“Great Family Vacation at Barefoot Cay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2013

Had a great family vacation at Barefoot Cay! We had two teenagers finishing up their PADI Open Water Certification and the dive shop was fantastic. Kelly Ash was the dive master for their training and we can't recommend him enough. One of our two in training had a bit of a struggle, and Kelly couldn't have been more patient and encouraging. We stayed in one of the two bedroom lofts over the dive shop and it was roomy and perfect for our group. The patio off the back has a great view of the resort, and a nice breeze in the evenings. The food and the staff were wonderful. We felt welcome and relaxed from the welcome tour through check out time.
Two suggestions. 1. We rented a truck through the resort and we were very happy we did. It was great for exploring or heading down to West End in the evenings. It was cheaper renting through the resort vs. the airport, and they delivered and retrieved it right in the resort parking lot. So simple. I wandered in the Barefoot Cay office to inquire about a car, and in 20 minutes the truck was in the parking lot. Wow! 2. We had the all inclusive option, but it doesn't include drinks. The Distribution Center right next door to the resort is a great, inexpensive place to buy sodas and beer. (Take a left out of the resort driveway.) It looks totally industrial, and we would never have ventured in without the wise advice of a resort staff member. They don't speak much English, and we didn't speak much Spanish, but bringing along an empty can of what you are looking for helps! 2. The Bulk Gourmet another block down on the same side of the street has the best liquor prices and selection of all the places we looked. Eldon's is your best bet for groceries.

Hurry down to Barefoot Cay as fast as you can. You won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: We stayed in a 2 bedroom loft over the dive shop, and we had plenty of space, a wonderful view, and...

This was our anniversary getaway and we stayed at Barefoot Cay for a week. Right from our arrival to the day we departed, we were treated well by the most hospitable staff we've seen so far.

The place itself lends to its uniqueness since it is away from the hustle-bustle of the island and you aren't really disturbed here. While West Bay has the better colored blue waters :), this island provides ample opportunities to snorkel and scuba right from the hotel.

The food could be improved but we weren't dissatisfied with any of the meals. The staff went out of their way to accommodate dietary preferences.

We stayed in the lofts and really enjoyed the cleanliness & great views. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are spacious. They provide a full-kitchen, so you can cook if you needed to. (It is worth waking up really early to catch the sunrise over the water.)

Snorkeling and scuba here is really good. While it was the first time we tried our hand (and feet) at this, we had a great time since the staff from the dive shop were great. They also take you on fishing trips on the dive boats if they are not running at full capacity. We didn't get the certification, but several other patrons were taking it here and recommended doing it from here. The aquatic life off the palapa is great and they have the best dive spots not too far from the hotel.

The palapa is a great place to relax or snorkel from and we visited it frequently.

The hotel allows private boats to park here and several boat owners use the pool here so we met a lot of interesting folks during our visit here. It kept the place interesting.

The hotel has a resident parrot Shakaroon, who talks and wakes you up each morning. Quite a character and kept us smiling with its antics.

The pool was nice and clean at all times. They also provide towels at all times and have clean changing rooms.

We didn't use the spa so cannot comment on how good it is but we saw someone else getting a massage on the palapa so we are guessing they can accommodate requests like that.

Rental cars and taxis are easily available via the front desk. We did a one day outing to West Bay (which we really enjoyed) and were happy with the travel arrangements.

Overall, we felt this hotel was great for couples, families, youngsters alike. Since they have limited rooms, the place doesn't feel crowded or full at any time. We did reserve ahead of time since it was peak season when we visited.

We'd stay here again if we visit Roatan again in the future. We had a great time!

Room Tip: Reserve stay ahead of time. Lofts are very comfortable and we didn't feel the need to be in the...

It seems like a vague memory, but I only returned 2 days ago from what was the most amazing vacation I've ever had. Barefoot Cay, the dive shop, and staff had everything to do with it! From the regular contact and preparation prior to arrival through to our departure, the experience was overall positive and enjoyable.

We were met at the airport by a friendly driver and piled into the van with the AC blasting to help us cool and adjust on what was a particularly hot and humid day even by their own admission. Our bags were taken to our room for us while as first time guests we were taken on a tour of the resort and services, all of which are excellent. The bottom line is this:
- the beds are very comfortable
- the air conditioning in the bedrooms worked very well for comfortable nights
- the pool area and palapa are great for relaxing
- the food and serving staff are just outstanding, with some of the more simple dishes very tasty
- the maintenance and condition of the property are very good, especially considering some of the other places we saw while touring around were a little more "rustic"
- arrangements for any off resort activities and cabs and such were well handled and professionally handled
- the guest services manager made the rounds every day and spoke to us to ensure things were satisfactory
- housekeeping always made a fun "towel animal" every day and paid attention to all the details in the room and bathroom
- the dive shop and staff with valet service are also excellent. The divemasters and interns and boat captains are friendly, knowledgeable, and really helped to give us a great experience and exposure to a variety of the reef system and ocean life there. There is a LOT to see underwater and they really helped us find it all from tiny shrimp the size of pinheads to 5 foot long groupers and eels and sea turtles

Granted, there are a few nits and I would agree with as others have pointed out, namely the resort is right between two parts of an industrial harbor area so you see some larger boats and need to be a little careful if you go out too far for kayaking. This is a little less than ideal, although we had no trouble with noise or other issues from it. Also, location wise, there isn't a whole lot around to do like if you were in the West End, but if you're diving all day anyway, this isn't an issue. This place is a little more expensive than some on the island, but it is well worth it.

Room Tip: We stayed in the lofts above the dive shop, and while not as "private" as the bungalows on...

