“Comfortable, convenient, great staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

I have visited Panajachel many times and this is my favorite place to stay. Even though it is just off Avenida Santander (very near the lake), it is quiet (yes, there is the occasional rooster crowing and/or dog barking, on Saturday nights some club noise, but if you can't handle that you should probably stay home!). The rooms are spotlessly clean, plenty of hot water, and the balconies are delightful. Free WiFi and cable tv are plusses (I was there just after the US presidential election so was pleased to have cable tv). They now offer delicious breakfasts included in the rate. The staff is exceptional - exceptionally helpful, friendly, efficient. I love gardens, and there is no garden, but the other positives make up for that. For comfort, security and value, wouldn't stay anywhere else in Pana!

When we were looking for lodging in Pana, this place was rated #1 on TripAdvisor. We were not disappointed. It is a great value, clean, well located, with some of the most attendant staff we've experienced, including the owner Julio Estuardo Parajón C. and his wife Jeanette. Francisco and Pablo are front desk staff par excellence. Others were Jose (cleaned rooms) and Jonathan (weekends). All made us feel like family.
We knew we were in good hands from our first email contact with Julio. He responded quickly and answered all our questions and made everything easy. We made arrangements for Julio to pick us up at the airport and he was there like clockwork. The trip to Pana with him was most enjoyable...as he shared many tips of what to see and do. His wife Jeanette was one of the most gracious and kind hosts we've ever experienced...more like a good friend rather than someone we were renting a room from. She personally saw to any need/request we had. She also oversees and helps cook the breakfasts every morning that come with the room. You have your choice of 4 different options. My wife and I are vegetarian and I am also gluten free, but Jeanette and Francisco took care of us and made sure we got plenty to eat.
Julio and Jeanette started this Posada roughly 12 years ago, with just three rooms, and over the years they have built three more floors and now have 12 rooms. Their hearts and souls are in this place, they've overseen every little detail, and you can tell the difference.
Its always a pleasant surprise when you stay in a place and come away with not only a pleasant experience and memory, but with new friends as well. That was our case at the Posada de Los Volcanes.

Room Tip: #403 is on the top floor and has 2 queen beds and has a view of the lake. Our favorite room.

A Guatemalan colleague was of the opinion that “posadas” are nicer than hostels but not as nice a full service hotels. This was my first experience staying in a posada (which roughly translates as “inn”) and having stayed in hostels and hotels over the years, I think my colleague’s observation describes Posada de los Volcanes very well. On the one hand each room had its own private bathroom and color TV, there was free Wi-Fi and a free breakfast. The room was clean with solid fixtures and a comfortable bed. So it was definitely nicer than any hostel I have seen.

But there were none of the amenities you would see in one of the business class hotels back in Guatemala City: no telephone, coffee maker, shampoo, alarm clock, air con, or elevator. That is not a complaint or criticism, it is just the definition of a posada. And I did not need those amenities as I had a local cell phone, a travel alarm clock, a heating coil to make tea and instant coffee in the room, etc. The value for the money was excellent, and like I said, the place was clean and pleasant.

In addition, the location is great – just a five minute walk to either dock. Right across the street are several restaurants and a nice bookstore. The local market is worth visiting (and very tourist free) and it was just a 15 minute walk or $1 and 2 minutes via a tuk-tuk. Lots of resources, lots of options nearby.

The other thing that stands out about Posada de los Volcanes is the service. I contacted the inn by e-mail from the states and the e-mail communications were very prompt and clear and I was able to complete the reservation before I left home. And despite some last minute changes to my itinerary due to work once I got to Guatemala, they were able to take care of me.

When we got there, the service was great – the staff speaks Spanish and English very well. They were able to arrange cars and guides for us for different outings during our stay. And here is the key: I usually do not book cars or tours through hotels because there is usually a significant markup over what you would pay if you just walk down the street to the local tourist agency. Not so at Posada de los Volcanes – we compared prices with the local tour operators and found that there was not much of a “hotel mark-up”. And their drivers and guides were excellent.

The other nice thing was that while the staff offered to help make bookings for us, there was no pressure to do so. A few times my wife and I have had uncomfortable experiences at hotels where the owners gave us the hard sell to use their tour services. Not so at Posada de los Volcanes and that was a relief.

Overall it’s a good place, good location, good service, and good people.

Clean basic rooms, central and great friendly service. These guys arranged our private transfer from GC, local trips and onward travel efficiently, it was lovely dealing with them. The central location of any place in Pana means some noise but the rooms were fine. The staff were also really nice when i was unwell.

This is a great little hotel and the reason for this is they go out of their way to help you with anything and everything. The rooms are basic but clean and all you really need unless you are looking for something spectacular. The location is about a block from the lakefront and you are very close to all the restaurants that Pana has to offer. Oh and the breakfast is outstanding. Try the Tropical fruit breakfast and you will not regret it.

We spent 1 night here; arriving from Guatemala City via Antigua. Got here after dark, and stopped to ask if they had rooms. They did, and negotiated the rate down from Q300 to Q250 excluding breakfast (always worth trying, since they were not full. Rooms on higher floors srateed at Q350). The room was small, but clean and spotless; with small attached bathroom. The owner spoke English, and was very helpful; all the staff were very nice. They recommended a restaurant with Guatemalan marimba music, which also turned out to be great. The hotel is on the main tourist street in Pana, and so is nicely busy. Our room was on the ground floor, and was away from the main street, so was nice and quiet. The Wifi was good, computer available in the lobby for customers to use. Nice lobby. Everything (restauranteurs, lake, lancha/ferries etc are all close by). Recommended

Room Tip: Get room away from the from street, so its quiet. All ground floor rooms are in the back, so quiet...

I had expected the rooms to be more attractive from the reviews, but regardless, ours was clean with a comfortable bed. The shower had vigorous hot water. Bottled water was provided. Directly outside our door was a balcony with views across the lake. Breakfast was excellent (several choices; we had pancakes) served in a leafy courtyard complete with parrot. Wifi was good but didn't work in our room, which was frustrating; it worked on the balcony though. The hotel owners had excellent communication in making the reservation, and organized shuttles for us from Antigua, then on to Guatemala, with zero fuss. The location is about 150m from the water, and 400m from Calle Principal. A pleasant choice, though not the most luxurious in Panajachel.
