“Wouldn't stay in "Chalet Sucio"”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2012

Terrible Neighborhood.

My pregmant wife and I promptly hailed a cab after arriving here and being shown our room. Actually, we were given a key to someone else's room first; Had we been less scrupulous, we could have taken their belongings thanks to the desk clerk's ineptitude.

The neighborhood was scary, even at mid-day. The desk clerk candidly warned us to be locked in before dark. The districts near the airport are much better.

The hotel itself seemed very secure. You have to be buzzed into the lobby after looking into a camera on the doorstep. It's probably safe once you're inside, but what's the point of traveling if you can't leave the hotel?

Not Clean.

This place should be called "Chalet Sucio", because it was filthy. I've been to several poor countries across the world, sometimes on a shoestring budget, and I've never seen a dirtier hotel room. I was astonished that the guidebook, and some TripAdvisor members, recommended it.

If cleanliness and security are a priority for you, pay the extra $10 and stay in a nicer place near the airport.

Safe, clean and comfortable. Stayed just for one night before heading to Atitlan. Wouldn't want to spend more than a night in Guatemala City to begin with. If you have to be there overnight Chalet Suizo is a great choice.

We stayed here with friends and really enjoyed it! Not many extras, but it was nice and clean with comfortable beds at a low price. Staff was nice. We felt safe and secure. Enjoyed the restaurant. I highly recommend.

I stayed here for 3 nights with my boyfriend. We ended up picking this hotel because they had space and the moon guidebook said it was a good pick for the price. The price was awesome, we payed $27/night and got a 50% discount on the second night. The first person at the front desk was pretty friendly and generally nice. The room wasn't so great. The ceiling was really high and so all the noise echoed. The walls were really dirty and the room had no windows. The bathroom was generally clean but had a really strong bathroom cleaning odor that just never went away. The bed wasn't too comfy and we would be woken up in the morning by the staff moving the courtyard furniture around to clean. The room was never cleaned while we were there and we finally got new towels on the 3rd day when we asked for more toilet paper. The internet is free. On the second night, there was a new front desk guy and he was really unhelpful. We were trying to book a day trip to Chichi and the guy wouldn't let us use the phone after 1 phone call, making an excuse about waiting for a call; he told us they had a private driver and that he would ask for a pricing, which he never did. It wasn't until the owner, an older lady, appeared that we were allowed to use the phone. I would pay a little more next time for something better.
