“A little shack on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

What a great place to unwind and let the world pass you buy. We got there and decided to devote two of our 4 full days on the island to nothing but our cottage and the beach right in front of it. The other two days we did the canyon and Liko Kauai cruise both near the cottages. The water is rough but my 9, 11, 13 and 44 year olds were out in the surf everyday we were there. Outdoor Rec will rent chairs, umbrellas, and boogie boards by the day or week and they are worth it. The cabins themselves were rough, we were in the un-renovated ones but they are discounted, and you can't beat their location. The pool pictured in the reviews is of some other pool, the one on the base is not within sight of the beach and at the time we were there, not open to the cottage guests. We would definitely stay there again.

Grab a map..see where Barking Sands is located? Drier, warmer, away from the crowds and everyday life and yes, a bit of a drive to do things at other areas but with planning, is just fine. Gorgeous, amazing beach all to yourself, quiet, nice little base, hit the refresh button of your life. Great place for families and so romantic for couples. OK..still going? Hope this info (that I could not find) helps. This location offers some awesome local beaches (Sea Salt is a fantastic family beach for swimming where the locals hang out. Pretty, clean and safe).
1) Get groceries before you arrive. NEX is a large package store with basics only (note hours of operation as when you need it may not be open). Costco and Big Save (new grocery store and great selection) in Lihue is where we grabbed our stuff. Big Save in Waimea was not a good stop and Ishihara's (excellent Poke) was a small market and expensive. NEX DOES NOT CARRY ICE as of 10/13. Grab some while out and put in freezer. There are daily farmers markets too for produce.
2) The cottages facing the the ocean, although are the older cottages, are the best in my opinion. Imagine waking up to the surf and sun and not the back of a cottage. They are clean and comfortable. However; I would suggest grabbing a small supply of cleaning supplies as it is not provided and was not the cleanest when we arrived. The freezer ice trays are not ready to go when you arrive so if you have your heart set on a cold blended drink, bring your own ice. Waimea is last stop for that.
3) Bring some small candles (unscented) for outside in the evening. Not only for ambiance but to avoid keeping the deck light on which draws bugs. Pack some bug spray.
4) Pack a flashlight as the one's in the chargers in the cottages are very small and simply don't work. The kids will love flashlight tag at night and you will love having one for walks etc..
5) The outdoor BBQ's are awesome so be sure to grab charcoal and fluid. You won't want to turn the oven on as we were there in October and it was hot (rooms have AC thank goodness).
6) The Adventure Center is an excellent source of info and supplies. We rented ice chest, beach chairs, umbrellas, cooler, snorkeling stuff for a week for $35! Note: Check equipment before taking out as some is well worn. Juliet was super helpful at the desk for trips etc..IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have your heart set on an adventure, BOOK AHEAD OF TIME so you won't be disappointed.
7)Take time to explore the base. There is a pool for the kids, Shenanigans is a great place to eat (check hours) and there is the coolest old Japanese cemetery out by the hangers (used to be a town called Mana), that is rich in history. Very pretty little base and so quiet (well, we did have a C1-40 lift off above our heads but that was really cool).
8) Last thing..I had read some reviews about noisy birds and I simply did not hear them and we were on the very end right next to the tree's and bushes. Mind you, they are there as at night you hear the sound like a baby crying but it was not so loud it kept me awake as when you are sleeping, your windows are closed with a very quiet and efficient AC unit running.
9) Happy to answer questions! Shoot me an email with Barking Sands in the subject line (mommy2twolabs@aol.com). I know it's hard to find info and I will tell you why; this is a Navy jewel!

We invited another couple, who is not in the military, to stay with us in Kauai. We had a great time. We stayed in one of the unrenovated cottages (the a/c controllers are broken and the bathroom looks well-worn), but it was amazing anyway. Yes, the kitchen and bath need renovation, but the furnishings are very nice and we could hear the ocean and the Nenes at night through the open windows. Definately eat dinner at Shenanigans, which is close, has good food, and is a great facility. I can't wait to return. Mahalo to the staff, who were wonderful.

Room Tip: I would choose the unrenovated cottages closer to the beach.

If you are in the military this is a place you must take advantage of as it is absolutely amazing. We stayed for six nights at a three bedroom cottage. Even though we kind of knew what to expect, the amenities in the cottage went beyond our expectations. The cottage had a very nice lanai with two tables and four chairs that you could relax on and enjoy the view. Cable TV and Wi-Fi were available as well as a TV with a DVD/VCR combo. A Red Box vending machine was located at the NEX. There were more than enough coffee cups, glasses, plates, knives, forks, spoons, grilling utensils, bowls, pots and pans that it seemed like home. Microwave, coffee machine with two days complimentary 8 cup packaged coffee, toaster, stove and oven were also available. Ironing board and iron along with hair dryers in the bathroom was an added bonus. Lotion, shampoo, conditioner and bath soap in "hotel size" was provided. The cottage had almost everything. Every morning I had a gorgeous view of the beach and the island of Ni'ihau. We walked along the beach every morning and sometimes we had the beach to ourselves. Gorgeous, gorgeous place to relax. Swimming was possible once you got past the shore breaks. Straight out from the west side cottages was where I swam and there were no rip tides or under tows noticed. It can get rough for the little ones. On Friday - Sunday the play movies at an outdoor movie theater. Way cool!!! You have to experience it to appreciate it.

We recently stayed here for 8 dreamy nights! The cottage is in rough shape, more like a roomy shack, but who cares since it is a BEACH shack and very affordable! I would be happy to move in here forever, and there was a strong urge not to go anywhere. We just wanted to hang out here and read. The isolated beach location is the key selling point to this place, and the cottage has all the basics. The cottage was very clean except for the annoying ants that hung out in the sink drains. Apparently they can't spray them due to some Hazmat policy, but I was able to buy some spray at the NEX and it helped a little. The only other negative to this place was some loud annoying beach birds that have taken up nesting under the cottages and make eerie wooing and baby crying like sounds intermittently throughout the night. Ear plugs definitely came in handy. We rented beach chairs, snorkel equipment, and a boogie board from the MWR office for the week. There is also a grill outside the cottage we cooked our fresh fish on. The sunsets are phenomenal!
I will definitely return, that is if I am lucky enough to get a reservation!

This is on a military base so either you need a military ID, or someone with one to babysit you at all times. About two dozen great little two bedroom, one bath cottages located tucked in the trees about a 30-second sprint away from the ocean. Private beach well patrolled by security. Swimming not recommended. Fishing IS recommended. Complete with kitchen, washer and dryer, ultra hot solar shower (endless hot water), cable TV, deck, outside shower, outside BBQ, and parking for two. BX and a great Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) facility a short drive away. Secluded and dry side of island. Close to Kekaha, Polihale State Park, and Waimea Canyon Drive.

Room Tip: Cabins on the opposite side of the road from the beach on south end of the road are newest. And they...

We come here several times a year. I would definitely move if I could. The cottages are totally ready to move into. Full kitchen. Washer and Dryer. Front porch with a view of the ocean. Literally next to the ocean! What more would you want. It is at the far end of the island but it is totally worth it. Peace. Quiet. No crowds on the beach (even with large numbers of people and children on the beach....there is more than enough room for all).

Room Tip: All the cottages have a view of the ocean. We have stayed in both front and back rows. We have als...