We visited Barefoot a couple of months ago for our yearly scuba trip. Just arriving we knew this place was going to be great. We stayed in one of the villas with another couple that we travel with and it was beyond amazing. Waking up with the beach at your front porch is an experience like no other. I have never been somewhere with better or more attentive staff. The diving was incredible and the dive staff was world class. I'd keep talking about how great this place was but I'd have to start reusing words. If you get the chance, go here. I would suggest renting a car at least one day because the island has a lot to see and experience. We enjoyed eating lunch out on the island but you wouldn't want to miss dinner. It was like having our own little private island.

May 2013 was our 6th visit to Roatan and our first to Barefoot Cay. We are divers and have spent many incredible hours underwater in Roatan. We have stayed at 3 other resorts and will be going back to Barefoot. It is a small resort which has everything one wants on a vacation. The rooms are comfortable, clean and well appointed. One can choose to eat at the restaurant or cook for yourself. We like to be on our own schedule and cook for ourselves. The staff arranged a rental car for us which we picked up at the airport. We then drove to the resort, checked in and went to the grocery which is only a few miles away and easy to find. We then returned to the resort and the car was picked up by the rental agency the following day. One of may examples of excellent service. The dive operation is first rate. The grounds are beautifully kept. The pool is great for actually swimming as well as just relaxing. The beach is a true beach, clean and tranquil. The staff is positively wonderful and can arrange any sort of experience for its guests.

Room Tip: For divers, the rooms above the dive shop are excellent

This is not the typical review since we were marina guests.
We sailed to Roatan from Miami with the marina of Barefoot Cay as our first port of call. After 5 days at sea, land arose, we turned right between Guanaja and Roatan and followed to the coast toward the marina. Realizing that none of the smaller channels are well marked, we called Barefoot Cay. Stephanie responded and sent out a boat to guide us in, which "Chalupa" did perfectly. When we entered the area of the property, two people were already on the dock to help us tie up.
We needed laundry service, and although it was in the middle of the afternoon, the "laundry ladies" as we called them brought everything back folded perfectly just a couple of hours later; they stayed extra time to finish the job.

That set the tone for a wonderful 8 days in a small but perfect marina with beautiful docks, a couple of very protected slips and great water and electric hookup. The service was impeccable: after morning outings/dives, we would spend most afternoons at the beautiful pool and were waited on hand and foot. While we stayed on our boat and did not use the villas, we did find that the bathrooms/showers by the pool were perfectly kept. We had dinner in the restaurant twice - very good food lovingly and beautifully prepared and presented. There are two seatings, and menu offers good variety and choice. One forgets easily that one is on a small island with limited agricultural resources. (We have done a lot of sailing in the various Caribbean island; hard to find this quality of food). They also have an excellent wine list.

To get off the Cay, one takes a little shuttle boat across the waterway to leads up into French Harbor. On the main island, there is the dive shop and above it, additional guest rooms. Although we did not use their diving equipment or tours (we have our own and used our own dinghi to get to any of the unbelievably near dive spots) we were all impressed with the facility. Whoever designed the place deserves an award. Aside from the esthetics, every dive boat returning home had a lot of happy and excited faces on it.
I had the chance to watch some diving classes by the gazebo that sits right ontop of an inner reef. Very thorough. Plus, the spot is perfect of easy snorkeling and the gazebo for total R&R.

The grounds - there are lovely little spots all over the couple of acres (more or less) where guests find a hammock, or some chaises, or a set up of Adirondack chairs with some tables under a trellis. If one wants to have dinner in one of those delightful little spots - the staff accommodates you with candles, firepots or anything you could possibly desire.

Since Barefoot Cay is separated from the main island by about 100 feet, there is a sense of closeness to the real life of the surrounding harbor. Just adjacent to the Diveshop is a dock with a couple of cargo vessels tied up by a beverage plant. However, they only leave periodically. The channel towards the east that leads to French Harbor is too shallow to accommodate the cargo ships, so the only traffic are leisure craft or small boats. In other words, it is very peaceful while still giving you the idea of being part of the real world.

Finally - the official greeter, Chacarron. He is a Yellownaped Amazon Parrot who charms everyone. We all miss his "Hello" and we all 7 of us want to return!

As I had been to AKR in 2007 and loved the experience, I was looking forward to go back for my xmas 2012 vacation. Fortunately (yeah) they were full. That gave me the chance to discover Barefoot.

A few words are enough to describe Barefoot: high class boutique resort. I think it can accomodate no more than 30 guest or so at any time. Our room was actually on the main island, in the same building as the diving shop, overlooking the boats. Although we would have loved to have a cottage on the cay, that room did not disappoint us. On the contrary. Everything is crystal clean, the design of the room is awsome, no cheesy taste there. Very large room with kitchen. Ha! Kitchen. Useless, unless you want to save a few bucks. The food at the restaurant on the cay is sooooo good. Not your typical diving resort buffet style, even not comparable to the best of those. Made to order quality food. A menu designed a while ago by a real chef and staff trained to cook it perfectly. And flexible. My gf has some food restrictions and won't eat shrimps or pork for instance. "What would you like darling? Fish? Veggie lasagna? Name it".

The diving was very good although not the best I've had. But I'll go back in a beat and next time I dive with them I'll simply ask for more variety and will research my site before I go. *When I was there*, I though they had a tendancy to stay close to home and that somehow restricts the options. Mary's place is reaaally nice but not worth going three times in three days... However, the dive staff service is what's called "valet diving". They'll take super care of you. Don't look for you gear in your locker, it's already all setup and waiting for you on the boat when you signed up for the dive (of course). If you don't like others setting up your gear, just tell them and they'll adjust to your preferences. My girlfriend being a beginner and pretty anxious about her first boat dive, they paired up with our own DM and she loved the experience.

'Nough said. Just go.

Room Tip: When I go back, I'll try to get something on the cay facing the ocean. But even the rooms on the...
