I wish I could echo some of my fellow travellers accolades, but my wife and I had numerous concerns with this property.
When the reservation was initially made, we requested a non-smoking king bed. When we arrived late on our arrival date, we were given a double smoking room. We were told if it was a problem that we could re-request our original room the following day. The following morning, we were told that they were filled to capacity and that they could not move us for the remainder of our trip. I take some of the blame here because my Spanish is all but non-existent and it is possible if we did not have a language barrier to navigate I may have been more successful in my attempts to change the room. I would also like to add that, even though it was a smoking room, they went to extensive steps to make sure that it didn't SMELL like a smoking room; most smoking rooms are bothersome enough that I cannot sleep. Although my sleep was far from perfect at the Crowne Plaza, it was not because of the smell of smoke (see next paragraph).
Our air conditioner was certainly not the loudest I've ever heard, but the banging in the system was bothersome, especially at night. Again, we were unable to change rooms because they were booked to capacity.
I must admit that I have not travelled abroad extensively and that should be taken into account, especially with the following concerns -- I simply am not experienced enough to know whether this is a valid source of concern. I found the soundproofing in the room to be inadequate; the airport is three short blocks away from the airport (the gym on the 11th floor has a great view of the airport) and traffic was easily identifiable on the 5th floor early in the morning. If you are an early morning person (around 6am) this may not be a concern for you, but we were awoken between 6 and 7am every day we were there due to airplane and traffic outside the hotel. Definately not something that worked toward a better star rating.
I would like to note that the breakfast included in the price of the room is quite good; it is a buffet, but unlike any buffet I've ever seen in the U.S. There were plenty of unique and local items that I enjoyed trying. They also offer buffets for lunch and dinner as well as a menu that you may request as well. Everything we tried dining-wise was good (not fantastic, but certain better than adequate).
For those that enjoy gambling, the casino is somewhat limited at the Crowne Plaza. They have plenty of one-armed bandits, but keep in mind that payoffs are not regulated as they are in the U.S. I cannot comment on the payouts as I never played them during my visit. They have Blackjack, Caribbean Poker, and Roulette (they have two old Roulette tables that appear to be retired in favor of the new electronic displays that are beginning to pop up in Las Vegas). The displays do not appear to be as new as the ones in the LV but play is virtually identical. I did not notice any of the casino staff as being proficient in English, so this would definately NOT be a good place to learn to gamble at the tables if you are not proficient at Spanish.
Overall, this was not my favorite hotel but it was far from the worst. Employees in general were polite and attentive, even those who spoke as much English as I spoke Spanish! If location in Guatemala City is not an issue, I think I would recommend the Quinta Real Guatemala Hotel, which was where my wife and I attended a wedding reception. The rooms were not much larger, but much better appointed for about the same, if not less, than the Crowne Plaza. Also the bathrooms are layed out MUCH better.
