“Fantastic spanish food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2012

It's a family owned restaurant and quality is never compromised. Nice crisp clean linens every time and it's authentic spanish food is always delicious!
The venue in zone 10 could use a face-lift, though. The waiters tend to "fight" over the customers as they walk in...

“Classy and classic--reason enough to venture into Zona 1”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2011

The guidebooks will tell you to avoid Zona 1, the historic part of downtown Guatemala City, because it is dirty, dangerous, and crumbling. Altuna is reason enough to ignore such warnings.

Altuna is a classic, from the dark woods, high ceilinged dining room, and very capable old school waiters--who wear jackets and wheel your entree to your table on a cart.

The food is outrageously good, and nearly as inexpensive as it is excellent. All the more remarkable, as this is a fine restaurant--classy and classic.

The paella should be proclaimed a city landmark--the portion size looks as if it was plated with a shovel. Mussels, shrimp, fish, and an assortment of other things that make paella so wonderful. . .and eventually you will come to a whole chicken leg. All this for 64Q--about $8 US. Wow.

The croquetas to start are wonderful.

And all of this wouldn't be complete without outstanding flan--creamy, eggy, and oh so good.

Here's the kicker. . .that mountain of paella, the flan, soup to start, and two local beers--with tip and tax. . .less than $20. In an elegant, old-world real dining room.

If you are in Guatemala City, dining at Altuna is a must. I came four years ago, was looking forward to returning this trip, and would go back in a heartbeat next time I'm staying in Guatemala City.

Tip: Zona 1, despite all the warnings, is showing signs of a comeback. I stayed at the Pan American, and asked if I could walk to the restaurant four blocks away. The answer is yes, but despite the restaurant's fronting on Avenida 5 (Quinta), best to walk on the newly gleaming Paseo de la Sexta (6th Avenue), and cut over one block just before you get to Altuna. Was pleasantly surprised at how clean and well lit Paseo de la Sexta was, and clearly locals are supportive. . .a lot of strolling families and couples out enjoying the renaissance of sorts. Just in the one block cut over, you will see an abrupt difference, though. . .the sidewalks get darker and considerably more desolate. If you are not staying at the Pan American, you would likely want to take a cab. As well, there is a branch of Altuna in Zona 10--haven't tried it, but the menu looks about the same--and that might be more convenient for some travelers.
