“What a great place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2009

We spent five nights at the Yat B'alam with two other couples. Since there are only four rooms, it felt like we had our own private hotel. Hugo and Rina were great, helping us make travel arrangements and advising us on things to do. The hotel itself is immaculate. The accompanying restaurant is good and fun. Copan Ruinas is a great place to visit. We could have happily spent a few more days or weeks there.

Yat Balam is an amazing boutique hotel in the heart of Copan Ruinas. From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed. The owners and the whole staff were absolutely wonderful. We honestly didn't want to leave! Our room was #1 and it faced the mountains and also the street. Noisy you might ask? Not at all! With sound proof windows you can tune out everything.
The simple decor yet elegant makes you fall in love with the whole place. The hotel mimics a colonial style street with little boutiques (local art) and a cafe, where we enjoyed a lovely breakfast.
We can't wait to be back and spend more time in Copan Ruinas and stay at Yat Balam.

We stayed for 3 nights at Yat Balam in January 2009 -- Originally we planned on staying in Copan Ruinas for maybe one night maximum, but once we saw how cute the town was and checked into our room at Yat Balam, we immediately extended our stay another 2 nights...

Managers/Owners Rina and Hugo were so very helpful and friendly, giving tons of good advice and even helping me with calls to arrange accommodations in Antigua.

Our rooms (we stayed in 2 different rooms -- #1 and #4) -- were both clean, comfortable, beautifully decorated. #1 -- One of the larger rooms that faces out to the street below had a balcony, large sitting area with couches and table, walk-through closet area and bathroom. Both rooms were very nice but definitely try to get one of the bigger ones -- so worth it! Both rooms had a mini fridge which was great.

The ground of the boutique hotel are charming, like a little hacienda almost with its own boutiques, courtyard and a yummy cafe...We had breakfast there every day, the signature baledas were delicious and a good value. I also loved the toasted bagel with cream cheese and jalepeno jelly.

I have to add something about the bathrooms -- they were lovely and modern, and the showers had the BEST water pressure I have ever had on any trip to more than 20 countries! After being on the road for almost 10 days at this point in the trip, I was thrilled to have a hot, powerful shower to really scrub away all the dust and get my hair truly clean (you long hair gals will appreciate this for sure).

I can't recommend Yat Balam enough for the overall experience, great location in town, value and friendly staff.

  • Liked — Very stylish decor, overall charm, great location
  • Disliked — If I had to change anything, I'd make the beds softer for my taste...

Friendly English-speaking owners and a large, clean comfortable room (room#2) - we can recommend this as a place to stay when visiting the ruins. Apparently the hotel is one year old this week (Nov 21).
We found that the map they gave us was all we needed to tour the ruins - having learnt a lot about Mayan culture, architecture etc earlier while in Tikal, we enjoyed going around the Copan site by ourselves - the information panels are bilingual. As from anywhere in Copan Ruinas, getting to the ruins is a pleasant short walk from the hotel.
There's a multitude of eating places around.

Small, nice hotel in Copan Ruinas. The owner and the staff are extremely kind and helpful. The rooms are very clean and well appointed. Great location in the village. In the same building (in typical colonial style) some nice shops and a bar where you can enjoy a great breakfast. I absolutely suggest it for your stay in Copan.

Our stay in Y'at Balam was heavenly. The owners Rina and Hugo have created a charming boutique hotel and staffed it with friendly, knowledgeable people. Specifically, Gill and Kathy were superb and surpassed our expectations. From doing our laundry to running out to a pharmacy when I got hit with a gastrointestinal bug, we felt so welcomed. (Note, do not eat the food in the San Pedro Sula bus station!) We savored our breakfast on our balcony overlooking the mountains and mist and delighted in the artisanal shops on the main level. Situated in the center of Copan Ruinas, you can walk to the ruins in approximately 20 minutes, all of the restaurants and shops are at your doorsteps and a taxi ride from the Hedman Alas station is $2. While this boutique hotel may be small in size, only four rooms, it is colassal on charm, style, cleanliness, and hospitality. Make your reservations early!

  • Liked — The decor and comfort of the bed, the location, the people!
  • Disliked — As it can rain quite heavily in the evenings, they need to pay attention to some walls with water stains.

The Yat B’alam is the Gem of Copan Ruinas! Our room was perfect in every way – beautifully decorated, stylish, spacious, cool and clean – exactly as pictured on their website. The common areas were so inviting, with many extra touches – comfortable seating, candles, flower petals in the water fall pools. Very relaxing!

Some of the extra amenities: soundproof windows (great for sleeping in), refrigerator and DVD player in the room (DVDs to borrow, too) and a secure parking garage if you have a car. The café was very convenient with excellent coffee, great food and outstanding service. They also have their own water supply system – this became important as during our visit, the town experienced a water main break. While many businesses, restaurants, etc. had to shut down, we were able to enjoy refreshing showers after a long, hot day.

Best of all, the owners were wonderful hosts. They were eager to ensure that our stay was comfortable and enjoyable. This attitude was shared by their entire staff and all services were personal and impeccable. The Yat B’alam is the truly best find in Copan Ruinas.

  • Liked — The friendly and personal attention and service.
  • Disliked — That we couldn't stay longer!
