This is a nice way to spend a few hours, especially if you plan to make a few stops along the way. It's nice to get away from Honolulu and Waikiki and see a quieter side of Oahu.

"Circumnavigated" the island one afternoon (including a hike out to the Makapuu Lighthouse). The views are spectacular. You can visit many beaches. See a lot of the sights listed on TripAdvisor and in many of the guide books. A favorite "secret" stop was the Laie Point State Wayside park - see an arch where the crashing waves broke through the middle of a small island.

I'd STRONGLY recommend doing this on a weekday. We tried to re-visit the North Shore on a Saturday and traffic was TERRIBLE (we aborted that trip).

We used H3 and then the beautiful Kamehameha Highway (Route 83) to drive from Pearl Harbor up to the North Shore around the east coast of Oahu. The speed limit is only 25 mph, but what a gorgeous drive. You have pristine beaches on one side ot the street and majestic mountains on the other side. The highway also covers the North Shore going west past Sunset Beach, the Banzai Pipeline, and to the quaint town of Haleiwa. You will definitely enjoy this scenic ride.

Just spent a week on the North Shore and drove on the Kam Highway every day. This isn't like our California highways which isn't such a bad thing. The speed limits are quit slow...not sure why in some places but we got used to the quickly. I just worry about accidents with so much traffic (at times), impaired drivers, etc. Pretty views!

If you are not taking a guided tour of the island, this is a great way to get around the island. This is a very nice scenic drive and has many places where you can stop and get some great pictures.
