“Worth a stop if you're at Xchel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Extraordinary collection of archeological relics, including some found underwater at a few of Guatemala's lakes. Neat walk through history. The funerary urns were among the more impressive pieces. There's a small fee if you want to take pictures. Maybe you need 1-2 hours to take it all in. Super friendly staff.

“Great collection of Mayan pottery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

A small well curated exhibit of predominantly Mayan pottery. Many pieces very well preserved. Definitely worth a visit.

“One of the best museums!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

This has to be one of the best museums in terms of over-all display and information in both spanish and english. The staff are very helpful and informative in answering question. A definite must visit while in Guatemala City. I would visit this museum again.

“One of very few reasons to spend time in Guatemala City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

Museo Popol Vuh and the adjacent Ixchel are nicely curated collections of old Mayan pots and much newer Mayan textiles in modern buildings on the Universidad Francisco Marroquin campus in Zona 10. The Popol Vuh collection consists almost entirely of crockery found in Lake Atitlan, at a flooded settlement, and in another lake, into which it was thrown for sacrificial purposes. Explanations and labels are in Spanish and well-translated English. A current ground-floor exhibit shows an Indian pictographic narrative of Alvarado's conquest of Guatemala from the perspective of native Mexican warriors who accompanied the conquistador. Half a dozen videos explain what's going on in the narrative. Staff here are very knowledgeable and helpful, and they speak English if you need them to.
