiian islands.

Take the Pali Highway to get to the Pali Lookout. There is a parking area and a short paved trail up to the lookout (5 minute walk). Usually a vendor or two will be there to tempt you with barbequed shrimp or the like. I have been to the lookout two or three times and it is always quite windy - just the aerodynamics of the place. When I was a little girl, my dad had me make a wish and attempt to toss a coin in the ocean - it doesn't happen! The wind will always blow it right back up. It's quite entertaining, so bring a quarter along for that.

You will only need to spend 5 or 10 minutes at the lookout, and it may not be worth your time to go out of your way to enjoy this view, but the Pali Highway is a spectacular jungle drive that is worth the extra time if you are planning on crossing the island anyway.

“A must see”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2007

The lookout is located on the Eastern side of the island. We passed it often since we stayed in Kailua. We actually stoped there right after we picked up the car rental from the airport before we checked into our rental cottage. All I can stay is that it was a wonderful way to begin our vacation/honeymoon. The views were unspeakable.

It's very windy at the top so wear your lightweight jacket and bring your camera for some amazing photo op's.

It closes early each day so plan accordingly.

“Highly recommend a stop at the Pali Lookout”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2006

If you are visiting O'ahu, and are renting a car, this a place you must stop. It's free, unforgettably beautiful, and so easy to get to from Honolulu (and Waikiki).
From H-1 take Highway 61 (which is the Pali Highway) toward Kailua, drive down 61 for a little while, and the Pali Lookout is on your right. Don't drive too fast, or you'll drive right by the turn-off.
Drive up the little road to a parking area (don't leave valuables in your car when you get out). Walk up a little path to the lookout. It's worth renting a car just to be able to get out of the city and see a better O'ahu than one is able to see sitting in a hotel on Waikiki.
When you are leaving the parking area of the Pali Lookout, you have a choice to either go back the way you came, or go the other direction out of the parking area and go toward the windward side of the island.
I also want to recommend a quick and neat way back into Honolulu. If you are on the windward side of the island, you have three good choices: (you might want to get out a map-Ha ha)
-you can go up highway 83 to the North Shore and around to H-2,
-down highway 72 around Diamond back to Honolulu (both have gorgeous, but different scenary),
-or drive on H-3 (connects back to H-1) to Honolulu. H-3 has a tunnel that cuts through the mountains, and is a quick way to get back to Honolulu if you are in the area of Kane'ohe or Kailua. The road leading up to the tunnels puts you so close to the mountains that you feel like you can reach out and grab some of the misty fog that usually surrounds them.

If you are planning a visit to O'ahu, I hope this review helps you with your travel and sightseeing. Have fun!
