“Great budget hotel in Centro!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2014

Great budget hotel in centro area, Zona 1. I would recommend it since its convenient, close to transmetro bus and bus #83 going back to airport. We stayed there 3 nights 4 days, every morning 6-9 am had Guatemalan style breakfast (2 eggs, cheese, beans, tortillas), great value. Downside: noisy if you have a window, nobody cleans room daily...We had tiny shower/toilet but you can get cheaper room with showers on the floor if you like. Overall very good experience.

This is an old hotel in the historic part of the city. I wouldn't recommend walking around at night, but during the day we were fine, and saw police on each block. A few blocks away there is a street that was closed to traffic with shops, a mall, and historic buildings.
The hotel itself is older and rustically decorated. Kind of cute, but not super nice. The room we got had some invisible bug bitting us, and when we told the front desk they happily changed us to another (smaller) room that was clean and bug free.
It's not super close to the airport (15 min I think) but it is on the approach so we started hearing flights come in around 3am.

I stayed at the hotel in December 2013 and left my camera there by mistake. I only realised this when I'd reached another country and so contacted the hotel to see if they could find it. They did and I offered to pay the postage to send it to me. Instead the hotel arranged and paid for the postage of the camera. I am very grateful to receive the camera but in particular the pictures it contains from my trip to Belize and guatamala. That was worth a lot to me and was beyond what I expected from the hotel, much appreciated.

It’s a nice cozy and very family type of hotel. It is well located in the old historical part of town. The Central Food Market (Fruits, vegetables and meat) and Artisan Market are located at about 15 to 20 blocks away from the hotel; which is a walkable distance. Plus, there are main bus terminals within two or three blocks away from the hotel that serve several parts of the country with bus line; which is quite handy. Most bus’s departure is very early in the morning as the travel routes tend to be lengthy because of all the mountains ranges all over the country. And traffic is really heavy in Guatemala City; so you want to be near by the bus terminal the morning of your departure.

The room are small but very clean. The mattresses are comfortable, and the personal of the hotel very friendly and very helpful. Especially Luis the owner, if there is information you can’t find about Guatemala. Just ask Luis, I’ll find you the answer no matter what it was that you were looking for. He is a wonderful tourist guide for his own country. The Internet connection is good and at a reasonable price. Plus, there is breakfast and dinner service in the hotel; which is nice and handy as it is safer not to be wandering in the street past dawn.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms with Windows facing the Streets as they tend to be noizy.

Prices 04/13:
One Person (shared bathroom) - Q 90
Two Persons (shared bathroom) - Q 120

I already stayed in Hotel Ajau a couple of times and in this price category it is one of the best choices in Guatemala City - which IS more expensive than other citys in Guatemala and thus has to be put into a different category.

The hotel itself is located in the Zona 1 close to "La Sexa" - 6th avenue (6 Avenida), the centres main shopping street. Zona 1 is a safe zone during the day, if you follow your common knowledge you won't run into any problems there, but avoid walking around outside of "la sexa" after dawn! It's better to take a Taxi back to the hotel then.

The rooms are small but clean, same goes for the bathrooms, which is not something you can say about all hotels in Guatemala. The mattresses are comfortable.
Avoid the rooms that have their windows directly over the communal space, those are a bit louder and you can smell anything they cook right from your bed :)

The Internet connection is free, reliable and fast!

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms with windows directly over the communal area - those are louder and you'll smell...

We stayed here for one night and had the worst night sleep ever. There was no soundproofing between our room and the rooms next to us (or even the toilet down the corridor!) and as a result we spent the entire night trying to drown out the noise from someone talking on the phone next door. When someone flushed the toilet we could hear it even though it was 3 rooms away! Housekeeping started their rounds noisily at 6am so we probably only got a couple of hours sleep all night. The bus to Coban does not leave nearby as we thought from our guidebook, instead we had to get a taxi to the terminal Norte for Q70. For Q120/night worth staying elsewhere, especially if you plan to go on to Coban.

My friend and I arrived at the Hotel Ajau after a few days in Antigua and Panajachel...we were just making a two-day stop in Guatemala City on our way to El Salvador. Compared to what we experienced in the other cities in Guatemala (in hotels of the same price), this hotel was a seriously bad surprise. The room was small and cramped, dark, of cheap materials, and very exposed to all the noise of the lobby and entrance. It's an old building, and all the fitting are very old. We opened the little safe on the wall of our room, and it was filled with dead cockroaches. We decided we could not spend the night here and paid for our room and left for another hotel in the neighborhood. Please understand that the neighborhood of this hotel is not safe at night. I have lived in Bogota, Colombia and Guadalajara, Mexico, so am not new to developing world cities, but this is simply an unsafe and totally unattractive area. You have to walk a long distance to find anything really of any interest and it's difficult to find decent food. Guatemala City is not a tourist destination, and does not offer much, but pay a bit more and stay in a nicer part of town, where at least you will be safe and able to find decent restaurants. We finally ended up spending a lot more to stay in the Barcelo...because of its cleanliness and location.

Room Tip: if you are a backpacker who doesn't care about noise and atmosphere and are willing to stay in a...
