“Beautiful, well maintained, interesting course”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

This track doesn't get the attention of its bigger brother at the Mauna Kea or the courses at the Mauna Lani, but it is a much better value and a heck of a lot of fun. The staff were very professional and friendly. It has a small driving range with free balls, a practice bunker and chipping area and putting green all of which were very nice. We began our round at 12:40 with no one ahead or behind us and completed a leisurely round in 4 hours under the hot Hawaii sun. The course wends up and down a long hillside between the furrows of lava. It's obvious a great amount of thought was given to the layout and to disturbing as little of the natural environment as possible. The holes tend to flow with the natural gradients of the land. There are many swales and a number of surprises to keep it interesting. Each hole is separated from the others so at times it feels as though you're the only ones out there. Each hole is different. Many have gorgeous, if distant, views of the ocean. Most fairways have generous landing areas narrowing towards the greens. The fairways were in excellent condition. The greens were lightning fast and true even though they'd recently been sanded. The first nine found many of our putts past and short of the hole as we alternated between aggressive and tentative trying to gauge the speed. If you keep your ball in the short grass or first cut of rough, you'll probably have a great time. Find yourself in the foot-long fescue (?) and it'll be a long day. This is a very well designed, challenging yet fair, beautiful, interesting, and very well maintained course for all levels of golfers.

“Wind and more wind”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

We were staying at the Sheraton in the Kona area and had this place pre booked for the Saturday.......WOW - when we got to the area the weather was totally different than the area we were staying at.........it was SUPER WINDY - I cannot even begin to explain.
Anyway there still were a few people getting on the course - she did ask us if we wanted to re-book but it would not fit our schedule so we decided to give it a go............and a go it was indeed !
The course looked really nice and wish we could have enjoyed it in different weather - it was amazing the difference as we played the Kona Course several times and it was just beautiful but it is like you cross a line on the Kohola Coast and boom it becomes windy etc., - apparently this happens quite a bit ??
The ball would barely stay on the T and there were times where you would easily lose your balance standing still it was so windy.
We got through the course but threw away the score card after about 4 holes realizing it meant nothing! So that was our experience at the Hapuna Golf Course.
I did find a common factor throughout the island though is that everything closes up so early or is not even open at all..........when we were done our round of golf we asked where the restaurant was so we could maybe enjoy a beer and a bite to eat..........she said they have no such place as it closed up about 2 - 3 years ago.??????

“Tough Course in the Wind!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2012

The Hapuna Golf Course is one tough course in high winds, and the day we played, the course really showed its teeth. You have to hit it straight here, the long fescue grass along the sides of the fairways is penal, you would never find a ball in there.

The course is very nice, with several nice Ocean Holes, but keep it straight, especuially on the front nine, where the long grass is more prevalent and the holes are into the wind.

All in all, a very nice course as the little sister to Mauna Kea,

“Great layout and fun to play”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2012

We played in constant 30mph winds a week after they punched the greens (we were warned) and we still loved the course. It's a very fun track with great views from every hole and a few holes have spectacular views. It is tight, but I didn't think it was penal in nature, even in the near-ridiculous winds.

Customer service was outstanding and they couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. The conditions, other than the aerated greens, were wonderful. I imagine that pace of play could be an issue during the busy season because I've heard that Hapuna gets more wind than other courses and it is tough. It beat me up because I was having a bad day but my wife shot one of her best rounds ever, so it is fair.

“Customer service was awesome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2012 via mobile

My wife and I came here just to use the practice facility. We had planned to play golf later in the week but hadn't decided where yet. The customer service here was so great that I made a tee time for the next day before I left. Lisa and Rob treated us like royalty. The course was similar to others on the island with very scenic holes. I would rate the challenge factor as moderate. I played at 1:00 to take advantage of the $75 twilight rate. There were only a few others on the course and we finished in three and a half hours. So if you want to play later you can still finish before six (when they close). I found the course to be a good value with emphasis on the customer service from Rob and Lisa.
