“Fabulous retreat in the Honduran rain forest.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2012

Great accommodations, food, service and attention from the staff and owner, Richard. Beautiful rain and cloud forest, river, waterfalls, flora and fauna galore. Many activities available, or kick back and relax. Naturalists' nirvana.

As the previous reviewers have already said, Villas Pico Bonito is a gorgeous place and fully deserves the highest possible rating on here.

The villas are beautifully furnished (you really have everything you could possibly need), the infinity pool is amazing, the gardens are incredible and Richard, the owner, is a wonderful host. Not to forget Ace and Lucy, his two loveable dogs!

The view to the rainforest and the river Cangrejal is stunning - we felt ourselves just admiring the scenery for hours.
We were here for part of our honeymoon and couldn't have chosen a more romantic place.

Richard helped us book a kayak trip and called us a taxi and the end of our stay, which we really appreciated. He also came to the bar every night to chat to his guests and make sure everyone was ok, which was lovely.

The food and drinks at Villas Pico Bonito were tasty and extremely good value (although we did probably indulge in a few too many cocktails and were slightly embarrassed at our cocktail bill!!).

If we ever come back to Honduras, we will make sure to stay at Villas Pico Bonito.

PS: If you decide to hike to the waterfall, be prepared for some pretty slippery climbs over rocks! Wear decent footwear, not sandals, like me...

Villas Pico Bonito is probably the most unique place I've ever stayed. While a drive up the muddy road to the lodge on arrival on a dark rainy night was daunting, morning broke to reveal the most incredible location, along the banks of the Rio Cangrejal.

Richard the owner and his team, including Wildar, Lettie, Anna and Emma provided the most extraordinary hospitality, including a fun night with fellow guests at the well-named Hidden Paradise Bar and Grill.

The barbecued food was delicious and healthy, as were the baleadas for breakfast. There's also a fully-equipped kitchen in each lodge if you wish to cook yourself.

The pool is magnificent and great to cool down after a hike, with great views of the river and waterfall.

The value in the lodges is exceptional. Some operators nearby offer free accommodation with rafting trips, but by all accounts the standards are basic. When you consider lodges start at $65 at Villas Pico Bonito, it's a very low rate for real quality accommodation.

I did a rafting trip and a short hiking trail, with again Richard and team providing assistance in booking.

There's no doubt that this region of Honduras is seeing lower tourist numbers because of problems elsewhere in the country, but rest assured, more than being safe, it is also a warm and welcoming environment, with a visit to the supermarket yielding three separate offers of assistance from complete strangers.

Thoroughly recommended.

The owner, Richard has created a wonderland with rock waterfalls and beautiful blooming flower gardens. He was very friendly and responded to our requests rapidly. The Bejuco lodge was perfect and we were able to use the kitchen for every meal. We had dinner at the bar once and the meal was delicious. The staff are friendly and competent. We would love to return and spend more time exploring the area. Jorge of La Moskitia Eco-adventuras was quite the character and his staff were skilled at getting us down the river with 4+ rapids. Lots of fun! The solitude and relaxation that my husband and I experienced is a very pleasant memory of our trip. The birdwatching on the property was excellent! Wow, just Wow! Bottled water is supplied and there is an umbrella for your use. There is also flashlights to use in the evening to get to and from the bar/restaurant. Richard has thought of everything!

Room Tip: We liked the Bejuco Lodge overlooking the river and with a view of the waterfall across the gorge.

It was so relaxing and comfortable. The view off the balcony of the waterfall was incredible. The food was great and Richard (the owner) was one of the nicest people you will ever meet. So you to just walk along and enjoy the beautiful flowers and scenery. One of the nicest places I have ever stayed.

Room Tip: They are all nice

My husband and I enjoyed such a peaceful retreat here.
The staff was WONDERFUL!!
The lodge we stayed in (Del Rio) was clean, comfortable, private and had lovely views and plenty of space.
The food and beverages in the restaurant/bar were very good.
Sitting by the infinty pool watching the birds, tropical flowers, waterfall and rio congrejal while
sipping cold beers and eating grilled fish was amazing.
We hope to return again!

We spent a couple of nights here recently, along with two other families. The setting is very beautiful, and it's one of the few spots in the Pico Bonito area that is right on the river. The Bejuco and Del Rio cabins are tastefully decorated and comfortable. Note, you wouldn't want adults sleeping on the fold out couches in these units, they are fine for kids, but not terribly comfortable under the weight of an adult. The Casita cabin is sort of dated and more simply decorated, but a very good value for a 2 br unit. The swimming pool is lovely, an infinity pool that looks out over the river, and it was kept nice and clean.

