“Black sand paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2014

We hiked down to this beautiful natural beach from the cliff top parking area. It took us about a half hour down and longer to get up due to the steepness and rough trail. Take sturdy shoes and hiking sticks with drinking water. We changed into swim suits Au naturel at the beach encircled in big towels. Beautiful swim but surf is strong and beach a bit Stoney in places. Beach drops off as you enter but rises again to a shallower sand bar. No services when down below and no lifeguards. Parking at the top is limited along the roadway. Views of valley, verdant cliffs and off shore island rocks are spectacular. Highly recommended for the adventurous and fit traveller!

“Beautiful view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

This look out was worth the view.. However, if that is all you are going to do is look from the view point don't bother with the long drive. You must get out and hike down to the beach that is what makes this great. I do feel sorry for the home owners at the end of the road as every one parks in front of their house... the trail has been dismantlement a little by earth quakes and rain washouts so its not easy and I wouldn't try it in flip flops ..A young person could do the hike easily .. there are discrepancies on the length of the trail and the difficulty of the trail but don't let that stop you. If however, you have a bad back or bad knees or a bad heart please don't take the trail.

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

Awesome views and if you have the strength walk down to the beach. Actually it is a hike back up. On the valley floor there is a WW2 tank stuck from time past. The water is dangerous with strong currents. The view is absolutely breathtaking.

“Adventurous Hike, Black Sand”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2014

The view is what you see on posters and flyers of green cliffs with black sand beach in Hawaii. It is breathtaking. This is the second time we've come here. We enjoy the strenuous, rocky hike to the bottom (and back up!) and strolling along the black sand beach, and the fresh water river back to another beautiful valley view. Black sand feels different. If you can do the hike, do it. The sand is softer, if that's possible! than white sand. Make sure you have good hiking/walking shoes: flip flops might slide or you could cut your feet on the rocky paths. It is a steep climb.
Parking is available, but some spots are easier than others.
Make sure you bring a camera and drinking water.

“Time and Distance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013

The view....awesome. Be sure to come prepared (water and good hiking shoes). It's a day trip....It's not a drive by scenic overlook and is made more enjoyable by the hike to the beach, but....First, if you have a vehicle bigger than a compact....good luck turning around. If you park on the side of the road, watch out....you'll bottom the car out.....bottom-line....it's not a car friendly place....and second, if you're out of shape and haven't hiked a steep hillside....enjoy the view from road....
