“Beautiful mountain retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2014

This hotel is one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed in my life. It is a different kind of beautiful, because of the indoor/outdoor living, stunning views of the mountains, and Nina (residential dog-I swear she is half human)! The architecture of this hotel is stunning and the lush greenery makes it hard to ever want to leave your hammock and go explore elsewhere. The owner of the hotel is very nice, knowledgeable and although I was with my Spanish speaking friend, it was comforting to have a host that spoke English fluently (was able to be part of all the conversations!) The rooms were beautiful and had their own private entrances complete with hammocks and outdoor lighting. There is nothing to really see "in town" of La Cieba so staying up in the mountains will make your trip worth while.

I am giving four stars for 2 reasons. While the beauty of this place would not be complete without its location, it is also something we felt was not really emphasized enough to us when booking. This hotel is located very high in the mountains, along a dirt road. Pair this with the majority of vehicles that will be taking you directly to the villas, and it makes for a very scary experience. A regular taxi is not going to make it up the driveway. Luckily the owner of the hotel has a newer car with proper 4x4 axle, but nonetheless, it was scary and something we were not expecting. Try to arrive during the day and definitely communicate with the owner when you will be arriving. He will guide you and make sure you have proper transportation. The location of this was within distance from where tours commence as well so you don't need to make extra time for getting to these tours; its right down the way! As far as reason number 2, this family-owned hotel will cook for you but there is no restaurant where you can order food when you want. In fact, there is really not that much around. We were able to walk to a baleada stand, but they weren't really that good. Apparently there is another restaurant connected to another b+b, but we did not make it there.

Overall beautiful place, beautiful experience, and I would certainly come back here (hopefully with better weather). 100% recommend La Villa de Soledad!

Thank you for sharing your experience with other travelers! I can understand your initial concern arriving at La Villa de Soledad. You did arrive late, and yes the road from town is dark and lonely... We usually like to pick our guests up personally in town and transfer them ourselves to our B&B, however Lourdes had already set up the transfer from San Pedro Sula and her driver did not really know the Cangrejal River area that well. The good news is that even though the road is dark and lonely it is very safe! I am pleased that after that initial concern you fully enjoyed your stay with us and the food that we cooked for you! Part of the pleasure of having a business like ours is meeting travelers like you! I will send your regards to Nina, our dog, she is a quite a character and yes, sometimes she really is almost human!

Our stay at La Villa de Soledad exceeded our expectations. Here you will be surrounded by beauty, tranquility, and top notch hospitality. After an action packed week on the islands, we could not have imagined a more perfect place to wind down toward the end of our time in Honduras. It's all too inviting to simply enjoy walking around the property, taking in the surroundings of lush plants and birds to see, or read or nap in a hammock. If you want more action, white water rafting opportunities are very close by (we used Omega Tours), and the Visitor's Center and bridge entry into Parque National Pico Bonito is a short walk away and offers incredible views, hiking, and birding not to be missed. La Villa de Soledad is ideally located. Soledad is an amazing cook, and John is very helpful and knowledgeable about not only the La Ceiba/Pico Bonito area, but Honduras in general. Their whole family is warm and hospitable and make you feel right at home. The rooms are beautifully appointed, spacious, and authentic. You will not be disappointed at La Villa de Soledad!

Dear Cassandra:
IT was a pleasure having you and Matt stay with us! Really happy that Matt enjoyed his birthday hike to the El Bejuco waterfall, hopefully it will be a memorable experience that you both will cherish over the years! Soledad enjoys cooking for our guests, who inevitably end up being our friends, and we try our best to make you feel the very best of Honduran hospitality. Thank you for trusting your instincts and visiting Honduras. Hope your overall experience in Honduras was outstanding! Most of all, thank you for helping us get the word out about La Villa de Soledad!

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Villa de Soledad. We arrived from Roatan, where the owner, John, picked us up from the ferry then happily drove us for a couple errands before heading up the canyon to the house. Upon arrival, we were awed by the beauty of the place. It's a Spanish-colonial style house on a hill with wonderful views and impeccable grounds. Our room was perfect - large, well appointed, clean, and comfortable. French doors open to the lawn, with hammocks beckoning us to take a mid-day nap. The toucans apparently love the place too, so as bird lovers we loved watching these beautiful creatures try to steal John and Soledad's papaya fruits off the tree.
In terms of location, the place is great - you have lots of privacy there up on the hill, but can also walk to Omega resort/tours down the road if you're interested in sitting at a bar or eating "out."
The food here is outstanding. During our 3 night stay we had two dinners (not included in nightly price) that were fantastic (cooked by Soledad herself). The breakfasts are wonderful - lots of fruit with eggs, beans, etc.
Both John and Soledad were incredibly hospitable during our stay. We stayed up late one night talking with John and learning much about Honduras and its people. We felt like guests here, not customers. In talking with staff and guides from nearby places, it's clear that John and Soledad are highly regarded and respected there. To us, it was obvious why. We enjoyed our stay and highly recommend staying there!

