“Big Beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

Sign for access to Big Beach along the road is quite small and we drove right by it the first time and had to make a U-turn. We got there at noon on a Wednesday and there were quite a number of cars in the parking lot but we still got a spot. Parking is free. There are no concession stands except for a fish taco truck and the only washrooms were porta-potties.

The beach is definitely “Big” and didn’t seem crowded despite all the cars in the parking lot. There is also a “Little Beach” nearby which is clothing optional but we didn’t visit it.

“Peaceful in the morning”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

We visited Makena beach from Wailea for a few hours. It was a short easy ride to get there. We were there early in a morning, and had a beach to ourselves. By noon the beach was getting very busy. Use caution entering the ocean because of the strong current. We saw dolphins playing in the water and that was very special.

“Big Beach is big and beautiful ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013 via mobile

We made the lengthy drive down to Makena to check out Big Beach, which we've heard was great for kids, close to Molokini and apparently a great place to see turtles. It's free to access like all beaches but once you park, there is quite the walk down to the beach, especially if you are carrying a bunch of stuff. The beach is big and beautiful and has two life guard stations which is really nice, especially with kids. Be really careful out here and use sunscreen religiously. It can be a good 10 degrees warmer than Lahaina. The only bummer here is that the only restrooms are port- a- pottys up near the parking lot, so prepare for that, and there are no rinse stations here. Our hotel told us to bring a gallon of water to use to rinse off, and that worked fine. Fun place, very relaxing.

“Great Beach for Snorkeling”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

Just got back from great trip. Spent a week at Makena Beach & Golf Resort - Great Place to stay. Got up, had breakfast & went snorkeling on the left or southern end of the beach almost every morning. Very easy place to put on your gear & get out into the water. The reef on that side extends out about 150 feet but the water is nice and clear and dosen't get much over 20 feet deep. I saw lots of different fish and a bunch of sea turtles. Just to give you a heads up, the "paid" snorkeling trip I went on to Molakini ended up at "turtle town" which is on the south end of Makena Beach. Bring a "noodel" if you are not a confident swimmer and take an underwater camera you'll get some great shots!

“Magnificent beach, dolphins, whales, sea turtles”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

We were beach hopping in the area and visiting Makena at 8am/9am in the morning, at first sight it looks like one more beautiful beaches of Maui. However, it gets better from there! We saw a massive school of dolphins swimming not far off the coast! We almost attempted to swim to get close to the dolphins, however the lifeguards specifically announced to everyone to not chase after the dolphins. We stayed for a while dolphin watching off the beach. We then hiked up the north side of the beach and visited a nudist beach. On our way, whilst on a slightly levelled up view of the beach, we saw whales breaching a little further away! That was highlight number 2.

As the water was crystal clear, whilst trying to look for the school of dolphins we spotted sea turtles. Immediately we went for a snorkel to find the sea turtles swimming up for air. I'm from Australia, visited probably 20-30 beaches by now and have not been to a beach to see whales, dolphins, sea turtles in one beach! Magnificent!
