Before booking the skydive I did a lot of research on the place, options, reviews etc. Most of what I read was positive (I think there were only 2 out of 20 reviews that were negative; one being about the cancellation policy and then another one where the lady said she broke her ankle when landing and it was hushed up ... obviously the latter was a little nerve-wrecking, but after having done it myself, I found that the instructors were AWESOME. I dont see how this person managed to do so!)
Anyways. I will say that the night before the skydive (we - me and a family friend in her 50s - did the sunrise jump @ 6 am and it was BEAUTIFUL) I did not sleep much I was nervous and scared and excited all at once, but as I said the instructors were awesome. Everyone made us feel very comfortable, they were joking around, assured us that there was nothing to worry about, etc. I mean, these guys jump out of the plane all the time! On the day of our jump alone they had 10 more jumps afterwards.
We did have to tape our statements (about know how dangerous this is and bla bla bla) on video, but even this wasnt as terrifying as I feared it would be.
The jump itself... what can I say: It was breathtaking!!! (and not because of the 10,000 feet plunge, which the owner - Dave - explained all about gravity and the sensation of falling from such great heights etc. to us beforehand)
All along I was thinking I would be nervous about having to actually take that step out of the plane but when the moment came, my tandem partner just kinda made us both roll out of the plane and here we were just rolling around in the air it felt like. The free fall was over way too soon in my opinion :) and then we were just cruising in the air with the parachute open. AMAZING! There is no comparison to seeing the (already) beautiful island of Kauai from that perspective. I get goosebumps still when I think of how serene and pretty everything seemed!
The only negative aspect I can think of is that my instructor forgot to mention to me (before we jumped) that I should unplug my ears regularly, so I was a little distracted by the pain of the pressure in my ears and ready to land, but other than that he took great care of me on the ride up, during the jump and for the landing!
We were wearing (even early in the am) tennis shoes, shorts a t-shirt and a zipper hoodie (I am one of those people who is ALWAYS cold but it was not bad at all, again Dave was explaining the facts about the temperature to us beforehand).
Since it was the first jump for both of us, we decided to buy the video & picture package and it was worth it. The instructors had the camera set to take pix automatically every 2 seconds and we ended up with around 140-180 pictures of the entire thing. So worth it, even though its a little on the expensive side.
Finally, we were lucky to be the very first ones jumping that day, so it was a rather short wait & process time. I think we got there around 5.45am and were out again by 7.30am (including waiting on our videos and pictures to be put on DVDs). I would definitely suggest you get early appointments, especially if you have other plans that day!
Overall it was an awesome experience, the team was great, and if you're already planning on spending money on this kind of an experience, absolutely invest the few $ more and do it on Kauai! Just breathtaking
