“Great Location but needs improvement and investment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

The hotel has great location and a lot of potential for the owners to improve it. The rooms are really basic. The T.V. is old. It isn´t easy to have the hot water running. The toiletries are poor and cheap. The towels are old and crusty. The beds are soft. The Hotel is big but very dark. It has a nice parking lot underneath it, and it is really safe. I recommend it, but don´t expect much of it.

Room Tip: Have breakfast a few blocks from the hotel in a small coffee house inside a building and go to the b...

We moved here after staying at another hotel which was double the price and we were pleasantly surprised. Wifi, comfortable rooms, great location and friendly helpful staff at the front desk.
Don't expect the chocolate on the pillow, grand service but this place gave us exactly what a expect for this unique city.

We stayed two nights in the Villa Real Plaza. We were visiting a friend completing an internship in Xela. The rooms are not very modern, and yes, the you can hear everything in the place (people talking, people walking by). However, the location is amazing, there is a certain Guatemala charm to the place, and you can't beat the price for what you're getting. We had breakfast included for only Q.5. VERY SAFE - nothing got stolen, they looked out for us, and there was no one in the hotel who shouldn't have been there. Strong internet signal in certain parts of the hotel. Also had a safe parking lot. Cable TV with English-speaking channels.

However, we also speak Spanish, have traveled a lot, knew what to expect form reading the reviews on Trip Advisor, and were not looking for a 5-star experience. Nor were we looking to spend a lot of time in the hotel. It was a safe, clean place to sleep.

Recommendations: Look at your room first and ask if the wireless signal reaches there. Also check out the bathroom and try the hot water. Some of the showers were tiny and with not-so-cold water.

Very fun corner of the Park to stay on. Can walk to everything. And GREAT price ($73 USD for 2 nights, breakfast included). As long as you are realistic about what you're getting.

Room Tip: Recommendations: Look at your room first and ask if the wireless signal reaches there. Also check o...

I had been wanting to try this hotel after several visits to Xela. I was sadly disappointed by the entire experience. Cheap "suicide showers" which barely works in some rooms, and not at all in others, bright hall lights which shine into the rooms through the glass room doors, noisy hallways, and poor service. Perhaps if they acted like they cared it would make a difference.

This was our second option after we left Hotel Modelo and it was one of our worst night over all.....thanks to this kind of hotels they don't attract tourist, we left for Panajachel where we can find a nice hotel with nicer people.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2009

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Villa Real on February 12, 2009. The location is great — across the street from the central park. We stayed in the old part of the hotel (room #212) . The room was clean, but did smell a little old and musty. The window opened to the common area below. With the window closed, it was easy to hear people talking below, even the staff in the middle of the night. Our principal complaint was that there was no hot water — not even a hot water faucet on the bathroom sink. There was a single faucet that turned on and off!! I shaved with very cold water. We did not try to take showers in the morning, but possibly there was hot water in the shower.
