“Lovely visit and delicious bread!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

We spent a couple wonderful days in Copan Ruinas enjoying the hospitality from Rodger and his staff. The Hacienda is beautifully built with an eye to detail and interesting architecture and decoration. The rooms are simple (no tv..but we didn't miss it), clean and very comfortable. Lots of nice touches like flowers and a carafe of drinking water. We were even spoiled by some delicious fresh baked bread and almond cake....and the breakfasts were ample and tasty as well. The best coffee we had in all of Honduras! We definitely felt like treasured guests rather than just another couple passing through. Rodger is a welcoming host and was quite generous with picking us up at the Hedman Alas bus station and offering us rides around town.

The hotel is located outside of the downtown area. Not the place to be if you need to be in the middle of everything. If you like a little walk, the location has its benefits (or it's very easy and inexpensive to take a taxi). Felt like we were coming "home" rather than just ducking into our in town hotel. Lots of bird noises in the morning (and a few dog barks, but that just made us think of our own home) is another plus for the location..less traffic noise as well.

And as mentioned before, feels good that we added just a bit to the good deeds being done by the charity which runs the hotel.

Great service, more than personalized! Rodger just makes you feel at home inmediately! The rooms are cozy and clean, nicely decorated. We wanted a different stay in Copan and we got that and more: waking up to the birds singing and surrounded by nature. La Hacienda is not far from downtown, yet far enough to stay away from its noise.Breakfast is better than at home, and everyone makes you feel at home. Wifi made my 14 year nephew stay in touch with everyone, while we enjoyed the peaceful starry nights. The best part is that you are also helping the clinic by staying here. Copan Ruins has lots of smaller villages and are not as developed as you might think. Access to a proper doctor is a luxury to locals, but not anymore with the clinic services run by Rodger and his staff. We are definately coming back with more time to enjoy la Hacienda and Rodger´s singing !!! Thank you for a lovely long weekend!!

Room Tip: All rooms we saw are as nice as ours,( see pictures attached). Rooms have fans, but no need to use t...

After getting terribly lost while driving to Copan from San Salvador my friend and I were exhausted. We showed up on the doorstep of Hacienda la Esperanza and somehow Roger (the owner) managed to turn our horrible trip into a wonderful one. He immediately gave us a room and drove us to a really awesome German restaurant for sausages and beer. The company was fabulous and the breakfast the next morning was great! Hacienda la Esperanza is a beautiful place and you can leave with a smile knowing you're supporting a good cause.

This B&B is wonderful. After staying in several diferent places in Copan I can say this is the best. The place is beautiful, made with great taste, all your needs are meet. We stay there for a couple of days with kids and they enjoy it a lot, with lots of space to run around. The owner Roger is a great host and person, always trying to help and a good musician ( a plus). The personal is really welcoming and polite. Is like your home away from home. Do not doubt to stay here, you would not regret it.

This place is really a gem in Copan. It is located in a quiet part of the outskirts of town but the caretakers came to meet us off the bus from Lake Atitlan. We were travelling with 2 children ages 5 and 9 and they went out of their way to be helpful. We got a made to order breakfast each morning, a ride into town when they were going, a trip up to a local village(free), and all our dollars go to the clinic in a (separate but close), compound to provide low cost health care to the local population mostly or anyone who shows up! It was really close to the ruins also and we absolutely loved the tranquility of the grounds. All the trees and grass and the stable with the horses.Everyone was so friendly, nothing was too much trouble and the owner Rodger was a blast to hang out with! We can recommend this place with no hesitation! Go,go,go, you won't regret it!

The first thing I noticed about Hacienda la Esperanza was the friendly atmosphere. The owner, Roger is very helpful and genuinely passionate about making his guests as comfortable as possible. The lovely women who did the cooking were very avid about suiting our food preferences (vegetarians are welcomed!), and were very creative with our meals. Marco Toullio, was also a very funny, awesome man there, who gave a lot of guidance around the town and pretty much anywhere else we wanted to go!The rooms were very neatly, and simply dressed, and the bathrooms were spacious and VERY clean. The place being gated and monitored with camera made me feel pretty safe, not to mention the fact that it is located in the less busy area of Copan. If you are not a lover of NATURE, or dogs however, this is not the place for you! There are three very friendly dogs- Cha Cha, Spike and their son Jackson who spend most of their days sleeping or checking out whats for lunch! Overall I couldn't have asked for a better place to spend a week in Honduras!

I couldn't have had a better 2 weeks! The hacienda is beautiful, the food is great, the town is charming, but the people truly make the experience wonderful. We felt like family and didn't want to leave but that will just make going back even sweeter.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hacienda La Esperanza (The hacienda of hope), the only bed and breakfast in all of Honduras, or perhaps the world, whose sole reason for existing is to help the indigenous poor of Honduras. Tourists who stay with us find that we are donating back 100% of all room revenues to support our medical clinic to treat the Mayan Chorti Indians of Central America, who are some of the poorest people on the planet. Indeed, Hacienda La Esperanza has a cause worth supporting. This Spanish Colonial Estate is a welcome relief for many travelers who come to Central America, and it is known for its incredible attention to detail. For example every component of the Hacienda had to be made by hand from authentic period materials From the hand crafted iron work, to the it lovely antique rustic furniture, you will feel as if transported back in time to the late part of 18th century Central America. As you look around you will discover that the Hacienda La Esperanza is filled with all sorts of period antiques, as well as original painting from some of the best artists in Honduras. Visitors are inspired by the peaceful setting of the Hacienda, and often remark about the way the way the world seems to take on a slower pace the moment they arrive. Abundant green vistas, lovely flowers, and numerous native birds, top off the picture perfect effect. With great attention to service, details, and a cause that helps others, you have the winning combination that defines the spirit of Hacienda La Esperanza. Ours is a mood of spirit, combined with a deep respect for our guests. The term "mi casa es su casa" is not a cliche at the Hacienda La Esperanza. We really mean it, and when you enter our gates you become a member of the family.. We care about your needs, and will do everything in our power to see that you are amazed and enchanted with everything about the Hacienda. The heart of the Hacienda is found in our Kitchen. Here we make the magic that you expect. Our breakfasts are famous, and our Honduras dishes and desserts will make your mouth water. All of our vegetables come either from our own organic gardens or from the local markets. All of our guests are free to enjoy our homemade bread at any time. Upon request we are always happy to brew you a cup of our special organic coffee that is grown in the mountains nearby. All of which is complimentary. If you seek, you will find that we are into wildlife and fauna. Here we value, and work in harmony with nature to bring an incredible experience to you. We are very popular with the birding set, and the Hacienda has been listed as a Central American hot spot with sighting of up to 36 different species of birds here on the estate grounds. We are located just outside of the town of Copan Ruinas. The walk into the town is 5 minutes and we offer complimentary rides to town as well as many of the sites. The advantage of this is the serene quietness and great sleep that our guests talk about. The entire Hacienda is enclosed private and gated, with secure parking for all of our guests. ... more   less