Given all the glowing reviews on TA, I was expecting more in terms of service and details. We were asked to place breakfast orders the night before so the kitchen could "plan", were told that breakfast couldn't be served before 8:30 on Sunday morning because that's when the cook arrived, but then one person in our party had to wait ONE HOUR on Sunday morning for his pancakes, which were just from a mix in a box anyway, couldn't anyone else on the property have manage to do that, and more quickly? Piña coladas ordered before dinner took more than half an hour to be served, as Ana abandoned preparing them in order to charge us the balance on our rooms (why couldn't she simply have finished fixing the drinks first?) Some reviews rave about the food, but we were definitely underwhelmed by it. It was fine, but nothing special.

Also, having a kitchen in the unit was nice, but using it was a little tricky, as there were no rags, paper towels, a broom or a mop, so cleaning up wasn't easy, but absolutely imperative as this is the jungle and you'll get a swarm of ants in a minute if you don't clean up right away. Garbage wasn't taken out of the room daily, and we were informed that we should have left it outside the room to be collected - how should we have known, and how would we get a new plastic bag for the garbage bin? Towels were not changed either - since we were only there two nights it was okay, but we wouldn't have been able to take another day without a change. We were a party of four, but only given two towels for the pool (again, I had brought two with me, so it was okay, just another example of the little details that were missing...)

We took advantage of their discount prices in Oct and Nov (50% off!) so it was a very good value and we were definitely happy about our stay overall. But if we had been paying full price we would have felt a bit more frustrated by the details and service that were missing. If they put a little more effort into service, it will be a fantastic place, as the setting is really unbeatable.

Room Tip: Mi Casita is close to the main road and more simply decorated - best for those on a budget. Those w...

tripletango, General Manager at Villas Pico Bonito, responded to this review, October 17, 2011
Thanks for the review. We learn so much from our guests.

Just a couple of notes of what to expect when you stay with us. We are not a hotel, we make no pretense at being anything other than a vacation rental eco resort. We have a small staff and they all work very hard. Sometimes they are a little overwhelmed that is true. However their primary goal is making sure we respond to the requests of our guests.

That said, we have to receive requests from guests if service is required. In every Lodge is a welcome note outlining how we work. It is also in the pages section of the blog.

"The Lodge you have chosen is now your home and we respect your privacy.
We will maintain your home as and when you request it.
If you need anything, just drop off a note at the office describing what you need.
FYI our cleaning staff are available from 7.30 am until 4.00 pm
We provide coffee, ice and as much bottled water as you need for your lodge."

Regarding breakfast, yes we do ask that you tell us when you would like your breakfast and what you would like to eat because the first thing Edda does after she arrives is look to see who wants what. Many times guests have brought their own food and there is no need for breakfast to be made at all. If no notes she is off to clean. That creates a wait if someone decides to eat breakfast. No problem but be prepared for a little wait. My chef and bar person do not come on line until around 11 am.

We have found that many of our guests take advantage of the kitchen and buy their food and supplies down town before coming to the Lodge. We are the only resort on the River that offers self catered Lodges and for many, that is the beauty of Villas Pico Bonito.

What we have decided to do is carry a limited inventory of consumables at the resort and if things like paper towels are requested we will have them in stock.

Regarding the comfort level. There is a beautiful king bed in the Bejuco and a Queen in the Del Rio. However if you have four adults the sleeper sofa can be uncomfortable for larger persons and are more suitable for kids as pointed out by our reviewer. The Casita is a basic little home with all modern conveniences. I believe this trip 4 people stayed there for less than $13 each per night. It has 2 queens in separate rooms

A better choice for a group such as this would be the Cangrejal River Lodge. It has 3 queens, a double bunk and 2 oversized singles in 3 bedrooms. Unfortunately it was not available.

Regarding the rubbish, please let us help you and place the bag outside your Lodge as we, unless requested, will not enter your home.

Regarding food, we have the one of the best 8 oz hamburger in Honduras! The chicken sandwich is pretty good too! The menu is much more diversified, if not satisfied, you just have to choose something more interesting. Just one more little thing. We restrict the public areas from the use of personal provisions and drinks. We reserve the right to sell food and drinks in those areas which include the bar and pool. If you want to bring your special wine to dinner, a fair corkage fee will be charged.

My thanks again for giving me a venue to better present what to expect when visiting Villas Pico Bonito. We really appreciate that you chose to come in the first place and if you wish to visit again we promise that we will try to do better.

Richard
