“A room with a view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

Though not a fan of larger 'posher' hotels when we travel we chose this place for its location - and so glad we did! Panajachel is noisy, busy and just a location to stay for all the amazing and wondeful trips around the lake. We had a Lake View Room and every morning got up early to enjoy the sun rise from our little terrace and ahead the lights and shadows on the volcanoes changed every hour. Worth the little extra for this upgrade room. Breakfast was a treat evry day, lots of differnt fruits, lots of bread, eggs anyway you like, fresh juices and strong coffee. Very eager and friendly staff, all trying to speak Englisg, some better than others, always with a big smile. Be warned if you go during the busier season - most rooms are under the large (and comfortable) terrace overlooking the lake and you can hear every chair or table moved and during the nihgt dogs jump up and down from the gardens... all in all, the best place, after visiting lots of other hotels for my job, regarding location and quality, in town.

Room Tip: definitely go for the lake view rooms, or if busy time, near the hotel's museum - no view but ve...

After being taken to Chichicastenango, where many of the stalls were full of rubbish for sale to tourists and which was rather boring in comparison to many rural markets we have visited in other parts of the world, it was a pleasure for my wife and I to arrive at Posada de Don Rodrigo in Panajachel. Our lake front room was spacious, with two large beds and a private patio on to the front garden, with a magnificent view of Lago Atitlan and the volcanoes. Humming birds were flitting around the flowers just outside our room. It was wonderful to be able to watch the mists dissipate in the morning, while having breakfast in our room. We spent two nights at this hotel and were delighted with the service and food. We dined at the hotel on both nights, in their spacious dining room which surprisingly had very few other diners, even though the hotel appeared to have a reasonable number of guests. I enquired about having fresh fish from the lake and, as it was a Sunday, I was advised to wait until the next evening, when freshly caught fish would be available. It was well worth the wait to have a nicely grilled whole black bass at a reasonable price. When I gave some to my wife to taste, she wished that she too had ordered the same dish. The service in the dining room, at the front desk, as well as room service, were all very good. My only complaint would be that although our room was supposed to have wireless internet service available, this was not the case and we had to be in the proximity of the reception area for it to function. This was a very minor drawback considering all the other positives. The hotel even has an interesting little museum in its grounds. It is a very good place for a comfortable and relaxing stay.

The people who work here are across the board just plain NICE. That said, I simply cannot recommend this room at $100 per night and this is why: in the lakeside rooms - the nicest ones, in theory...the room is so dark, I cannot fully pack tonight. There is one weak light and I can't see my things to pack. During the day, it's also dark and a little depressing in the room. There is the view of the volcanos and a cool museum on property, both are special.
And these beds are SO SO hard. Like really hard and uncomfortable. I'm sitting in one writing this and it's such a hard bed, it hurts, I honestly don't think I've had that experience before.
I don't mean to be ugly because the people that work here are truly Kind and concerned for your happiness. But the hotel rooms are pretty crummy- there is no way I would ever pay $100 us to stay here. There are 20 hotels within walking distance and all are 1/2 that price or less.

We had already stayed 3 nights at their sister hotel in Antigua so we had gotten a 10% discount on our stay at this hotel too. I had read that the lake view rooms were worth the difference in price and it is really true. The other rooms seemed dark and smaller. I am sure they are ok and if you are out and about a lot then it may not matter too you. However, we really appreciated seeing the 2 volcanoes first thing in the morning. The rooms were spacious and very clean. It looks like that they recently did some updates. The grounds of the hotel are lovely and there have hammocks where you can take a siesta after visiting all the sights. The breakfast was good and the service all around was amazing. I couldn't believe that the server knew of names. I know that its a cliche but the pictures of the hotel do not do it justice. We went to the pool only one day and I wish we had more time to just relax but there is so much to do and to see in the area. I might have opted for just 2 nights in Antigua and then spend the rest of the time in Panajachel. I was actually surprised and quite pleased that we chose Panajachel for our base instead of one of the other villages. I just think that there is more to do and it is so central that staying somewhere else could be limiting.

Room Tip: Go for the lake view room. Its not that much of a splurge and the rooms are so much nicer. Also, l...

We spent time in several hotels in Guatemala during our travels and this one was probable the least liked, mainly because the room was so dark, the block we were staying in was surrounded by a very thick hedge, we tried to get moved when we arrived only to be told the all the rooms were the same.
That said the staff were very helpful, food we ate in the hotel was good and the hotel surroundings very pleasant. And best of all the hotel fixed us up with a trip around the lake which more than made up for any short comings.
The hotel terrace and dining room have great view of the volcanoes across the lake and the place is conveniently situated for the main tourist strip in Panajachel.

We are very sorry to hear that our rooms did not meet your expectations... We are currently working on some changes for that area or the hotel because several customers like yourself have been commenting that the rooms are very dark and could be better.
However hearing that our staff and your trip to the lake was a success gives us a big comfort.
We thank you for taking the time to write this review and definetely hope to serve you again in the near future.

We booked this hotel a long time in advance through a booking agency online. We had booked all our rooms with lake view and received a confirmation. Then suddenly we started getting e-mails from the hotel (and not the agency) saying that we wouldn't get lake views, but still we had to pay the same price. After many mails back and forth and with help from booking.com, we finally got two rooms (out of four) with lake view. But the hotel kept sending confirmations operating with different prices, currencies and with/without taxes included. In every confirmation it was specified that at this hotel in Panajachel we would experience traditional dances and music every night in the hotel restaurant. This turned out to be a lie - apparently it only applied to the other hotel in Antigua. The day before our arrival we got yet another confirmation saying that we would get a lake view in all rooms. What a head ache for nothing! At the hotel we discovered that they were charging us more for a so called triple room even though all the rooms were identical and children under 12 stayed for free (our son was 4). When we confronted them with this they just said that they had had a similar problem with another family some days earlier (!?) Moreover, we were only given two towels and they were removed early in the morning before we had checked out so we couldn't take a shower after using the swimming pool. In addition to this, in our room there was an authorization, saying how much they were allowed to charge you for it, and it was way much lower than in reality. A part from that we were very disappointed with the hotel amenities (e.g. Horrible shower gel and shampoo in one dispenser), the bin was full of old rubbish, there weren't any remote control for the TV nor the AC and the lock to the bath room door was broken. All in all, a horrible experience which caused us so much head ache and frustration. Overpriced hotel which apparently tries to trick their guests. The rest of the staff, the pool and the view were lovely! If you go to lake Atitlan I recommend staying at "la Casa del mundo" in stead!

Now our only purpose is to invite you to come back, and let us fix what´s already broken. We will take action with all of you comments regarding the room, towels, shampoo and bath gel, and door knob...
Once again I am very sorry I did not hear from this before, but feel free to email me at jackie@posadadedonrodrigo.com, all of your observations and comments are more than welcome, but what we most wish is for a second chance to make things right.

Again we apologize for any incovenience caused by us. We hope to hear from you, and thank you once again for your review!

There's not much to do in Panajachel so it helps to stay at a nice hotel and just enjoy the stunning views across the lake. The hammocks provided a relaxing rainy afternoon and the veranda is perfect for breakfast with full views of the volcanoes. Our room was spacious and comfortable but the bathroom was a little cramped. Staff was nice and friendly and the free internet was a big help.

Room Tip: Get a room with a lake view, it's not to be missed