Thank you Matt!

It was a pleasure having you and Cassandra with us for three nights. We were especially happy that you chose our place to spend your birthday at! Really happy you enjoyed the hike up to El Bejuco Waterfalls and the rafting trip with Omega Tours. Soledad is always flattered when our guests talk about her food! She puts her heart into it and is really happy when our guests appreciate it!
I for one love to meet interesting people from around the world and have an opportunity to chat with them and learn from their experiences, so I want to thank you for taking some time so chat during that evening that we did so! Glad that you two are back home safe and sound! I bet your pets where happy to see you two back! Hasta la proxima!

Absolutely one of my best hotel stays! It feels like i am a guest in my close friends' home. The owner, John, and the rest of his family members are so warm and accommodating. John aranged/coordinated with the tour agencies all our activities during our 3day/3night stay. Everything went well, from our river rafting, boating, snorkeling at Cayos Cochinos and up to our mineral hot spring bath. I wish i could have stayed at least a week so i can enjoy other activities like trekking and horse riding. Nevertheless, my vacation to Honduras was well worth spent. Awesome! Despite the tiring adeventures we had, i was able to relax with the very cozy and comfortable feel of our hotel room. I am so thankful i found this hotel, and not to mention the deliciously home-cooked meals prepared by John's wife, Soledad. They are perfect! When i go back to Honduras, i wouldn't stay anywhere else!

Hello Neil!
Soledad and I are really happy you enjoyed yourself! We try to make out guests feel at home,so I am happy you felt like you where at your friends home. That is precisely the idea! Glad that you enjoyed both Cayos Cochinos and the Cangrejal River rafting, these are without doubt the most popular activities when around La Ceiba, however there is also great hiking in the rain forest, good kayaking in the mangrove canals along the coastal lagoons and horse back riding, so hopefully you will be back for some more adventure! Thanks for helping spread the word about La Villa de Soledad!

I will try and rate my stay here as best as I can. John and Soledad were the perfect hosts picking us up from the airport and arranging all the trips we decided to do. Soledad is a great cook and we enjoyed the steak and chicken dinners along with some great company and some great stories. The rooms were better than most hotels and were prepared daily with fresh towels waiting on us when we returned from the days activities. As this was only a short stay (long weekend) we never got to do everything we planned so looks like I will just have to come back to finish off the tick boxes. Short and sweet. AMAZING!!

The most beautiful place in Honduras and truly the best. The room is clean, the family is very approachable and they did their best to make us welcome. The ambience is out of this world. I would recommend this place to stay and the food was fantastic. From breakfast to dinner. To know that you can have at least two great meals in a day takes a lot of pressure off the holiday. John and Soledad, thank you for sharing with us your home and we will be back if not April, then soon. All I would like to add is keep doing what you are doing. FANTASTIC!!!!.

We visited La Villa de Soledad in December when we took a break from our holiday in Roatan to go rafting on the Rio Cangrejal. Following a short flight over to the mainland, we were greeted by John at the tiny airport in La Ceiba. A brief half hour drive from the airport to the villa transported us to paradise. It was an honor to stay as a guest of John, and Soledad (and little Nina too) in their magnificent home. We arrived at lunch time, and Soledad had a delicious lunch of chicken and rice prepared for us. We then took the afternoon to follow the sound of the rushing waters of the Rio Cangrejal located below the house. From there, we made the short walk down the road to the suspension bridge and crossed the river into Pico Bonito park for a hike to the waterfall.

Our room was beautiful and very spacious (room 3 is the corner room), but the hammocks along the outdoor living room were THE place to be! Following a peaceful night's rest with the sounds of the rain forest surrounding us, Soledad prepared us breakfast that was served in the outdoor dining room where we were fortunate to spot a Toucan! John then drove us down the road to Omega lodge where he had arranged a white water rafting trip for us. I truly appreciated John's knowledge of all there is wonderful about Honduras....including his recommendation to use Omega for our rafting trip (it was an amazing experience!!). We were dropped off on the road near the villa after rafting so that John could get us to the airport for an early flight back to Roatan. My only complaint is that I did not have enough time to enjoy the villa. I look forward to our next visit to La Villa de Soledad. We will stay for at least two nights next time!!

Room Tip: Room 3 is a large beautiful corner room
