“Beautiful drive!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013 via mobile

What a beautiful, scenic drive. My husband and I were on this road on a clear, sunny day and the view was gorgeous. Everything was so lush and green and we could see Maui so clearly! We really enjoyed this drive.

“It's Beautiful, But Dangerous If You Bike It”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

The road between Waimea and Hawi, with it's high elevation views of the Pacific, the coast line, rolling green pastures, and Maui in the distance, as well as fantastic views of the volcanoes Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa (both can be snow-capped in the winter), and Hualalai is indeed extremely beautiful and "camera-worthy". At about 20 miles length over a windy, paved two lane highway lined in places by "iron wood trees" (casuarina equistifolia) it's a wonderful drive, best taken a modest pace. HOWEVER, be aware that the local folk use the road to travel between Waimea and Hawi and they do not appreciate "slow poke" tourists, so be courteous and pull to the side so they can get to work/school/Star Bucks on time. Another important consideration: the shoulders on the road are non-existent in places, so BIKERS BEWARE, as the cars do come flying around the corners. If you feel you need to make a statement for "biker's rights" by peddling up the middle of the road, you may inadvertently find yourself making said statement from the hood of some rancher's pick-up truck.

“Kewl drive!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

We drove on this road to Kapa'au from Kohala Coast and what a scenery we saw!

Unlike Highway 19, you would not drive pass hardened lava rock. Instead, you'll feast your sight upon beautiful rolling green hills one after another.

At one point, you'll drive pass a desert range where you'll see some cactus trees, several private horse ranches, and road lined by lush vegetation. On a clear day, you'll be able to see at least 3-4 different mountain ranges: Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, and Mauna Loa. If you look to the West, you'll see the Kohala Coast and also the Kawaihae Harbor lined by Pacific ocean.
There's a scenic point that you could stop and take in the vista. :-)

If you're not rushing to your destination, do savor the drive on this road.

“Beautiful drive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2012

The "mountain road" connecting Waimea to the North Kohala towns is a beautiful drive, but not one to take in a hurry. Parts are lined with majestic Norfolk Pines; other sections give you magnificent views over the hillside to the seaside far below. It can be windy or even rainy, but it can also be sparkling sunshine. It's enjoyable either way and a sure way to experience a part of Hawaii different from the rest.

“Beautiful drive from Waimea north to the Hawi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2012

Beautiful drive along the Kohala section - lots of lush farmland, beautiful views, nice drive. In Hawi, check out the Mo'okini Heiau in the Kohala Historical Sites State Monument (~1 mile past the Upolu airport - the dirt road was dry and we had no problem getting out to it in our 2WD rental). Beautiful / stark landscape, a fitting landscape for the thousands of human sacrifices here. http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=10746507111704230325
