This is my second visit to Mahogany Bay--my first trip was 8 years ago and at that time when you docked in port you saw a few small local stores and there wasn't too much else to do other than go on a shore excursion. On this trip when I looked out of my window--I thought I had been transported to a Florida theme park. I literally had to rub my eyes to believe what I saw from the window of my stateroom. Instead of the small wooden structures on the pier--there is now a wide paved walkway lined with the typical cruise ship stores selling diamonds and alcohol. What makes it seem like a theme park is the chair ski lift that transports you from the shopping area to the beach. I don't have anything against those stores owned and operated by cruise ships--but I sure hope that the locals didn't get a raw deal when the cruise ships took over their island paradise. The line to the chair lift was long and since it was so pricey--we walked to the beach. (I swear that the beach wasn't there the last time I visited the area.) The walk is short--maybe 10 minutes, and scenic. Now to describe the beach: Imagine the most crowded beach you have ever been on with beach chairs closer together than on the Lido deck. You can pay to get a beach chair with a shade cover--but your view is simply that of the beach chair's cover in front of you. You literally couldn't walk between the rows of chairs. The water was murky and about 10 feet off the shoreline the bottom was seaweed. The beach was incredibly claustrophobic and we decided to leave after 10 minutes. The "scenic" walk back to the pier area is quite nice. Maybe we just hit Mahogany Beach on a crowded day--there were at least 3 cruise ships in port. We decided to try the Zip Line Express right across the street from the shopping area. It was a very safety conscious Zip Line, somewhat reasonably priced for a zip line, and very scenic. In a few weeks they are opening a zip line down to the beach--which should afford spectacular views.
