The Grand Tikal is connected to a small shopping mall which sounds nice, but when you arrive, you realize that you're in a part of town that is pretty dingy and rough, and I've been to every corner of Latin America, and I did'nt want to walk outside this hotel. My wife and I were told by the lady handling the adoption of our son, that we needed to move to a b and b near the embassies, and downtown etc. --which was one of many gorgeous areas of Guatemala City--lots to do -very safe--world class restaurants--we were so disappointed we had missed 2 days of being there because the Grand Tikal experience was so depressing and dour. To add insult to injury, i approach the front desk and explain that we have been told we need to leave the hotel, expecting the person to charge us for one additional night, as is customary around the world, and it's only fair since our reservation was for 7 nites, so she says-no you'll be paying for the whole 7 days--regardless. I begged her to just handle it the way hotels around the world handle something like that ---even if she wanted to charge 2 nites--but no--in came the credit card bill charging us for 7 nites in a trashy hotel in a bad part of town when we stayed there for 2 nites. Thanks a lot Grand Tikal--we loved EVERYTHING else about Guatemala however, the people, food, culture, climate, and we'll be going back many times to visit sites, beaches, rain forest, and Guatemala City. Stay at the San Carlos B and B; or one of the many others in the area near the US Embassy.

  • Liked — if you like to gamble -there's a casino across the parking lot
  • Disliked — being overcharged, being in a part of town with nothing to do apart from a shopping mall

When i first arrived at the airport they had a shuttle waiting to pick us up.. Without even ordering it, i was impressed!

Then i had booked online and the room they gave me was Fabulous! I was treated like a princess.. This room was bigger than my apt in canada!

The pool at the hotel is great and you can go up to the roof to suntan if you want.

Aswell the restaurants are very good and the mall that is attached to the hotel makes it very convinient if you need anything or forgot to bring something from home.

A+

We stayed here for two nights on a Caravan tour. It is a very nice big city hotel. Large room with great bath facilities. Very clean. comfortable beds. Soaring atrium lobby. Pool and fitness center which
we didn't get to use. The restaurant food was good but the service was disorganized. This was my only complaint. The hotel is attached to a mall which was not very interesting. There is a better mall across the street.

We stayed at the Grand Tikal Futura for three nights (one pre-tour) and two while on a tour. The hotel had excellent food, very nice atrium, a fitness center and pool. Breakfasts were buffet style with many choices and eggs were cooked to order. It is located next to an upscale shopping center, and a casino. Also within a 5 minute walk was a small park and an archeological museum dedicated to a very early Mayan city - Parque Arqueologico Kaminaljuyu. Internet, for a reasonable fee, was available in our room. We liked this hotel.

I was really excited to read the great reviews about this hotel, but I found it average (and I am a relatively low-maintenance traveller). We were picking up our daughter (horrray!), and while I can see this would be a great hotel if you are on a visit and not allowed to leave the hotel, it was average for us and other families on the pick up trips. First, the positives: it's a beautiful environment, and our room was very clean (but on the small side). The housekeeping staff and some of the front desk staff were very nice. It has a mall attached, which is very fun to go to (check out the food court on the third floor).

However, the front desk staff were not that friendly, and two messages my husband left for me from the United States while we were there did not end up ever getting through to the voice mail. We had three people in the room (one was my 18 month old daugher) and they would not give us more than one washcloth (total) per day or an iron (they have a pressing service that they charge you for) despite multiple requests. When my young son and I first brought our luggage in, about five bellmen were standing around talking and watching us trying to lug everything up to the room, but no one offered to help us take it up to the room (I was prepared with a generous tip for any kind soul who whould help carry four suitcases and carry on bags, but none appeared).

The restaurant was pretty good, but we waited an hour for our dinner; our 18 month old was getting restless and we were getting dirty looks from fellow diners so I had to keep taking her out of the restaurant.

Overall, if you get a good deal like we did (stay two nights, get one free) it might be decent, but I would not pay top price at this hotel. It would be a good hotel for honeymooners and singles, but not necessarily for adoptive parents on a pick up trip.

The only place to stay with children, especially for longer trips. We've stayed there twice so far on adoption visits, with an infant and a six year old. The pool is fantastic, including 3 hot tubs, and a seperate, yet attached kiddie pool. There are 2 above average restaurants located in the hotel. The attached mall povides both entertainment (including many shops, a small childrens section with shops and rides, a movie theater, bowling alley, and very large lower level area of more extensive kid rides and games with prizes), and fast food options. The staff were friendly and helpful and because this place is not near the downtown section with many of the other hotels frequented by adopters, it is very safe. There were, however, an average of 4 or 5 other adoptive families around. The mall security is the same staff as hotel security, so you can freely walk around. Call the hotel directly and ask for the special adoption rate, and all that it includes (full buffet breakfast, lounge assess with free water, etc) The executive suite worked best for us, as we were able to put the kids to sleep and have seperate space to hang out. You would never get all this in the states, for the price.
