Owner description: The Nuuanu Pali State Wayside is a lookout above the Pali Highway tunnels where you’re treated to a panoramic view of Oahu's Windward side with sweeping views of Kaneohe, Kaneohe Bay and Kailua. It’s also well known for strong tradewinds, forming a natural wind tunnel of sorts. It was here in 1795 that Kamehameha The Great conquered the island of Oahu in one of the bloodiest battles in Hawaiian history. Led by Kalanikupule, the defenders of Oahu were driven back up into the valley where they were trapped above the cliff. More than 400 of Kalanikupule's soldiers were driven off the edge of the cliff to their deaths 1,000 feet below.

“Great Views!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

One of the few places on the island (other than Diamond Head) that we were able to get a bird's eye view of the coast and also great views of the mountain terrain. Very lush, windy and crowded. We were probably one of the few people who bothered to pay the $3.00 self-parking fee since it's the honor system. Although most come for the views, there is also historical connection to the location (Battle of Nuʻuanu)

“Beautiful, Panoramic Views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

This lookout has absolutely beautiful views of Kaneohe and Kailua. You won't spend too much time here, but it's worth the trip! Be aware it is very windy up there, so keep your camera strapped to your wrist.

“Great place to see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

This was a stop on our tour and it was a place that looked out over miles of great views. The windiest place there is.

“Beautiful but parking was awful.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014 via mobile

Beautiful drive and view. Parking is a joke and it is WINDY. But some of the best views we've found so far. Worth the trip.

“Gorgeous views of the island....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

I have visited Pali Lookout with my family a couple different times now and the view is spectacular! Both times, the wind was blowing very strongly, which we thought was alot of fun. But be very careful when going down to the lower level! There is a long drainage pipe that is attached to the ground and if you are not looking where you are going, it can lead to injury. One of my family was taking photos and tripped over this pipe and the VERY strong wind slammed them into the concrete wall and cracked their ribs. So look out for that! But the second time we went, we knew what to look out for and had no problems. The wind can get up to 60 MPH in some spots of Pali Lookout as the wind is being channeled along the side of a mountain. It is quite an experience! And the view can't be beat!
