Firstly, let me start by saying that if you are looking for a full resort in Utilia, the Lighthouse is not the hotel that you are looking for. I don't want you to be disappointed. But if you want a really cool place to relax and watch a sunset, and be right on the sea, this place cannot be beat. It is a ten minute walk from the ferry wharf and you can arrange a pickup in the hotel's golf cart, walk, or catch one of the mini cabs the run along the fifteen foot wide, concrete, main street. There is a taxi that will meet the incoming plane if that is how you plan to arrive. ($2.50US). The hotel is a one of a kind that is owned by some wonderful English speaking folks. Oneal is a Utilia native, born of European settlers who came here many years ago, and Thelma is an American born sweetheart that has lived her life connected with this part of the world. The hotel is immaculate, well kept, well painted, well everything. The owners are a great source of information and can put you in touch with about any activity you want around this small, beautiful island. There are a lot of interesting, one of a kind, restaurants within a ten to twenty minute walk from the place. A bakery within ten minutes has some of the best coffee and cinnamon rolls that I have ever had my hands on. You can arrange trips to one of the many snorkel spots and can actually walk to one good one off of the shore about thirty minutes to the west. There are a ton of dive operations close by if that is your interest. We always plan to come back here on every trip we make to Honduras and we think that is a really cool place.

Room Tip: The rooms on the top floor,on the sea side, are by far the most fun with the super sunset views.

We stayed here after staying at our dive centre during while getting our dive certification (accommodation is usually included). The lighthouse is definitely a step up from the average accommodation on Utila where backpacker dorms or very basic rooms are the median. The rooms are delightful with full amenities (aircon, tv, hot shower, microwave, fridge) and the views are unsurpassable. After a week and a bit of some crazy partying it was great to have this paradise to escape to. The prices are not backpacker but they are not expensive, especially if there are two of you and you stay for 7 days or more. But the best thing about this place is the care and attention from the owner (I feel terrible now that I cannot recall her name). She is full of great information about the island and goes above and beyond to ensure that your stay the is as comfortable and relaxing as possible. She has great pride in her hotel and home and it shows in the care that she has towards all her guests. Rather than staying in a hotel it feels more like you are visiting with family. I would recommend this place to stay for anyone wanting something more up market and away from the noise (although close enough to still be involved if you want to me).
Note - there is no dive centre affiliated with this hotel.

We had 3 amazing days and nights at this place. The owners are nice people that give helpful tips for traveling around the island. We loved the spot, the room and the location close to a private beach and some snorkel-fishing spots.

Room Tip: you can have bay room for less expensive than sea room and both are great.

My wife and I stayed here (unexpectedly) for 3 days on our honeymoon. We liked the Bay Islands so much we wanted to stay longer, and our previous hosts (Henry and Victoria Karpinski of Island Life Tours - also excellent, see their website here: http://www.islandlifetours.com/Home_Page.html) recommended the Lighthouse. The accommodations were excellent (hot water, clean, with free hammocks, mini-fridge, etc.) with outstanding views, a secure location, and excellent local suggestions from Thelma. There was a boat dock; it was an easy walk/bike ride to the rest of Utila's attractions. It was a great place to stay. On-site laundry also available as well as early morning rides to the Utila ferry.

Small quibble: the beds in some of the rooms are a bit small for couples.

I stayed at the Lighthouse on a recent 10-day scuba diving trip to Utila. The owners are wonderful - they go above and beyond to make your stay the best it can be. The rooms are great, and for a basic island like Utila it really is worth it to spend the extra few dollars for a/c (especially in the summer) and to stay at such a great place. Stay for a week and get the weekly rate!

I can't wait to go back... hopefully it won't be too long.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the ocean are the best for sunset views.

After many trips to the island, its consistently the best. The kind friendly host Thelma is a clean fanatic, ( probably the only one on the island) . The rooms are always spotless, decorated island style in light blue pastel and clapboard new england style white, and I mean like brand new spotless. Unlike most/many all of the other places a little closer to center of town the bar music will not keep you up at night. 100 yards to two dive schools, Individual hammocks with each room on the astounding veranda--- the entire hotel is built out over the water. The rooms have kitchens, Cable TV which works fine, good supply of hot water too, 4 minute walk to the best public park beach on the island. Good secure place, where you do not have to worry about your stuff or bed bugs.
