“A lovely place with a great host”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

We had a very clean, spacious and comfortable room and a rooster to wake us up at the crack of dawn (the only drawback) so if there's a room away from the rooster, ask for it. Our host Richard, loves the country and is more than happy to share any info you ask for in perfect English.

Room Tip: Get a room as far away from the rooster(s) as possible.

We stayed several comfortable nights here. It is honestly run, with a genuinely knowledgeable owner, and lovely staff. It is a short 8min walk away from the centre of Panajachel, but that suited us just fine. We originally planned to just stay the one night, but eventually decided to remain there for three, due to the fact that we were at the source of some wonderful insight of Lake Atitlan. We had done our fair share of party travelling. Los Encuentros appealed to our culture exploring side. The proprietor Richard Morgan even managed to organize a Mayan fire ceremony for us, at very short notice, and we are extremely grateful for that opportunity. The court yard is tranquil, clean water is always available, and we always felt safe. I would return here again.

While this B and B has a certain funky charm, the pictures to me are deceiving. The location is very isolated which would suggest quiet. However, I spent a miserable night listening to a chorus of barking dogs. Several other guests remarked similarly. In order to go anywhere you need to penetrate a well barricaded site (which of course offers safety) and emerge on a small street and hike to town through a rather unpleasant dusty area. I like breakfast but cornflakes don't make it for me. I also don't want to go to the effort for breakfast to go into town which is anything but charming. If I am at Lake Atitlan I believe that seeing the lake is part of the experience.

Room Tip: My room had a bathroom outside of the bedroom through a separate door? Strange?

The ideal hotel location is an individual matter. Many guests like that we are in a safe, family neighborhood, a 10-15 minute walk to town center. We are even closer to the town's only supermarket & the public beach. .Our grounds are surrounded by an attractive, flower-covered stone wall & a secure door. This is a matter of architecture & normal security. One need not feel "barricaded" as we are in a friendly, family neighborhood with recently paved roads & well lit streets. We have much less street noise (loud music, traffic, etc.) than the town center, but dogs and roosters are part of the Mayan ambience - are everywhere in Panajachel - and can't be readily muffled.

2 nights, inexpensive, charming, clean, great service, nice owner, rustic, good value.
Extra mile-Was being harassed by cabbies and Mgr Javier really took control and settled an very uncomfortable situation for next day travel that would have made us overpay & hooked us up with a great driver to Chi Chi. We would go back. 1 10 minute walk to town but safe and town is a little loud anyway but fun to walk thru.

Room Tip: courtyard rooms are tranquil we stayed in tower less charm but solid rustic room. Roosters in the mo...

If you want to stay down where the "action" in in Pana (who in the world would want to?) then be aware this hotel is a 10 minute trek from the town. It is across the bridge in a very nice clean and safe neighborhood. Accomodations are clean, well kempt, and nicely decorated. The owner was out of town when we came thru, but the staff was very helpful and eager to please.

We only stayed one night, as we were headed on to other places, but this was definitely a good place to stay. I would recommend it and would stay here again.

There was a work out facility (evidently the owner is a marathoner!), that was a nice touch.

We spent 3 nights at Posada Los Encuentros. Our first impression was great, extremely friendly & helpful check in makes you feel right at home. The room was cute and nicely decorated with Mayan art, however a little small and cramped.

Our only complaint was that our room was not cleaned at all for the 3 days we were there, which would be fine except the room was not that clean to begin with so by day 3 we were feeling a little grotty.

As other reviewers have mentioned it is a little out of town, this is not an issue for us. it only took 10 mins to walk into town and at night we caught a tuk tuk home for only 5Q.

Breakfast is pretty standard, nothing special. Coffee good though.

For the price I would say it is good deal and the service is a standout. Very friendly staff!

As a bed & breakfast accommodation where guests generally spend several days in an-almost extended family atmosphere, our room maintenance is tailored to the expectations of our clients - who tend to rate room privacy highly. Most guests prefer to make their own beds. Our standards are to empty garbage daily, change towels every-other day (unless requested more frequently) We change the linen regularly. Breakfast -time we seek to engage our guests in friendly conversation- and ask how everything is for them. Naturely, there are occasional problems that can involve the service of a maid .We seek to please & complaints are attended to promptly.

I have stayed in Richard's oasis three times now, and rejoice each time I arrive. There is Mayan art everywhere, a tranquil garden to read and relax in, a natural hot tub fed from underground hot springs, and a room with exercise equipment. Yes, there are barking dogs, roosters crowing and dawn firecrackers, but this is Guatemala! If you want a sterile chain hotel with finest linens, do not stay here, but if you want a real taste of another culture, this is your place.

Room Tip: Some rooms have small kitchens. Handy for longer stays. Great rates by the month.
