“Beautiful location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

The best part of this upscale hotel are the grounds--beautiful gardens with wonderful tropical plants of all variety and the outlook on to the Lake. The man at the reception desk was very charming and helpful; however, for the prices this hotel charges (well above all else we encountered in Guatemala), they stint on small matters of customer service. For a hair dryer, I had to walk down to the reception area where I was given one locked in a cabinet there which I had to return there.. No free wi fi offered in the rooms, though it is available in the bar area. They offer a breakfast buffet, but do not offer simply coffee and a roll or yogurt, if that is what you prefer early morning.. We ordered a coffee on the terrace late one afternoon, and never got it; the waitress simply forgot. Would be nice to offer a bar menu at night should you not want a major dinner in an empty dining room which is where we had to sit on an empty Saturday night in February at 7:00 p.m..

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a terrace.

What is there not to like about this property? The setting--a lake ringed by volcanoes; a pool area which looks out onto the view; English-style gardens; artworks in the hallways; rooms with a balcony; beautiful decor; fantastic food---it's all more than one could ask for.

Caravan Tours, once again, chose a great hotel.

Hotel Atitlan was booked for two nights by our tour operator, Caravan Tours. (Awesome outfit!)
The place was luxurious, with rooms looking to gorgeous gardens, and Lake Atitlan. The in house Restaurant was not fabulous, but certainly quite adequate. Well located to travel to any of the spots around the lake, some by boat and others by car or Tuk-Tuk, a three wheeled motorcycle taxi. The two native sisters who run the gift shop are very talented: Carmen embroiders and her sister does knitting. The garden has lots of birds, including resident Macaws, a peacock and a peahen, exotic pidgeons and wild turkeys. There is a nature trail and the staff is very accomodating.

The Hotel Atitlan, overlooking Late Atitlan, is among Guatemala's elite core of fine hotels. It is situated in the heart of Lake Atitlan's most ethnically authentic people. It is intimate and user-friendly, elegant in a classically understated way. The decor is in the Spanish colonial-hacienda style that was favored by the Guatemlan plantation owners of the 18th century. The Atitlan offers a wide range of services and is among the most dramatic and appealing natural surroundings in the world. Nestled within the rain forest on the hotel property are special locations for serious bird watching. A short walk from the hotel is the Atitlan Nature Reserve, which has a butterfly reserve, herb gardens, suspension bridges, spider monkeys, etc.

The beautiful botanical gardens and pools of this property are what make it special. We took a morning boat cruise across Lake Atitlán, one of the world’s most beautiful lakes to visit Santiago Atitlán, an Indian villages where Mayans still wear traditional dress.. Lake Atitlan is dominated by three dormant volcanoes. This is one of the locations on our Caravan tour that we wished we could have stayed longer.

This is a truly unique place. Filled with Mayan artifacts and textiles, gorgeous botanical gardens, exotic birds, a fireplace in the room, and views of 3 volcanoes ringing the lake. The food was excellent and so was the service, all done by friendly Mayan people. They brought wood for our fireplace and helped us get it started. If you are going to Guatemala, don't miss this.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the newer tower. Stay in the original hotel.

The grounds and gardens of this hotel were stunning! I was in complete awe of the beauty of the property. Loved soaking in the infinity hot-tub and looking at the lake and volcanoes around me.
The rooms are good but the grounds and view are what make the hotel incredible. I was very pleased with my stay.

One note: If traveling from Antigua, I would recommend taking motion sickness medication (just in case). I am not someone who normally suffers from motion sickness; however, I would have loved some medication for that drive (think mountains and many curves).

The room, view of the lake, food, gardens, pool and hottub all make this one of the most pleasant stays I've had in quite some time, and all at a reasonable price! If you're looking for a romantic getaway for two to relax by the pool, just be sure to avoid going during the holidays...it's nice that the hotel is so family-friendly, but the place can get quite overrun.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a balcony out to the lake, I'd recommend a room on the second floor for a bet...
