My pregmant wife and I promptly hailed a cab after arriving here and being shown our room. Actually, we were given a key to someone else's room first; Had we been less scrupulous, we could have taken their belongings thanks to the desk clerk's ineptitude.
The neighborhood was scary, even at mid-day. The desk clerk candidly warned us to be locked in before dark. The districts near the airport are much better.
The hotel itself seemed very secure. You have to be buzzed into the lobby after looking into a camera on the doorstep. It's probably safe once you're inside, but what's the point of traveling if you can't leave the hotel?
This place should be called "Chalet Sucio", because it was filthy. I've been to several poor countries across the world, sometimes on a shoestring budget, and I've never seen a dirtier hotel room. I was astonished that the guidebook, and some TripAdvisor members, recommended it.
If cleanliness and security are a priority for you, pay the extra $10 and stay in a nicer place near the airport.
