“Great Food, Not So Great Service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2011

Utage is a typical example of Japanese cuisine: sushi, fried rice, etc. The food is very good and presented well. However, each visit to Utage has really ended up with having a neglectful or absent-minded server. Definitely go for the food and atmosphere, but to not expect your patience to be at ease.

“been good for a while now”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2010

Seems to be a fairly stable place in that the quality has been maintained since they opened years ago. We had a fine meal there tonight. Rhonda had the tempura and I had the Kentucky Sampler.

“The Best Sushi in Athens!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2010

My husband goes to Utage regularly for sushi. Not being a sushi fan myself, I always get their teriyaki when we go (very good). Even though it is more expensive than many of the other sushi restaurants in town it is well worth it. The food is beautifully presented, the waitstaff is very attentive, and it has a nice atmosphere.

“Not good. Avergae at best. Surprised to see so many + reviews???”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2009

Just coming from what was expected to be a nice dinner at a Japanese restaurant in Athens, GA. After Kinyobee in Lawrenceville, GA and Great Wall in Marietta, GA, this restaurant's food can't be given more than 3 stars. To rate only based on atmosphere defeats the purpose as food is the main focus of this establishment. Ordered Chirashi, Sushi Take, Seaweed salad, House salad, Miso Soup and Japanese beer, as well as a cocktail... Overall, fish was cut so thick, it was unbelievably difficult to chew or swallow. Japanese food is about fish, but not 2/3 fish and 1/3 rice. Rice was not sticky enough, so that when you use two to three drops of soy sauce, to not fall apart. Cocktail had so much alcohol/liquor and flavors, my taste buds threatened to explode (and I drink cocktails and whiskey/vodka/gin/tequila quite often). Every self-respecting food -serving establishment would offer water, not make you ask for it...
A couple, just behind our table was leaving quietly after not liking the food to the point of not even being willing to take even one of the four ordered food items as take out (they only tasted it, plates were 90% full, and they left prematurely).
If anyone wants to taste real Japanese food, please see the locations mentioned earlier in the review. They won't disappoint you. Sushi will be your favorite food for life....Great Wall has the best atmosphere, yet unpretentious. Kinyobee has the best food quality hands down. I've been to several other Japanese food restaurants, all very highly rated, yet food quality was not as good as this place's, and not as bad as to make me write a review on the same day I visited it.
Wake up people, it is not about flame-throwing, or show of some sort, or serene environments that lure us into spending money and regretting it later. Japanese food should be pleasing to the eye, but we are not talking about beautiful food as a concept...we are talking tasteful, mouth-watering combination of ingredients that make you addicted...Taste-full, not taste-less!

Oh, and I forgot...we never got the two desserts that were supposed to come with every dinner entree....NOT REGRETTING IT, though....
