“Wonderful Week at the Lighthouse”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2009

We stayed at the lighthouse for a week in June and loved it! Aside from the hammoks and comfy chairs one of the things we loved the most about staying there was being above the water. Every morning we woke up, made a cup of coffee and watched the fishes wake below us before heading off to dive. The lighthouse is in a good location close to Altons and several other dive shops as well as RJs BBQ which has great food! We enjoyed staying a walk away from the central area since the roads were loud and there was lots of motorbike traffic that made the center hectic. We highly recommend the lighthouse and look forward to returning someday.

This inn seems like it jumped right out of a postcard! Hosts are charming and you're literally right on top of the water. You can hear the ocean from your room! All rooms have great views, and more importantly, great ventilation! Fans and small kitchenettes in every room, the inn keepers even provide drinking water for you!

The Inn is towards the end of town, a 10 minute walk from the Pier... but the walk is totally worth it. Great beach located a short walk across, lots of good food options around too.

We only stayed one night, but wished we'd stayed longer! Also, if you stay 2 nights or more you get great discounts on the room.

Thelma and O'Neil are more than innkeepers, they are amazing hosts! I have stayed in hotels on 4 continents, and never been in a cleaner hotel. The rooms are simply furnished, but servicable and immaculate. The airconditioner is quiet and efficient. They sell 5 gallon jugs of water for almost nothing. The deck is wonderful, the grounds are like a private haven from the hustle/bustle of Utila town.
We dove with Deep Blue which is on the other end of town - but we made the walk at a leisurly pace each morning in about 10 minutes.
RJ's restaurant is just across the street from the Lighthouse, and serves good food. The Mariposa has great mini-pizzas as well as good food and a great view. The best kept secret - in my mind - is the UltraLight cafe which serves awesome Mediterranean food. It is further west of Deep Blue dive shop (not the resort) about 5 minutes walk.
Utila is not for the average tourist. It is a challenge to get there, you can do all the shopping on the island in less than an hour, but the people are great, diving is great and it is economical. And - totally relaxing!

We stayed 4 nights in the Lighthouse during our stay on Utila and were overall very pleased with the service, location, view of the bay (especially at sunset), and simple, clean beauty of the place. O'neil and Thelma are inn keepers who really take care of their guests. The rides to and from the ferry, the low cost supply of water, and their tips on where to go for food and excursions super helpful..... Only downsides are: a) the whole building sways when folks walk around the wrap around deck and b) the beds are not particularly sturdy, they are kind of light and spongy and definitely smaller than queen size, probably full size.

truely - go to Roatan and skip Utila, but if u do go - the light house is the best hotel (and believe me we checked the most of them...)
the ownrs are super nice, the place is beautiful, clean and the location is great.

Thelma and her husband McNeil were immediately warm and friendly. The place was beautiful, especially for us usually budget travelers. $50 a night is usually our absolute max, and it was totally worth it here. Only advice, get a second level room, the people above us liked to walk around a lot. Wish we could have brought the place with us when we went to Roatan... $50 a night over there does not get you a gem of a room like at the Lighthouse.

We stayed at the LIghthouse for a week in February and really enjoyed the sunsets and fish under the deck. The owners were very helpful and run a first class small hotel. The rooms were nicely appointed and had everything we needed. The location was great to walk to all the great restaurants on Utila.
