Small restaurant with a very pleasant, wellcoming atmosphere. The owners, partly european, will cook you delicious food according to current suplies. With a pleasent music, wifi and talk, we enjoyed it very much.

“Excellent homemade food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2014

Cafe Canela has probably the best food for the price you pay. They usually have a choice between three different lunch offers for a very small price, comparing to other restaurants. Its clean, good quantities, a drink included, all in a very comfortable atmosphere with very good wifi internet connection! The owners are really nice and welcoming as well. It feels like eating in their house. The dishes of the day vary a lot so, but its basically nicaraguan food. And its delicious!

“Big flavor. Simple preparation. Amazing value.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2014

The title of this review says it all.
We have been on the road for 8 months and this has been one of our best meals. We are on a budget, but 18Q, or $2.25 is not a lot to pay when you have decided to not eat a tortilla 20 different ways.
Ordered was the fish, which was breaded and pan fried whole. It was the freshest fish we have had in a while. Even on the coast we have had frozen fish. So a big sigh of relief to get fresh fish, even from a lake, in Xela. The breading consisted of a few simple things. It was a simple, non over-analysed main course. The gallo pinto was as good as any we have had in Nicaragua. And we ate a lot of it there as it was about all we could afford. Also served with our meals was a bread we have yet to find in Xela. Some of the "best" bakeries in Xela seem afraid to turn out decent bread. Cafe Canela may have made this in house, we did not get the scoop on the bread.
My dish was grilled chicken, as well as the rice and bread. The chicken was very tender, and did not need a thing added at the table. Also served with both meals were soft fried plantains, which were not at all greasy.
As mentioned, this is a non fussy place, although the atmosphere is a few steps up from a comedor. Seems they have recently moved, and this space has outdoor seating surrounded by it's own enclosed courtyard, as well as some artwork.
We had to thank the owner/cook Marta. She filled us in on her "recipe" for good food. Keep it simple and fresh. That is enough to keep us coming back.

“Still a nice place.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2014

The last time I ate at Cafe Canela was about a year ago. I was in the United States most of the time since then, so I was not able to go back. I went for coffee today and I still like the casual atmosphere. I will return for a meal when I am hungry.
